Anyone else watching Space Dandy? Its somewhere between cowboy bebop and excel saga…
Assuming you guys are not native Japanese speakers, do you tend to have a favourite subbing group?
Just watched all of Attack on Titan. Pretty damn good, I thought. Dragged a bit here an there during moments that were heavy in the character introspection, but that could have been due to less than ideal subbing.
The English dub of Space Dandy was also panned by one of the animators of the show. Do you tend to watch dubs, or only go with subs?

I can say my least favorite of all time was Arctic, if anyone remembers the old fansubbing days.
Subs. No favorite groups, but I avoid Commie if possible. I’ve downloaded Space Dandy ep 1 but haven’t watched it yet.
I’m watching Buddy Complex, which is a robot anime that is trying to cross Gundam with…Shinkon Gattai Godannar’s docking robots. It’s…I’m not sure if the show is going yaoi…the boy’s faces aren’t angular, though.
Sadly Space Dandy isn’t really working for me, I had high hopes for that show. I’ll probably keep with it for a bit longer at least.

I set it aside to possibly pick it back up after it’s done, but it wasn’t able to hold my interest at this point.
For sub groups, FFF, UTW, Underwater and Vivid are all rather good.
Good, i thought i was alone.
I generally like Buddy Complex, but… there are some major yaoi vibes here. The terms everyone uses make me think that they are talking about setting up a coupling/match between the male leads and not the mechs. It is basically the exact terminology from BL fans. A lot of the dialog seems to support this as well. There are simply way too many of these situations for it to be a coincidence.
The second the female flight crew starts talking about which guy is on top during the transformation, i am out of here.
Buddy Complex update: I just watched eps 3. “Coupling”, “Proposal”, “Accept”. I can’t believe they didn’t use “Divorce”…oops spoilers. I can’t wait to hear boys in the playground yelling Proposal Proposal to each other LOL.
Thankfully the coupled robots don’t merge…they both power up insanely, that’s all. Also thankfully the coupling status screens shows the two persons side by side. (I can keep going, it’s funny!) But typical yaoi progression detected…the two boys are hating on each other severely right now. Expecting accidental walking-into-shower-naked-bumping-into-each-other in 4 episode, and confession in 10.
This anime is made by Sunrise. That explains the SRS Bizness feel of the show, with the 2 sides, and the introduction of the pilots on each side.
Is it just me or does the second in command on the flagship in Buddy Complex look EXACTLY the same as her counterpart in Gundam seed?
I really just feel like i’m watching Gundam Seed with a Boys Love side plot.
wow the 3rd episode doesn’t even try to be subtle. The two male leads are “coupled” in order to power up their mechs and saving the day. Then enter the female love interest and… forced decoupling… losing the battle now!
That’s why I mentioned Sunrise. It’s like they are ripping off themselves…they did all the Gundams, after all.
I’ve started Hunter X Hunter thanks to you guys (eps 21 today). The people in this show (hunters, candidates, even that gate guard at the foot of Kukuroo mountain) sure have a cavalier attitude about people dying…
It’s a harsh world!
I love Togashi’s writing. Every time I find an anime that seems more or less good but it fails in the plot because it has parts that doesn’t make sense, or there is an asspull, I think “I wish Togashi would have written this”. He is the type of writer to care about details, to always have an eye about what’s possible in the world or not and not cheat the rules he was written himself.

I just saw the second episode of GITS: Arise. I thought it was pretty good, actually, better than the first. Very nice graphic design sensibility. The story was as involved and implausible as ever, rather more like the manga than usual, I thought, but it was secondary behind the graphics and action settings. Poor squad members…
So, new season.
Good stuff:
-Mushishi 2nd season (doh)
-Ping Pong. Yuasa directs a series from one of Taiyo Matsumoto’s mangas. What a good combo. Eclectic and bold visual style, gripping direction, well crafted. The story seems simple, but when it’s so well executed it doesn’t really matter.
-Jojo 2nd season. I actually needed some time for the series to “click” for me in the first season, to get the goofy, melodramatic, bizarre, B-series charm of JoJo, but now it’s pretty cool!
Less good but seems decent
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii : light romance/comedy in a fantasy world, slightly shojo?
One week Friends : Romantic slice-of-life drama, with a girl with memory problem. Very fluffy style
Last season update.
Kill la kill is the best anime of 2013-2014. Somehow the frantic pace kept up, after losing some steam late last year. Unbelievably, Ryuko’s ridiculously under-dressed transformed costume has an explanation in the show!
I dropped Buddy Complex in the middle, around 8 or 9. I lasted longer than I thought, to be honest. There was too much lame family/political conflict setup for me to stand. I did watch episode 12 or 13 to catch the “finale”, but the show isn’t ending yet.
Strike the Blood and Tokyo Ravens: it’s scary how these 2 anime blend together in my mind. Both borders on being generic, yet has enough of something to keep me watching. Strike the Blood should have been more interesting, with the idea of a place where all kinds of mythological systems co-exists and interacts with each other, but every story ends with several deus-ex machina. Tokyo Ravens was more coherent, but still ended with some deus-ex.
Noragami is a series I only discovered last week, after reading some post-season reviews. This anime is amazing! And it’s not a harem, I promise! I want to compare this to Durarara…
This season, I’ll be watching Captain Earth (giant robot), another Bakemonogatari sequel, selector infected WIXOSS (yu-gi-oh but all girls?), and some others I don’t recall right now. I need to watch the old Musashi first before catching the new ones.

Noragami was quite good overall. A bit weak from time to time in the middle until a certain major character gets his act together and stops acting like a piece of trash, but the early and late parts were very satisfying and the middle still wasn’t bad.
StB was stupid fun. Not much more to say about it than that.
TR noticeably suffered from some pacing and budget issues that got in the way of the story it was trying to tell. Considering they adapted ten novels in one season (since it’s the only logical point to break the story), they did a reasonably good job at such a breakneck pace but couldn’t avoid letting the story itself suffer as it wasn’t as fleshed out as it could’ve been. As a result, a lot of the material at the end seems to come out of nowhere.
Noragami: LOL I just got to the part where the piece of trash apologized. Stupid whiny cousin of Cloud…
Tokyo Ravens: 10 novels?!? I guess they mostly did a good job cutting stuff down to the esentials, 'cos I mostly followed everything, but it was odd to see Bakatora start using magic when they keep saying early on how he couldn’t and was baka anyways. I’ll have to go read it. (I read all the translated DxD. It’s like Dragonball levelling up progression…)
Wizard Barrister Benmashi Cecil was the only other series I forgot about before. It’s…um…ok…mostly harmless. Overly colorful. Pretty good story with only a little stupidness. I have a problem with a major plot hole, but otherwise it’s ok.

I did not like Kill la kill probably because it just seemed like a lot of yelling going on ;)
I will have to take a look at Noragami.
I will miss Silver Spoons since it appears to have ended after second season. It now sits as one of my family’s favorite animes.
We also liked Log Horizon and glad it will have a second season/story arc starting in Oct 2013.
I noticed that Fairy Tale now has a Fairy Tale 2? Is that kinda of like a gimmick to get people to watch it (they can start at the second series instead of the beginning is what it made me think instead of just continuing right along like One Piece does)?
You could’ve muted the show…it’s captioned.
