Madoka Magicka was so good! :)

Just finished F/Z and started UBW. That order definitely worked fine, though if I did it again I would have flipped them. UBW has a lot of exposition and if you watch F/Z first you know a lot of things the characters don’t. F/Z also expands a ton on a character who is only in flashbacks in UBW.
However, watch UBW first and the ending for F/Z is very spoiled. So maybe that’s a better order shrug emoji
I ended up really loving F/Z. Back half of the series gets pretty dark, but it’s really well done. I was impressed by how well developed the characters ended up being and actually teared up a few times. Series is definitely a tragedy.
This was my second try getting into it; first three episodes or so can be a little confusing trying to fight out how everything relates, but it picks up steam big time.

I started watching UBW based on this thread and wow - this is a big improvement over the original series.
I had forgotten how much of UBWs story relies on the viewer already knowing the base Fate storyline though. I wonder if that means that you should try to watch it in order at the end of the day.

So the latest Game Pass Ultimate perk is you get 2 free months of Funimation for first time subscribers.
I’d never subscribed to them, because it always seemed like they have the same library as Hulu’s anime selection, but only the anime parts. But still, even if that’s the case, two free months sounds good. You have to sign up by Nov 25th.
If anyone has any specific Funimation recommendation, I’d love to hear them.
EDIT: Oh hey, they have that Ping Pong anime you guys recommended in the same breath as the Volleyball one. Nice.
The first thing that comes to mind is Yamato 2199 & 2202

And English dub of One Piece.
Great Pretender on Netflix is basically Leverage: the anime. It’s beautifully animated, colorful, Uniquely stylized, has great character development, an opening sequence that seems inspired by Tank! And closing credits featuring Freddie Mercury.
We’ve watched the first two cases (ten episodes) and it’s tremendous fun. the last case of the season is currently airing in Japan and will drop in the US after that.

I binged it over the weekend and the third case is out!
Really loved it. Nail the caper movie tone and vibe; plenty of humor, but also actual stakes and action.
And, I absolutely adored the art. So distinct.
Highly recommended

Huh. I had specifically stayed away from Great Pretender and other Netflix animes specifically because no one in this thread ever recommends them. It never occurred to me that maybe you guys do the same thing, or just haven’t gotten around to trying them yet.

Great Pretender has been excellent all the way up through the end of the third case.
Netflix as a whole can be a bit hit-and-miss on its original series, but this is definitely one of the hits.
My understanding is that the first generation of Netflix-exclusive anime was basically B-Tier stuff that nobody really wanted to bring over. Since that first wave though, they’ve upped their game and there’s some very well regarded stuff on there. Beastars has gotten a lot of good reviews, I liked BNA, and people seem to like Aggretsuko. Little Witch Academia is cute, and Kakegurui was entertaining but dumb.

Definitely agree on the hit or miss aspect!
I enjoyed Devilman Crybaby and the first season of Knights of Sidonia.
Regarding Great Pretender, I haven’t seen Attack on Titan or other of Wit Studios productions, but it seems like they’re generally well thought of. Definitely on my radar now! IMHO Great Pretender is one of those animes you can recommend to anyone. Great art, fun banter, solid character development. And, minimal fan service.

Oh, and as Misguided said, the intro and closing credits are both great.
Japan Sinks is also quite good, but rather brutally depressing.
What is and isn’t an actual Netflix anime v something they just grabbed the rights to is a bit hard to parse.
Anyhow, the ones I’ve liked
Carole & Tuesday
Devilman Crybaby
Little Witch Adademia
Dorohedoro
Beastars
I still need to finish Great Pretender but have enjoyed what I’ve seen.
Also CGI Ultraman kind of a guilty pleasure.

I love it so much.
UBW had some good moments as well, but Zero just hit more notes.
Every other Fate series I’ve looked at has been meh at best.

Agreed on UBW. Had some great moments, and I liked the characters. But after F/Z it just felt a little flat.
Have you watched Heaven’s Feel? I’ve heard mostly good things about it, but seems slightly more difficult to watch.

I have not. But after bouncing off Aprocrypha I sort of lost interest in following the series.
Whoever thought loud sounds should have mic distortion (not sure if that’s the correct term) over there needs to be slapped.
That isn’t how sound works and it’s super bad when everything is loud.
