LotGH is very much a political show. The military battles are important to the extent they reflect and change the political landscape, but if you like the political stuff, you will enjoy the ride

This may be the only isekai I’ve ever dropped because it was so very, very boring. Just dreary and dull. I think I gave it maybe four episodes to see if any actual plot was going to show up, but it never did. Generic characters, generic monsters, generic world. Bleah.
First ep impressions
Cute but not too cute. Pikachu as first monster. Pacing is good and not drawn out. She jumps right into a game a couple of minutes in and you have to infer what’s going on.
ep 4: i am getting way too involved in this show. where do 711’s get their bentos? do they have a different source than the dawsons? what about mom and pop delis, do they make their own, get them from a granny down the block? are there sites that review which are the best bentos?
ep 11: why would you do this to me. there’s no resolution. the ship has not docked. that is such a koiwai-level move!!!
Yeah, it’s one of the main flaws of the series, how it follows supposedly military genius, but the strategies shown are pretty subpar. In you you got to imagine they really are geniuses but they aren’t showing it to you, and roll with it. The core of the series is really the political arc that is behind the battles.
I just watched up to episode 21. It seems like the natural end of Season 1. All loose ends tied up. And yet, there are still 4 episodes to go. I’m guessing they want to lay the groundwork for Season 2 before leaving us with a cliffhanger? Maybe I’m better off waiting for Season 2 here.
The game aspects of the anime were not very intrusive and even unnecessary. So I enjoyed the first season a lot. Re:Zero is still my favorite show about going to another world, but Shield Hero was pretty good too. Nice escapist entertainment.
Yeah, I may watch 21 tomorrow, but 20 could have easily ended a season. It has that feel to it, imo.
Thanks for this recommendation. I started this on Hulu yesterday and couldn’t stop watch. I watched some more this morning. Very sweet and happy is a good description. Plus they’re actually playing an MMO, not stuck in one. I was very amused when she was playing too much and it started affecting her real life.
Finished Bofuri: I don’t want to get hut, so I’ll max out my defense.
Just in time too. My Hulu sub runs out in a few hours. Time to switch to Netflix.
@ArmandoPenblade, have you seen Bofuri? I’d recommend it. It’s only 12 episodes, and pretty self-contained too. Really charming.
I haven’t! In fact, I haven’t finished a new anime series in YEARS. I’ll trade ya, Bofuri for She-Ra ;-)
yay more Bofuri fans. If you haven’t had enough, there’s a translation of the web novel. I read a machine translation before, it was poor. This one is supposed to be better. It shows more stats and motivations.
That feels like an unfair exchange because all of Bofuri is 4 hours long if you skip the intro or ending song most of the time. She-Ra is, what, 20 hours or something? :)
I’m partly on my way though. I subscribed to Netflix yesterday.

So once I was back on Netflix, I could continue my viewing of Hunter x Hunter. As you’ll recall, I was in the middle of the Phantom Troupe arc when I ran out of English language episodes to watch on Hulu.
Continuing from there, I’m just so impressed with this show. For those that haven’t seen it, first the show slowly builds this world with its own set of rules while having engaging characters and fun adventures, then it sets rules on top of those rules while continuing to tell a good story. And then it sets rules for each individual bad guy’s powers and good guy’s powers while still maintaining an engaging adventure. And then it’s got all that in this world of moves and counter-moves where the good guys and bad guys are trying to make plans and trying to anticipate their enemies moves in advance. It’s freaking so much, but because it’s built one step at a time, you’re never lost.
The one criticism I have for the show is that at times it feels like a kid’s show, and you can even watch it with kids. But then at other times it’s really dark and bloody and full of disturbing images that you definitely don’t want kids to see. The wild swings in tone are handled well, but it still makes me a little uncomfortable at times.

I bounced super hard on Hunter x Hunter at the Insect arc. Just couldn’t stand it at that point. Up to then I felt like it started strong and then slowly got worse with each arc. Well, there may have been an small uptick at some point after a particularly short unsatisfying arc, can’t remember now.

Huh. Well, Netflix only goes up to the Greed Island Arc, so I guess I’m safe from the Insect arc ruining my view of the show.
Also, holy shit, look at this:

The insect arc is Huuuuuuuge. 61 episodes!??!??
I had heard that the Chimera Ant arc is the whole reason to watch the show. Quite bummed that I watched the netflix content all the way through and couldn’t watch that.
Undoubtedly, the greatest arc in Hunter x Hunter is the Chimera Ant arc. Along with being the best arc, it is also the longest one in the series and is the biggest reason why the series is as popular as it is today.

I heard the same thing. The tonal shifts Rock mentioned are more extreme and very dark in the arc.
I watched about half of it and just couldn’t anymore. It felt like a whole new show.
It’s been a while though, I don’t remember everything that made me stop.
The Chimera Ant arc is honestly maybe a bit too long. It’s also really kind of 2 arcs. It’s definitely the darkest, but it does sort of subvert some tropes.

I thought that the author of the Hunter X Hunter manga had gotten sick when the show was running and they had to stop for a while (something like that but I do not trust my memory at this point).

Is this HxH 1999 or 2011? Sub or dub?

I loved Recovery of an MMO Junkie (Romance, 30 year old protagonist so older audience) but the lack of ending left my ship in the harbor fuming so I decided the best way to fix that was watch another romance. I ended up watching Bloom into you which is a coming of age / romance story with some interesting bits. I don’t fully understand the character’s motivations compared to recovery since I am not a 15 year old girl.
The undubbed version is better - one reason particular to this title is they used the first names instead of last names to refer to characters. This is very annoying because one of the character’s names is pronounced you.
