I think that sort of thing actually appeals to the Japanese male audience, as much as it is grating to an American audience.

What the hell has happened to Kekkai Sensen? are they still going to finish it, is already released and I have not seen it?

Are you still looking for horror anime? I hated Elfen Lied but that’s always up on people’s lists. Then I’ve heard great things about Another. Fate/Zero is scarier than the synopsis lets on, but I don’t know if it’s really horror.

Dennou Coil is creepy if you’re a kid, and is amazing, but not horror.

Also there’s Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

You can find these fan made trailers like this on youtube for a flavor.

I’d never heard of School-Live so I did this, and I can confirm that it is absolutely the right way to go about it. Halfway through the (so far) 8 episodes and totally hooked.

Also, this is the first time I’ve used Crunchyroll on my Fire TV. It took a bit of work because they don’t have an actual Fire TV app, but it works just fine. Just need a bit of setup work…I grabbed the Android version APK off the Play Store and sideloaded it onto the Fire TV.

Right?? They got the hooks into me hard with this one.

School Live Club

During most of the first episode, I was giving my wife a bunch of shit about it. “You know this is the kind of thing that even anime fans make fun of, right?” But I was thinking why the hell would my wife tell me to watch this? There has to be more to it. And then - BAM! - they got me. All kinds of messed up.

Well I wasn’t sure I was going to make it through that 1st episode as it is everything I detest in anime, but I’m still watching.

Holy crap. Man I have to say well done to that. I knew something was up with the room labeled bedroom etc. but had no idea it was going to there.[/SPOILER

Now here’s a question I have.

Megu is a ghost right? I thought she was and that only yuki saw her and that the other girls were humoring yuki. Then they interact with Megu in another episode so I thought I was wrong. Then we have the flashback to when it all started. so i’m guessing she saved them and then died and we just haven’t seen that yet.

Nevermind they finally answered my question.

I actually watch some of those slice-of-life school animes that you guys are bagging on, although I must say School Life was (intentionally, I assume) kinda over-the-top bad about it.

Pretty much exactly my reaction! :)

I was confident about midway through ep 2 that Megu was a figment of Yuki’s imagination, but then ep 3 focusing on Megu’s memory threw me for a loop. Wasn’t until ep 6 that it was cleared up. I continue to be impressed with the ability of the writers to misdirect. A lot of times after the first big reveal, these shows become predictable, but this one’s not there yet for me.

I finished Revolutionary Girl Utena! … 2 weeks ago. Half way through, I needed to google for an explanation of a simple 1-line scene at the end of an episode, and that led me to all sorts of sites with episode-by-episode analysis, one of which is done by an actual English major. The consequence of all the reading is that I now try to be way more observant when I watch any shows.

Which leads me to this little spoiler for the 1st episode of School-Live, the reason I stopped questioning the sanity of all you people:

I saw the grave marker on the roof garden just before the 1st commercial.

Whoever recommended Another… Thank you.

I want more of that kind of show.

Damn you, Telefrog! I feel like I got hit over the head with a maul after that first episode. I am totally hooked now. Thank you for the suggestion.

Also, if any of you are having a hard time looking for it, School Live is also known as Gakkou Gurashi. And follow Telefrog’s advice…do not read anything about it. Hell, I’m not even sure how I would describe it to friends.

No problem. I got that recommendation a while back from a couple of friends of mine who are seriously into anime. I’ll ask them if they know of any others in the same vein and post here later.

Ok I got recommendations for Shiki if you want more of the same type of thing as Another (but bear with it a bit as it starts a bit weird) and a softer recommendation for Ga Rei Zero for more action/supernatural rather than horror/supernatural.

Danganronpa.

Extreme disclaimer: I’ve not watched Another, I’ve only read the summary on MyAnimeList. I’ve also not watched Dangaronpa, but I’m playing it now, and I guessing that a murder mystery solve-em-up is similar to a suspense thriller.

Speaking of which, here are what users on MyAnimeList recommends.

Just finished 12 episodes of School Days. Didn’t do it for me, It’s a slice of high school life drama. Following a love triangle and boy who can’t commit. I can’t say anything else, but if you watch it watch to the very end.

Last week I did finish season 1 of “Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?” Yes, there’s some fanservice…but I found it entertaining and sometimes cute. The title doesn’t really do it justice.

Useless fact of the day: School Days is famous for spawning the meme term “nice boat”. Don’t look up its definition/origin unless you want the last episode spoiled.

I never knew what that phrase/meme meant. I’d seen it before, but had no clue.

You know, Psycho-Pass was pretty intense. Maybe that can be another recommendation.

Now that I have the Crunchyroll app installed on my FireTV, I’m a lot more inclined to pull stuff off the backlog that’s built up in my queue there. Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been watching Sword Art Online II an episode or two at a time. Finished it off tonight, with the last four episodes in a row. Plenty of time for that since the Tigers were getting blown out by KC, gave me a couple of hours of my evening back. :)

In some ways, SAO II is very similar to the first season: the virtual world stuff feels like just a “skin” over the show, which could just as easily be dropped into some high fantasy or sci-fi setting without any major changes. But in other ways, the second season isn’t like the first one at all. You’ve got the murder-mystery arc, which I thought was passable from a story perspective, but Sinon’s struggles with what was basically PTSD was the real interesting bit. Can’t say that I thought it was handled particularly well (becoming a virtual sniper sounds like a pretty poor treatment plan), but just the fact that they used it was interesting to me. Same with the later arc around terminal illness, though I’m glad to say that I thought they did a better job handling it. And thanks be, Kirito and his sister went back to a normal relationship without incestuous overtones. Still not a huge fan of the series (which is why it sat on the queue so long), but I was moderately entertained with the implementation, and the fact that they brought in those larger issues made it more interesting.

Psycho-Pass. Was definitely interesting. I liked what they were trying, but it was a little too silly at points. That sounds odd considering how much violence there is in show, but the hologram suite etc. just felt silly.
