I watched the first season and didn’t mind it, but never made it very far into the second before bowing out.

I might be in the minority, but I liked stand alone complex more than the movies. It’s towards the top of my pile of anime, probably in the top10.

SAC is great, but I think it really helps to be forewarned about how philosophical and navel-gazing it gets at times. It isn’t just an action show.

Which is exactly why I like it.

Totally. But I could see it being off-putting to someone that wasn’t expecting that.

Nice. That’s my favorite part of anime. When they combine philosophy and navel-gazing with small bouts of action. IMO anime does this better than any other format.

I’ll have to watch SAC now.

Totally agree. The two SAC series are better than any of the movies.

Pop quiz. Which of these is in fact an incredibly sweet, adorable character?

That little cutie on the right!

Might be your perfect show, honestly.

@espressojim Tachikoma!

I was searching for where I could stream SAC, and Just Watch says:

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002) - 2 seasons on Hulu
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society (2007) on Hulu
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man (2005) on Hulu
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Individual Eleven (2006) on Hulu

So those other three are movies to be watched after the 2 seasons of the show?

Solid State Society is a stand-alone film that takes place after the series, I think. The other two are adaptations of the first (laughing man) and second (individual eleven) seasons

Definitely start by watching SAC season 1.

Sweet. Looking forward to it. Hopefully it’s a good dub that Hulu has, not just a sub.

I don’t need to have seen any Ghost of the Shell stuff before watching SAC season 1, right?

Nope, not necessary. And the dub is great.

Just in case there was any need for another to pile on, GITS:SAC is easily my favorite anime of all time. Both seasons and the movie, all great stuff. Feels warning - I cried unashamedly in both season 1 ep 25 and season 2 ep 26.

I looked through Amazon video stuff to see what kind of anime they had on there, and was delighted to find Kara no Kyoukai/the Garden of Sinners available in full for streaming with Prime. I’ll gladly rewatch all those movies!

I also think SAC is way better than the movie or the original manga. The best GitS hands down, psecially the first season (second season ran for too long).

My favorite anime is Planetes, though. Not best anime. Best sci-fi show ever.

Followed by, perhaps, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (Game of Thrones in space from before GoT existed) but it’s old, hasn’t aged well and is probably an acquired taste somewhat. However, it recently became available for streaming, will be released on DVD starting probably this year, and a new series (a remake, or new adaptation of the novels, that hopefully will preserve the good and update the old) will start airing in Japan this year.

This intrigues me. I might end up watching this before I watch SAC. I’ll have to double check, but I think a friend of mine had this on his Plex server, so I could watch it without resubbing on Hulu.

Planetes is really, really good. Very different feel than GitS: SAC though so it is more what you feel like at the moment.
