I’d be okay with something in the middle where you have multi-island maps in a session but the outside sessions are paused or whatever they were in 2205 until you go back to them. I don’t play MP or with aggressive enemies so that type of thing would be okay with me.
2205 just went too far in that direction for me and neither of the sci-fi themes ever really worked for me either.
Yeah, I’m not saying 2205 is the superior game, it was just a revelation to me that it kinda had a solution for the plate-spinning problem.
I’m sure there are catches I’m not thinking of, but I wonder if it would be feasible to make “pause off-screen maps” a configurable option? You’d have to allow trade routes to keep running, presumably without depleting on the off-screen region, which I guess is a kind of exploit for producing surplus stuff?
I dunno, just designing out loud because I want to love 1800 and just found it overwhelming.

I’m sure I’ll buy this too but it may have gotten to the point where I have to do something like only select half the DLC to play with at a time.
Seconded, and I think the game is already at this point. Honestly, though, that’s a good thing, as it gives more variety between plays.

I think that’s actually how it is expected to be played. Pretty unique, but in reality not too different than setting Victory Conditions or changing other options.
Someday I hope to have the 64GB of ram it takes to play this…
I bought it to add to the game despite the fact that I’ve played only about 2.5 hours so far and keep intending to get back to it.
But wow, is the Ubisoft Store the worst store ever? I’ve never been able to do anything without trouble through it.
I wasn’t able to apply 100 points in the app to get 20% discount, so I went to the online store instead (1st problem).
At the online store, I applied 100 points for the 20% discount then noticed that there was a 15% code right in a yellow banner on top of the page (FRESH15; which can’t be combined). So I removed the 100 points to apply the 15% code. Presto! But it kept the 100 points, too!
Now have to go through that whole support process just to explain what happened. Gah. Is it worth 20% off of a future game time? It’s the principal of the thing!

The first two planned DLC look gorgeous and have strong themes. I’m not quite sure I grok the 3rd dlc. It’s about industrializing the new world and recognizing its cultural roots, is that it?
Like many others have said, I love the core gameplay loop, but all the plates make my head spin. I don’t like that nagging feeling that focusing on one problem means some other problem is getting worse. I found the game actively stressed me out. As I recall, one can’t pause when issuing orders, right? Is there a gameplay style that can help me manage?

That’s why I wish I could convince one of my gaming buddies to pick it up. I don’t know exactly how the coop works (my understanding was you can play as distinct players or on the same “company” but maybe that’s wrong), but I’d love to be able to delegate some stuff. Or even just have a friend keeping an eye on things in the Old World while I’m toiling away somewhere else.
That’s correct. Whenever I’ve played with friends we’ve all been individual companies, in which case they’re like AI competitors playing their own game but competing with you for resources/islands/etc. We tend to play laid-back co-op games but I suppose you could make it PvPish if that was your bent.
The other option is, as you say, sharing control of a single company. I’ve not done that, but if I understand correctly it would definitely be possible to delegate tasks or territories to other people that way.
The third DLC essentially adds a new citizen tier to the new world. That’s it. So now you have Jornaleros and Obreros - there will be a third tier, with new products and techs and buildings. Something similar to Artisans maybe? We’ll have to wait and see, but I like that. Expansions in other Anno games usually added citizen tiers, so it should be a pretty “beefy” DLC.

Ah OK. Maybe we’ll get more info soon on what that new citizen tier is. The video of the artwork for that third DLC didn’t look as impressive to me. It featured some 2D-ish images of houses with holiday decor, maybe? Though also a glimpse of some nice 3D buildings at the end of the vid.
@KevinC @vinraith I hadn’t realized one could play with friends in that way. I suppose you’d all have to play at the same time? Me, I’m more interested in some way to delegate stuff in single-player mode. Or to pause and jump around. In theory, I suppose one can make a tweak in the New World, jump back to the Old World, jump to the pirates, etc. But I’d always forget what I was trying to do in each spot. I’m not sure I played 2205, but it sounds like the approach there didn’t thrill people either.
On a separate issue, I installed Anno on my D: drive 3 years ago, back when I was using Windows 7. I now boot to Windows 10, so I guess I’d have to reinstall. Ubisoft does remember me, so it acknowledges I have the game. I have to download Ubisoft Connect PC to reinstall, yes?
Also, I’m not sure how to dig out my old save games, as I can’t find my old Windows 7 Documents folder, but maybe I’d start fresh anyway. That’s probably best, right?
I’m hesitant to fire this up again, but I’ll be interested in what folks here say about the upcoming DLC.
It’s because it isn’t finished yet. It’s probably not even in active development at this point. I’m sure they’ll release more screens and info after DLC 2 is released.
So you’re absolutely right, in that that’s how it feels, but in truth there’s almost never some other problem that’s getting worse (outside of combat and timed quests). Resources don’t deplete (unlike in 1404), so steady states are very steady. What can happen, however, is that you’ll be overproducing something so you have a full stock of it, then you start overconsuming it to make a new good, and then it slowly runs down and some minutes later your new production line chokes.
The “trick” to making the most of this (to the extent that it is a trick), is that I tend to batch my changes together–if I need more steel bars, for example, I lay down coal mines, iron mines, foundries, and smelters, and then check at the end that the net production of each good in the chain is zero or positive. This is pretty easy in the statistics screen–just go to the production tab and scroll down looking for the blue bar being longer than the green, or whatever it is, I don’t exactly remember.
It gets more complicated when shipping things between islands, but you can still do it by comparing total consumption/production across islands and making sure you have enough transport capacity.
The thing that can sometimes play havoc with this is money, where you need to maintain a positive flow.

Thanks for those helpful replies. @rhamorim , I appreciate the clarification on the upcoming DLC.
I had a look at all the patch notes since launch, and I was encouraged by several things. First, the devs put a lot of work into a more robust statistics display. Apparently it tracks resources across various islands? That sounds like a big UI improvement. Likewise, the trade-route screens apparently have been improved, and you can click to go directly to a ship. Also, a recent patch made 1/2 speed an option, which sounds great! I often just wanted more time to think. I’m going to give it a go and try anew.
Should I play the campaign again? I don’t think I ever finished it. I got the New World, and I recall doing some quests involving ships and trade routes and expeditions. I’m not sure I can find my old saved games anyway. But should I consider just a sandbox game instead?
Also, for a returning player, any advice on which season of DLC to get first? I read season 2 on Reddit a lot. Thanks!
Big-time. It’s great.
Lots of folks don’t like it, but I do. If you want more direction, go for it. Most of the stuff it asks of you is not timed, fwiw. And don’t bother trying to find your old saves, I think. It merges into sandbox mode at the end, anyway, so there’s not a huge difference. A bunch of quests and set island layout, iirc.

Thanks for your reply. I notice a lot of the patches and DLC add quests or missions. Are those tied to the campaign, or can I get them just by playing sandbox?
They are not tied to the campaign. In fact, you cannot disable them without a mod (AFAIK).
