So we’re not getting Anthem 2.0?

Damn, rei! I hope you’re doing okay now. From the very bottom of my heart: fuck cancer.

I did the beta. The battle maps were fun. The loot sucked. The stuff in-between missions was weak, but I too thought they might be able to salvage it for a kind of mindless run and gun coop venture now and then.

I hope they at least learned something from it.

I’m just glad to hear that Bioware won’t be throwing their resources into trying to rescue an older game. I don’t know how many failures they have in them before they close down for good, I just felt like this was not a good gamble.

I wonder how this would have slotted into Andromeda say. Just replacing/augmenting the vehicle sections with flight.

Yup.

It’s kind of a shame really. There were some enjoyable things mushed in with all the not enjoyable things in Anthem. I enjoyed the flying about and shooting stuff, they got the feel of the flying and shooting right I felt. But it was just so bare bones and then they added nothing as the years passed by. I was hoping they’d do something with it, but with Don EA hanging over their shoulder I guess that was always unlikely.

I endorse this take. Money talks, and it is probably not worth throwing good money after bad.

The thing is though, a game can have a very long tail nowadays, especially MMO if done right. Think WoW. Or Guild Wars 2. They probably didn’t have faith in Anthem in the first place, so that makes the decision a lot easier.

I was thinking of jumping in when 2.0 hits, now thanks EA, for sparing me even that.

Bioware cannot be trusted to release a good game, or to fix it after release. What a shame.

Does this mean Mass Effect and Dragon Age sequels come out fasterer?!?

We know the Anthem team has been folded in DA, so perhaps.

Faster than if they’d raided those teams to put on Anthem 2.0, yeah, probably.

Wow. Fuck cancer, hope it is gone now. And you officially have a licence to hate Anthem and Bioware and EA. Fuck them!

Good news, and a smart business move. Write off Anthem, put those people on a project with a chance of success.

The number of games that’ve recovered from such a disastrous launch can be counted on the fingers of one hand. No Man’s Sky, Final Fantasy 14… umm… that’s it.

Diablo 3 doesn’t count, it had major problems and was revitalized by its expansion but it sold a ton of copies and was actively played throughout. Fortnite doesn’t count either, the original game was never actually released.

Edit: Actually Elder Scrolls Online should be on that list, IMO.

On that list 2 are MMOs where the sunk cost is astronomical and it makes sense to try and right the ship. No Man’s Sky was was a minimal risk to chance a recovery considering small team + plenty of cash on hand.

Anthem fits neither of those criteria. Probably wise to cut their losses.

I hope this discourages GAAS. So much for 10 year franchise or Project Dylan.

Bioware has never, ever, been able to figure out loot. It’s even beyond that, their loot is actively depressing…it doesn’t even rise to the level of bad. They just plain don’t understand it at all, and never have. Oddly enough, to me, it’s the easiest thing to fix. What a shame.

It was the ultimate in arrogance to launch with no loot and ignore friendly advice from Diablo 3’s loot 2.0 designer.

They lacked even the basics of looter shooters like communication basics, working multiplayer options and showed extreme hubris

Forced multiplayer fused into a slow pointless first person fort view. Lack of loot, lack of server stability, lack of modes, lack of content and lack of proper gameplay mechanic design all counting on the BioWare magic or name to sell with the promise of the remaining 50% game to be released at a TBD on a joke of a roadmap.

The gall to blame COVID when their first and only content update came out 9 months after launch in 2019 before coronavirus.

Half the game spent on loading screens.

Dang. I pre-ordered it just out of support for Bioware but never actually played it. Now I HAVE to play it before it’s gone.
Any word on when it goes dark?

They’re keeping the servers open, and the rotation of live events will presumably continue. Only the revamp is cancelled. That’s what they have said anyway.

Honestly, I had a lot of fun with it. It just wore out its welcome rather quickly which is a major problem for a live service game. Especially if you have it, I would recommend firing it up and enjoying being Iron Man for a while.
