So apparently the subtitle of the movie “thrice upon a time” is a reference to this being Anno’s third attempt to end the series. I’ve watched the first two, so I feel I really should watch this one too. The first two attempts were haunting and depressing.

Oh yes, and Prime Video does have all 4 movies, even though there are nowhere to be found on the main menu. You have to use search.

Polygon does another article praising Laid Back Camp, and this whole anime sub-genre of girls hanging out without anything super-dramatic happening. Which I didn’t know was a sub-genre until now. “Iyashikei shows”.

I didn’t realize that either but I have watched Azumanga Daioh which is pretty darn good, K-On which got boring for me, and Flying Witch which I also enjoyed.

Evangelion 3.0+1.0 is already released. I watched it and is well made. I feel that was unnecesary because it don’t say anything new to me, because I saw other shows already cover these points but better, but maybe it will be a great package for a young person that has consumed a lot less media.

I enjoyed the fireworks, but the message was weak.

Jeez, Odd Taxi was just fantastic. Thanks for bringing it up here.

Welcome. I completely missed when it was recommended in this thread and saw a random post elsewhere months after it released. I really liked its vibe and dialogue, which is pretty rare when referencing anime regrettably.

Finally got around to watching 3.0 +1. 01 and it is just great.

I love the concept of the story getting 3 endings. The original being abstract and hopeful. The movie violent and nihilistic, and the third time was cathartic and beautiful.

I definitely agree that you need to have seen both the show and End of Evangelion for this to have the greatest impact.

Glad that this wild and crazy ride is over.

I didn’t know k-on qualified as a “iyashikei”. I loved k-on. I guess the drama is all dumb teenage drama, but isn’t that half of youth anime? This one just happens to be more targeted towards young women than young men.

As an odd tangent, I’ve never quite been onboard with the need to classify anime. I kind of get where discussing tropes can illuminate shows which are unique vs. those which aren’t, and so perhaps it’s just a shorthand for that. However, it just always felt reductive to me.

Watched Beastars S2 over the last couple weeks. I remember liking S1 just fine, it was compelling and had a lot of interesting story hooks, and it was easy enough to ignore the random teenage anime philosophizing that was very typical in older anime that seems to be less prevalent these days. S2 though, ugh. It fully embraced the overwrought philosophizing to the point where it overwhelmed the story, which also had an underwhelming conclusion. A few of the story beats were so nonsensical that they actually took away from the major themes of the show as well. I went from half-heartedly recommending the show to a thumbs down. Also the bunny is essentially gone in the second season, and I didn’t realize how much I liked her character (as fucking ridiculous as she was) until she was gone.

Basically the show went from over-the-top fun ridiculousness to more boring more subdued bullshittery with a few over-the-top moments.

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear came up in the recent discussion/article of about Iyashikei. It’s also an isekai, although it’s very unfocused on the game and mechanics - the MC is essentially just godlike. I binged it and it was fun, just relaxing and low stakes from start to finish. I’ll probably watch a S2 but I’m not going to watch S1 or anything to prep for it like I would a more serious anime that I like.

I’m binging Mamoru Oshii movies, and I was very pleasantly surprised by “Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer”. I always kind of avoided the Lum stuff because of how the tone seemed, but this movie sort of blew me away. It’s legit very weird, and you can really see a lot of the elements that would eventually make their way into the first Ghost In The Shell movie.

Yeah, I watched that movie and liked it a fair bit, despite only have seen a few handful of episodes of the series, and never had intention of seeing more.

Only got into anime beyond Akira really this year (in my early 40s) and finding myself with a massive fondness for 85% of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid while wincing in horror at the… um… problematic jokes about underage characters.

It’s been a long time since I watched Urusei Yatsura but my recollection was that the first two movies were good, as well as the ‘Final Chapter’ finale movie.

Speaking of Oshii, I always thought his take on the Patlabor series were great - better than the manga source material honestly.

I don’t like this season anime. Nothing to like much.

I am angry-watching “Meikyuu Black Company” for reasons, but also hate it.

I’m a bit curious if Kyoukai Senki goes anywhere - first non-Gundam mecha series by Sunrise in about a decade. Seems like they’re targeting kids though.

Yeah, I love his Patlabor movies. They’re just incredible.

Haikyuu!

For those that have been watching the Sub instead of the Dub version: Did Season 4 wrap up the series?

I looked around the internet today for news of when Season 4’s dub version will be out. Looks like people just speculating on forums to expect it at the end of 2021 or beginning of 2022. So not too long to wait now. I hope Season 4 finally finishes the series. I’d love to have closure on an anime like that.

I don’t watch the series but took the bullet since I don’t care about accidental spoilers. S4 did not end the series even after the second part was finished, and there is seemingly no concrete news at the moment about a continuation, just clickbait rumors.
