A friend gave me Death Note and it’s pretty good but the story has taken a turn that kinda changed everything a bit too much. I’ll stick with it though.
Anyway, looking for what may be next and found this list of top anime ratings. Death Note is #20. #1 is Rurouni Kenshin - Reminiscence, which is only 4 episodes. Has anybody seen it, is it worth tracking down?

I can definitely rank that Rurouni Kenshin OVA in my top 10 list of all the anime I’ve ever watched, and that’s a whole lot of anime in the last 10-15 years.
Along with Berserk, Evangelion, Bebop and others, I’d say it’s a required watch. You could safely skip the TV show, though one arc(Kyoto) of that is excellent if you can bear through the preceding episodes.
What he said. That OVA was awesome. Also, that list is inherently wrong, because GunGrave is ranked at #21 and Haibane Renmei is at #25. Heresy!
I don’t understand. And what’s OVA?
OVA/OAV, same thing. Original Video Animation/Original Animation Video – in other words, it was never aired, and went straight to VHS/DVD/BluRay.
Working my way through Steins;Gate slowly. Watched episode 7 last night and I think the story may actually be going somewhere finally. Heard the payoff at the end is worth it all, but so far it’s been really repetitive.
Been wanting to re-watch original series of Hajime no Ippo, but I don’t have the DVD’s with me and it seems to have fallen off the interwebs. Maybe I’ll just go through the beast of a manga a second time. Almost up to a 1000 chapters now!
Yes, it is. It is almost completely unrelated to the TV series. Where the tv series has lots of comedy elements and is a more typical Japanese fighting anime with Ki attacks, super human moves, ridiculous non lethal attacks, characters naming special moves before performing them and traditional ninja running, the movie “prequel” is more dark, realistic and serious.
As with any time a list is posted, i’ll have to comment that that is a terrible list.
Everything on that list is 8+ years old…except for Eureka Seven (2005) and Haruhi (2006). It doesn’t even have Claymore!?!..no wait, it’s #128.
Some interesting stuff there, though mostly reflecting the favourites of a certain generation of anime fans. Scrapped Princess was surprisingly good, for one. Hikaru no Go is one of my favourite animes, and I’ve always intended to see Full Moon wo Sagashite. Utena at 139.
Senki Zesshou Symphogear: I’ve never really “got” the “jpop will save the world” genre anime i must admit. At the start i thought it was a mediocre magical girl anime married to “jpop will save the world.” At the end i thought maybe it was a decent magical girl anime married to “jpop will save the world.”
Seriously, if you watched macross and thought “hey, they don’t sing enough jpop” or “why can’t they sing jpop WHILE fighting,” this anime might be for you. I really have trouble taking serious scenes seriously when they are singing WHILE running around/swinging swords around.
Let’s see:
1 Rurouni Kenshin - Reminiscence (1999) YES
2 Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) YES
3 Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien (2003) No idea
4 Full Moon wo Sagashite (2002) No idea
5 Cowboy Bebop (1998) YES
6 Elfen Lied (2004) No
7 Hikaru no Go (2001) yes
8 Berserk (1997) read the manga
9 One Piece (1999) no idea
10 Gundam SEED (2002) no idea
11 12 Kokuki (2002) no idea
12 Hunter X Hunter (1999) read the manga
13 Last EXILE (2003) almost yes… but the last 1/4 jumps the shark
14 Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu! (2003) yes
15 Hajime no Ippo (2000) yes
16 Scrapped Princess (2003) no
17 Great Teacher Onizuka (1999) yes
18 Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) YES
19 Rahxephon (2002) no idea
20 DEATH NOTE (2006) yes
21 GunGrave (2003) yes
22 Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu (2006) yes
23 Grave of the Fireflies (1988) YES
24 Monster (2004) yes/read the manga
25 Haibane Renmei (2002) YES
26 Planet ES (2003) YES
27 Furi Kuri (2000) YES
YES = very good, yes = good, no idea = I haven’t watched it.

Lists like that always make me think that someone just ranked all the anime they’ve happened to see.
It’s pretty easy to see the failing of these kind of lists.
For example, Perfect Blue have 21% of the voters ranking it at 9/10. Naruto have 34% of the voters ranking it at 9/10.
It makes me think that different kinds of public have different voting behavior.

Reminiscence = Tsuiokuhen?
But I should know that, as Tsuiokuhen was godly.
How the hell is Toradora! or Lovely Complex not on there? Both amazing rom/com and where’s my economics?
Episode 12 of Mirai Nikki is noteworthy for making me jump with that bird at the end. The doctor would be perfect for the anime.

The voting thing just boils down to anime’s main audience being teenagers, who will mainly care about a property’s surface appeal.

I’d rather use these two:

At least with lists like this it’s clearer you’re getting pure popularity poll results.

Popularity is another list, the two I posted are about what people “voted” them. Not just “how many” watched them.
Lynxara

No, this is basically a popularity poll list. Shows with broader appeal and more viewers are clearly ranking higher. How else do you end up with a list that decides Gintama is the best anime ever made? It’s just people giving 10s to anything that held their attention for long enough.

These are the lists sorted by popularity. They are a bit different:
