We’ll just have to disagree. I had a blast with the game, I just ran out of things to do and the loot and progression systems were pretty bad. If they had a better loot system and kept releasing new content/features over time I would still be playing.

Same here. I found the combat immensely satisfying

I really disagree. I love the combat and the moment-to-moment gameplay in Anthem. If it had good endgame progression and content, I’d probably play it daily. To me, it’s PvE Destiny 2 with (good), better combat (good) but 1/5th the content (bad).

1/5th might be generous.

I remember the original post launch roadmap had dumb shit like a “time limited special event” consisting of killing x of the already existing titan mobs. “Wow! That’s so amazing!”

So much aimless, pointless generic shit with no rewards or loot (only a handful of weapon types with 1 skin variation per rarity and that was it) to justify grinding for it nor any connection to the lore and story they were smugly proud of.

Their production pipeline was already super slow with the Frostbite tools PLUS their promise of brand name acting and mocap (o was pissed at all that stunt casting of brand name big name actors) resulted in zero updates past their already late stronghold single update.

Earlier today I read that Phoebe Bridgers sent out a tweet calling David Crosby a whiny bitch.

Internet petition time!

I still feel the whole making an action RPG looter shooter without ever looking at other works in the same genre is the main reason why it didn’t take off as they hoped.

Edit: It’s official.

Oh sonofabitch. I don’t even own the game and I wanted them to fix it. I played the demo and I thought the shooting, teamwork, and and skill mechanics worked well and would have been fun in a better game. But everything that wasn’t those things kept me from buying. Still would have purchased it if they could have turned the game around.

Can’t imagine the few people stuck working on it since release being happy to have wasted years on this thing either way.

What a shame. Very expected for EA, though. If there were one company I would pick to be least likely to be able to see through a redesign/ressurection of a game it would be them. They’re too corporate and just don’t have the vision.

SAD TROMBONE

This seemed inevitable. I guess I have to give credit to EA for even trying for this long.

It’s a shame, but…

Who actually wants to fix a failed game when they could be making a new one that is going to work? Although I doubt much is going to survive from this game, which again is a shame, it was made like no other games like it existed, and it will probably go away and not influence much of anything ever again.

You know, I’m sad. I can recognize that this wasn’t the greatest game but there was a lot going on there that was interesting. I wish things could have turned around, though I don’t know how that would have worked. I wonder if a sequel can happen?

That’s the tricky part that I don’t think a bunch of executives at a publicly held company can really get. I do think it would make sense to dust themselves off, take some lessons learned, and sell “Anthem Next” as “Anthem 2”. But you’re not going to get much traction with a sequel if everyone has a bad taste in their mouths from the state of the first one. So you earn some goodwill by sinking some resources into improving the original and then move on to Anthem 2.

What’s shocking to me is the team size they were saying they needed for Anthem Next. That makes no sense to me unless their content pipeline is every bit as nightmarish as has been rumored. In which case, yeah, it’s never going to work as a live service game. If you’re going to have an evolving game you need to be able to produce new content at a decent clip.

So yeah, maybe there really isn’t much of a choice other than to shut it down. I still think it’s a shame, though, because I loved the gameplay. It was just the endgame loop and the lack of content that was the issue for me. The former seems like it could have been fixed without much in the way of money/resources, they just needed to rework the stat system and how loot was acquired.

Nothing of value was lost.

You played the game more than anyone on this forum, man. :) It clearly offered some sort of value to you.

I had a tumor in my vocal chords that made me lose my speaking voice so I played Anthem during my recovery out of self-loathing. Not having text chat compounded things.

Welp, it seems EA don’t see the pointin investing in anything but a super-hit, and Anthem don’t look like a super-hit to them.

I don’t blame them for that, is their money, just don’t think being this risk adverse will pay in the end.

I love screaming cowboy.

My much-too-cynical take: executives looked, saw they sold a couple million copies at launch, a bunch more since the game has been on sale for ~$10 every month since over the last two years. They figured everyone who wanted a copy probably already had one, and that if they tried to shoehorn a lootbox/monetization strategy in there people would revolt. So, they’ve milked it for all they could, time to shut it down.
