Yeah, that’s a shame. I even liked it when it was just Crunchyroll and HiDive and Rooster and a couple of other thingies. It was still a good value over just Crunchyroll.
I assume HiDive pulled out of VRV around the time of the Funimation / Crunchyroll merger. They also have started removing their catalog from Crunchyroll. I think they’re trying to get serious about being a competitor now that Funimation is gone.
Sony definitely also wants VRV to go away because the value was too strong over Crunchyroll itself, which is why they stopped doing new season simulcasts on it as well.
Yeah, VRV was like a dollar more than a CR sub? It was basically CR + a lot of other stuff basically for free.
Crunchyroll isn’t on (or is in the process of leaving) VRV either, with the Funmation merge.
It may be in the process of leaving but it is still on there. and basically the entire library (of VRV, not the entire CR library necessarily), so I imagine VRV is not long for this world if so.
It’s basically the same as what’s happening to Funimation itself. Existing stuff continues (until it doesn’t*) and everything new is going only to Crunchyroll.
*I have to imagine at some point the non-Crunchy will stop, probably only staying for now due to contracts.
Watched “When Supernatural Battles Become Commonplace” for my Trigger-catalog full watch. I had no expectations going in at all, but pretty much a complete waste of time. The opening theme is catchy, I guess.
Spy X Family is good. The first few episodes are a bit slow, but it picks up when Yor shows up and they have all their pieces in place. Its cute and charming, and has one or two laugh out loud jokes per episode for me, mostly when it wallows in its own absurdity. I think it’s probably better to watch all at once though.
Maybe I’ll watch My Dress Up Darling while waiting for it to come out? I tend to watch anime in fits and starts, so i may just wait a bit.
Thanks for all the Violet Evergarden recommendations! Wow, this show is great. Just watched the episode with the mother and the little girl. I knew it was going to happen, but doesn’t the whole last few minutes crying.
What terrific storytelling.
Oh boy, get prepared for some character development in the final episodes! Yeah, I cried myself silly. It’s fantastic.
This caught my eye:
Loosely inspired by Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn , Yurei Deco is set in a futuristic world where augmented reality technology and digital avatars co-exist side by side with the physical world. The series follow Berry, a young girl who befriends Hack, a tech wiz and leader of a group known as the Ghost Detectives Club. When Berry discovers the legend of Zero, a mysterious figure said to lurk somewhere beneath the surface of their advanced society, she and Hack embark on a journey in search of them and the truth behind their world.
The latest original anime series from Science Saru, the studio behind hit shows like 2018’s Devilman Crybaby and 2020’s Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Yurei Deco will be directed by Tomohisa Shimoyama and written by Dai Satō, who is known for his work on such anime as Cowboy Bebop , Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex , and Ergo Proxy .
The studio behind Eizouken? Does that mean Devilman Crybaby is good too? Maybe?
I have heard it’s good, yes. Whether it would appeal to the same demographic as Eizouken, I sincerely doubt.
Oh yeah, and the Devil is a part timer sounds like a hilarious premise. I need to track down season 1 of that. I had no idea the title meant that the Devil is a fast food worker.
The 2013 fantasy comedy anime The Devil is a Part-Timer! follows the mundane misadventures of the Demon Lord Satan who, after being defeated in his home dimension of Ente Isla, escapes through a portal that transports him to modern-day Japan. With no knowledge of this world and without his powers, Satan adopts the human identity of Sadao Maou and becomes a part-time employee at a fast food restaurant called “MgRonald’s” in order to survive.
(Season 2 is coming in July).
I’m more interested in Uncle from another world. The manga was so hilarious! Especially if you don’t expect the response of the uncle.
Season one of part timer was good fun.
I like Ghost in the Shell, so finally gave the netflix version of SAC a shot. But dammmmnn. I dont think i can handle the absolutely terrible art style.
I think it’s a lot better in the second season that just launched. I’d have preferred 2D animation, but they do a lot of really dynamic camera work in the action scenes which helps justify the change.
So I had watched the first two episodes of Spy x Family as they aired when I had Cruchyroll, saying I’d come back to it at some point when the season was finished. But you know what, Hulu has the show too, and I currently have Hulu, so I’ve been watching the occasional episode. I think I’ve watched up to episode 8 now, and it’s been such a hoot. The show continues to be very sweet, and keep in mind that this is a comedy primarily, not a serious show, and I think you’ll enjoy it. I sure have.
Oh hey, these all sound great. I know people recommended Ping Pong the Animation to me upthread but at the time I couldn’t find it streaming anywhere. But apparently it’s on Funimation.
