One thing I will say: I enjoyed myself on the Xbox (did the EA Access 10 hour thing) but ended up buying it on PC because the frame rates were just too low on the One X for my tastes. Thus far, my experience this morning with Anthem on PC has been 5 failed attempts to get past the first MP-enabled mission. The first time through the mission got glitched, then I’ve crashed twice in mission and crashed twice just trying to get set up for the mission (one crash at the Forge, one crash trying to load up the mission).
Is this courtesy of the Day One patch or am I a unicorn?
All right, I think I’m going to bail on this thread, I did this ride with Andromeda and it wasn’t much fun then either. Maybe I’ll see you guys in-game.

I played through the first couple of missions on PS4 this morning, and it was great actually. Good enough to play remotely from work even. and the MP worked in the two missions I did without issue. So PS4 experience so far is much better than the demo issues.
I’m with you regarding Andromeda. I think that game got a bad rap and was dogpiled by memes. It was lesser Mass Effect, but I enjoyed what I played - admittedly after all the patching.
I don’t play looter shooters, never played Destiny, so no idea. But I assume there was better loot, better gunplay and the missions took place in more than one environment so that is why it was not so brutally dunked? Plus it came out years ago.
Andromeda suffers from some dodgy writing and big filler problem, but on the whole it is a fun game I would easily give 8/10 (also played post-patches). Finished it and enjoyed it well enough. At least it was an RPG. Hell I liked it more than Inquisition.
Yeah, Destiny 1 started out with awesome gunplay and a single fantastic raid. It lacked content, but it eventually built up to a great experience with lots to do, and satisfying ways to advance.
Destiny 2 was disappointing at launch because it was clearly built off of the foundation of Destiny 1 somewhere around the middle of its life cycle, failing to include a lot of the later improvements to the quality of life, loot, advancement, etc.
And Destiny 2 was rightly criticized for this. Over time, it’s also gotten to a pretty good place.
I haven’t touched Anthem, but if it’s starting in a similar place to Destiny 1 or 2 at their launches, Anthem deserves all the same criticism they got, seasoned to taste based on your patience as a new developer steps into this genre, or impatience as time marches on.
That both Destinys eventually got to a great place isn’t an excuse for how they started, and shouldn’t be an excuse for Anthem.

Destiny 2 came out 18 months ago, it’s not some kind of ancient history.
In terms of “better loot”, I’d have to argue that Destiny definitely does not have better loot… Perhaps Borderlands does, with its craziness, but the types of loot differentiation in Anthem is actually greater than what you see in Destiny.
Most guns in destiny just had very minor modifications to base stats of the guns themselves, and the guns’ types were basically the same as what you see in anthem… actually larger variation in terms of anthem.
The addition of components in Anthem actually has a significantly larger impact on the variation of what your character can do, compared to what loot in destiny did, with the exception of legendary items in Destiny… If I recall, legendary items in Destiny were the only items that had any kind of interesting unique effects. But it seems like Anthem does the same thing with masterwork items.
In terms of gunplay, that’s a fair assessment, but Destiny was a 1st person shooter. This is largely personal preference, but I’ve never played a third person shooter where the gunplay felt as good as a solid first person one. But Anthem is far more about skills and mobility than Destiny, so I think this was an intentional design decision rather than just some failure.
I guess ultimately, all this stuff is subjective, but it seems like folks aren’t quite grading these games on the same scale. It may be because different folks are interested in a bioware game compared to a bungie game.
I definitely get a feeling that a lot of the criticism leveled at Anthem is coming from folks who really wanted more of a single player, old-school bioware RPG. And this isn’t that.
The hell it doesn’t. If you choose to rush the main story and not see it, that’s your problem. What a ridiculous thing to say. Have you even talked to any of the NPCs? Yeesh. Maybe you’re being sarcastic? I can’t tell.
@KevinC that’s weird. I think I’ve had 2 crashes in about 25 hours. Wish I knew what to tell you. You might check your cpu temps, since that seems to have been an issue for some.
I’m with you, I don’t think the comparison to Destiny has served Anthem well. They are so different they may as well be in different genres. But they aren’t considered that way.
Bioware did a weird thing making Anthem this way, and by trying to offer a new take on the looter shooter they opened themselves up to a lot of criticism, both fair and unfair.
I think a lot of people don’t really know what to make of this game just yet, so they are falling back on what they know, which is Destiny and The Division.
And since the game is so buggy and disjointed and badly optimized, it’s pretty easy to dunk on.

The dialog with the NPC’s I actually like and I think have some good things. I am talking more about the missions part of the game.
I am not some weirdo with a unique opinion.
The “the game have no soul” is mirrored by many reviewers and people independently end in that conclusion. Is not just me.

For whatever reason, after that crashtastic start I haven’t had any issues since. Sixth time was the charm, I guess? :)
Those reveiewers are full of it, but this is nothing new.
The youtube reviews I’ve seen appear to be more fair than the game sites, and give a better overall impression, without papering over the faults.
Some of them, certainly. I thought Dantics did a decent job of highlighting the flaws in a video that was overall positive. Then there are the angryjoe’s of the world, which are legion.

Borderlands invented the “looter shooter” genre, and it has tons of variety and ridiculously awesome loot.
The problem is Borderlands 2 came out a bunch of years ago and Destiny, Destiny 2, and Anthem all suckle goat balls in comparison.

Borderlands released at about the same time Hellgate London. Neither had a concept of endgame, but people made one out of collecting weapons in Borderlands. Sometimes thats enough for a looter shooter: loot and enemies.
Heres HGL ending video, I am posting it here fore reasons.
Yeah, I hear ya. I guess what I meant say was, the people that are actually playing and trying to give an honest impression, seem to be giving it a fairer shake. It’s not universally panned by the gaming community.

HG:L actually came out 2 years before Borderlands, and yes, I would agree that the Marksman class counts as a real looter/shooter. Excellent point.
Borderlands 2 did have an endgame with raid bosses and such. Now in the age of Destiny 2 and Anthem, I think we all forget just how awesome BL2 was.
