TL;DR

  • Item bonuses don’t apply to the item giving the bonus, and this is confusing.
  • The three strongholds have a wide difficulty scale, but the rewards are the same, so no reason to do the harder ones.
  • (offers quick solution to the one above by adding a random selection of strongholds, but offering a “magic find” bonus)
  • Activities aren’t well matched to specific rewards, so there are less than ideal ways if you’re interested into something specific. Not much control over what you’re seeking.
  • Difficulty ramps up way too fast from GM1 to 2.

…I don’t know why Bioware would need such insight from a Diablo 3 dev, it seems kind of obvious.

Yes, you can set any mission to be private, which will not automatically matchmake you with other folks. And then this addresses the issues with you being forced to play it with idiots who just want to rush through everything. Although perhaps that’s not a fair characterization… if someone has already done the missions, then sure they may not want to take the time again.

But if you are playing through the missions on your own, I would highly recommend playing them alone, or with people you actually enjoy gaming with, because you’ll get a lot more out of them than if someone is just rushing through to the end as fast as possible.

For all of the criticism of Anthem’s story, there’s FAR more story to be had in those missions than anything Destiny offered. The actual gameplay for the missions is fairly repetitive (kill all the dudes here, gather the parts, etc.), but the stuff that is being said actually has various different storylines.

Yeah, I’ve been enjoying all of that too.

Great post. While I enjoyed the story for what it was, your criticisms are fair.

@Scott_Dobros be aware there are only a few MWs that can be found in hard. The entire pool isn’t available.

@jsnell you have to spend coin to make masterworks? I had no idea that was the case. Can’t say I’m a fan of making the player choose between buying cosmetics and crafting items.

No, you don’t. You really don’t. If you need materials for MW’s, put together a profile with lots of +harvesting bonuses and head out into freeplay. Masterwork Embers flow in pretty quickly.

As for the coins, you earn them pretty quickly. They can even drop from mobs and chests. I started with 40k. I’ve spent about 90k, and I currently have 70k… no complaints there.

Oh, I get it…that 5k was to buy EMBERS. Ok, those people are just stupid then. Buying embers, lol. Thanks.

Ya, I think there are like 5 MW guns in hard. Still gearing up to take on GM1.

Be sure to do your daily legendary contracts. You can get three, and each is guaranteed to drop a MW Component. Those are huge for increasing survivability.

Yeah. Looking forward to that. Those start at loyalty 3? I’m still not there yet.

I was tempted to make a list of a bunch of youtubers (at least the most prominent ones) but at this point it would be near infinite and incredibly spammy.

But this is one of the last:

Daily quests are the crutch of mobile games and MMOs when the game itself fails to draw in the player.

silly game devs, they would still lose their jobs even if the game did well because only skeleton crew is needed for live ops. and because it’s the game industry and the firings will just happen after a game releases.

For fuck’s sake. Timex is the one who said that there was no problem with this system since you could “just buy more embers”. I just wanted to understand why that didn’t match up with what other sources were saying about buying mats not being a practical option due to the price.

I am glad there has been a broad spectrum of opinions in this thread with several Anthem advocates defending the title and listing positives.

That said, no has really made a compelling case for why one should play the game today and not, say, in a year…whether by purchase or Origin Access Premium.

The non-gun combat and movement/traversal do look like the high points of Anthem at this juncture but it appears that the rest of the game doesn’t really respect the player’s time (which is a critical sticking point for me theses days).

This looks like it might be a fun game to try in a year when core design flaws are addressed or smoothed and after technical performance gains, content adds, and loot overhauls are implemented.

Unfortunately I am still stuck due at the beginning of the game due to not being able to access the forge to select my first javelin and as a result can only wander aimlessly around Fort Tarsis. The workaround someone suggested here earlier does not work, as at this point in the game, you cannot be ‘invited’ to a mission.

This is a cross-platform bug and is detailed here:

But in that thread, there is no official communication, except for rumors that it might be a known issue/etc and no ETA.

It kind of boggles my mind that this kind of ‘thing’ can happen on a console (PS4 for me), but I guess now that console games can be easily patched, there is no incentive for developers to release stable products.

I’d ask for a refund at this point from the Playstation Store, but I think with PS4, if you played it, you own it unlike Steam.

But yours got a reply, so you win :)

Do not think Bioware had replied by the time I posted it either, so have to re-read it now.

2/5 review, I guess this time QT3 wont be attacked by rabbid fanbois regarding the rating. I am wondering if this gets rated harsher than “normal” because people see the squandered promise of the game.

I’m at 80+ hours and a gearscore of 594, I have 160 ‘exotic’ embers, that is enough to make 6 duplicate exotic guns with shitty rolls. Imo, the cost for an exotic at 25 embers is way too expensive. An Epic costs 5.

If you get a god roll gun you’d probably outdamage my Storm at 530 gearscore, as most of my legendary/exotic gear has terrible rolls on it. With the loot drop nerf recently it will take ages to regen it.

Are you playing GM1 now or at Hard?

Ok, just for you - the reason you should play Anthem.

It’s a sensuous experience, a little sexy and definitely pleasing to the senses. This is how I want to enter a suit of mechanical armor. I want it padded and snug. I want to feel protected. I want to feel invincible.

I don’t really think there is one. I suppose if you were at all concerned that by waiting 6-12 months that the game would be a ghost town, that might be the only reason. There is some content coming out on a timed basis (see Anthem road map), and it’s not clear how much of that may be a one-time thing, but I doubt it is compelling enough to say you must play it now.

The main reason I’m playing now is because I gave the game a lot of time in the demos and I really enjoyed it, flaws and all. There are some definite frustrations, and lots of bugs that would make waiting a smart choice. The game will likely only get better with time.

Sure there is one. I play the game because it’s fun and it sounds more appealing than the other options at the moment. That’s today, and it’s irrelevant if it’s better in a year. I’ll play it again then too.

Sure, if I tried to put it on a spreadsheet and calculate what game offers more, something like Warframe would demolish it. But that’s not how entrainment works, at least not for me.

Part of the appeal is a new game with a combat model I really enjoy, and a new movement/traversal model. I have four javelins to kit out and experiment with. That will keep me occupied for a while because I enjoy the actual gameplay.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Warframe, but I have 1,000 hours in that game over the years. I’ve kind of done it all, so there are fallow periods where I don’t play it and then a bunch of new content draws me back. Anthem will likely do the same, assuming they’re able to keep working on it.

Here’s that weapon in use…
