I only bought a Switch due to lock down, it came with ACNH which I would not have bought separately.

However glad I did loving both AC and the Switch.

This is my first AC and I was going to try it anyway. It makes me regret that I missed the previous ones.

Also wooooo hoooo!

Whoohoo to you!

Hurrah, congrats!

Congrats! Too bad Isabelle is seducing Tom Nook for the nuclear codes as we speak.

My advice is to turn on the sound. I can’t imagine trying to fish without it.

Every once in a while I load up my Wild World save on my DS. I see that it’s completely overrun with weeds and then close it again in despair, lol. (Weeds continue to spawn every day, even if you’re not playing.)

In New Leaf, as mayor, you could issue town edicts, but only one at a time. One of them was that the shop stayed open 24/7, useful for people who mainly played at night but didn’t want to time travel. The one I always had on was the one that stopped weeds from spawning, hehe. Though you could pay Leif to do the weeding for you if you were rolling in bells. (Leif eventually becomes a permanent fixture at Nook’s in New Leaf.)

Anyway, the older games are still worth playing, if you have a DS or 3DS… but there are some nice QoL improvements in ACNH. That said, I think New Leaf is still easily playable, and they made some changes for NH that I liked better in NL to be honest.

I have trouble seeing the 3DS screen lately with my terrible vision. I play the Switch docked, even. I’ll think about it maybe :)

GameCube one was rad.

It’ll be tough to go back to the older games methinks. I never played any of the (3)DS ones but New Horizons is a pretty big leap over City Folk. For one, flowers used to wither if you don’t water them regularly, imagine that with your town! :)

None of the poll options apply to me. I had played a bit of previous games, didn’t particularly care for them, and wasn’t planning to play this one. I had intended to eventually buy a copy for my kids to share, as they’ve enjoyed the 3DS version. But it was one of a number of games that they seemed to like, not particularly standing out, so I had thought it could wait for the holidays. Instead, the sequence has gone:

  • 5-year-old remembers the release date (because it happened to fall on my birthday) despite it being a month since she saw the poster for it, during which none of us has mentioned it. She is much more excited than expected, so I give in and order a copy for the kids to share.
  • After a couple of hours, it becomes clear that sharing an island isn’t going to work because they want to make their own decisions and then visit each other, so we give in and get another copy.
  • After a couple of days of watching them play, my wife wants to play too, so we order her a copy and her own Switch.
  • While it’s being shipped, I don’t want to be left out, so I download a digital copy and start playing too.

They got you good!

Yeah, there’s a clear audio splash queue that lets you know when you can reel in the fish. I watched and I think the splash is maybe bigger at that time, but I can’t imagine trying to fish visually.

Fishing is essentially an audio-based challenge.

It’s really more of a ka-PLUNK than a splash, helping to differentiate it from the mild splish of the nibbles!

Yeah, but I can’t even complain, given how good of a value it’s been per hour of entertainment.

Yeah, in general I agree with this. I do still think New Leaf would still be fun, but anything before that is probably gonna be pretty rough, yeah.

Despite my leaving that option off the poll, I do have one other friend who had a similar opinion. That is, he’s played a bunch of the previous AC games, but for whatever reason New Leaf bounced off him, and he hasn’t bought New Horizons because of that. (Remains to be seen whether he changes his mind.)

I close my eyes when fishing and only go on sound, now. I started getting really twitchy for some reason but I find not seeing the fish movements prevents me from doing anything until I hear the bloop sound.
