I finally found the boss at the end of 2-2. Instead of going the long way I decided to spend some time exploring the long tunnel where players leave silly messages like “jump down here”, which I followed in the past but only plunged to my death.
But since I had no souls to lose today, I decided to experiment. I jumped at varying speeds along different paths for about an hour, and finally found my way all the way down to the bottom, where I found Flameeater.
Boy, that was an adrenaline-enducing fight. What an unexpected boss in a game like this, where so far the bosses have all been kind of slow and ponderous, in a way. Beating him was very satisfying.
But then I moved ahead and encountered what was in the chamber behind him.
YIKES! And also: HOLY SHIT. How can I possibly have a chance against THAT?
Anyway, my way is now clear. I think I’ll tackle the boss I can’t see who kills me through the floor in 4-1, or perhaps I’ll explore the area I unlocked by beating the boss of 3-1. Er… I guess that would be 3-2. I could also check out what’s in the fifth area, but I’m saving that.
I’d offer hints and help, but the game is just so much fun to solo explore at ones own pace.
It’s interesting that I planned out this whole month where my wife was going to be away as a time I could sit down and play through New Vegas. But my computer didn’t cooperate, and I ended up playing so much Demon’s Souls again. I also got Dark Souls, but unfortunately I got that for my PC, which was a mistake considering I’m having problems on the PC. But it’s amazing how the games like this and Torchlight 2, which on Elite Hardcore is even more punishing than this game, can get their hooks in you so deep.
Unfortunately, games like this also require a time commitment that I won’t have once my wife flies back into town on Friday. So it’s goodbye Demon’s Souls for the most part after Friday. But that doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the shit out it until then.
Every time I get to the boss in 4-1, I get killed so fast that I can’t get a good lay of the land. And I hate how tight and cramped the place is. My biggest fear is that this will be another boss where I’ll have to cheese my way to a victory somehow.
Let’s see, how many bosses have I done that with so far? Definitely 1-2, I long-distance cheesed my way through that one. 2-1, where I found a spot where the enemy couldn’t hit me but I kept sniping the enemy with my soul arrow. The dragon in 1-2 that I just beat with arrows who keeps following the same pattern and never deviating no matter how much it gets hit, even though I’m in plain sight, I’d count that as a cheesy win too. I don’t know how to classify 3-1, I think that was actually a fight that I didn’t really cheesy. 2-2 was a fair fight, and very exciting because of that.
But this room is so cramped, I’m probably going to keep looking for a corner where his tongue can’t reach me, if I can find one. Where I can shoot him from. I have to wonder about the design decision around making a room this small with an enemy who can one hit kill you, giving you no real room to dodge his attacks. Maybe it’s a puzzle I’m meant to solve. Hmmm.
Is your copy from the playstation store or an EU copy? I ask because I sent a friend request to you but in the trophy thing it doesn’t line up right.
It’s an asian copy. When I started playing there was no EU or US version announced yet.
I would say 4-1 should be your next move Rock8. That will also unlock the reaper farm spot so you can level a bit really quickly. If you are having trouble try to grab a few blue souls.
Also there is a pretty nifty shortcut through 3-1 that cuts out…well almost all of it except the last red eyed skeleton.
Happy Hunting!
Do you mean shortcut through 4-1? Since that’s the one with the red-eyed skeleton guarding the door to the tongue dude?
Yeah, I found the shortcut first, I still haven’t found the proper way. Just like with 2-2, the proper way is too long. I found the shortcut the first time I was in that area, because I was trying to get to this loot that I could see in the corner. Big shining yellow light of loot is like a beacon to me. I has to have it, my precious!
But sadly, since then I’ve been trying to get to the end the proper way, but I always get killed on the way somewhere, usually different spots. So I finally gave up going the proper way and just use the shortcut now.
Unfortunately, the shortcut requires killing five skeleton warriors and three archer skeletons on my way to that last red eye skeleton guarding the door, which takes quite a while to do. Each run takes me a long time, unlike the 2-2 run, where I finally had it down to about 3 minutes to the boss each time.
You don’t have to cheese the 4-1 boss.
not very spoily spoiler
He has a weak spot you are supposed to exploit which requires lots of well-timed dodging. You need to get close and stay close.
Doable and very fun. One of my favorite Demon’s boss fights.
Yeah. I meant 4-1 Rock8. Do you have the blessed mace from 5-1, that’s a pretty good weapon for the skeletons that doesn’t require much upgrading (if any). Definitely use a blunt weapon on em though.
Also I suggest a thief ring so you can pull the skeletons on the stairs one by one.
I finally beat 4-1. I finally said, you know what? Demon’s Souls is always about finding out information about your enemy and your environment, and this fucker kills me too fast, so I need a way that I can survive that first hit so that I can explore a little and find out the lay of the land and his moves. At the very least I need to be able to survive one hit so that I can have a better chance of dodging him.
So I took off the one ring that I’ve worn since 1-1: The Thief Ring. Every time I’ve taken off the Thief ring, I’ve regretted it, and died soon after, but I thought that in this case, the Adjudicator already knows where I am, so the Thief Ring is worthless. And I put on The Regenerator Ring, of course, and … the Ring that I thought would be useful but I’ve never found a use for even though it was the first ring I found in the game: The Cling Ring.
With my hit points way up and constantly regenerating, I went in there, and beat his ass. Being able to survive one hit was HUGE. He managed to hit me a few more times during the fight, because I’m clumsy and I make mistakes, but thanks to the Cling Ring and the Regenerator ring, I was able to get my hit points back each time. Poor Adjudicator.
Now I realize why the game designers put him in a small room like that. It wasn’t to make your life harder. It was to protect you from him. They’re big softies these designers, huh? :)
And now I’m making my way through 3-2. That beating heart was making me so tense, I had to take a break. This game is going to give me a heart attack, I swear. Those of you who thought Dead Space was even a little bit scary better never play this game.
3-1 my favorite area of Demons souls, just the atmosphere of that place and the lack of actual background music everywhere else.
I always liked 2 (all of em). I like the idea of descending into the dwarven mine deeper and deeper until you discover the evil in the mountain that corrupted everything. Plus I love the look of the ancient temple the Flamelurker is guarding.
Ah. 2-2, not 2-1. I went to him in 2-1, but he doesn’t sell the L. stones that I need. I do remember encountering him in 2-2, but that requires going the long, long way down. I haven’t done in that portion in a couple of years. This should be exciting.
So, for the first time I’m kind of scared that the game might be a little bit broken. In the beginning of 4-2, it seems like there’s a slow easy-to-kill enemy that spawns infinitely until I kill the source. It seems like I can just farm these guys however long I want and leveling up will never be a challenge again, except for just being careful to farm them carefully? Please tell me this isn’t so. It seems really out of character for this game.
That is the prime “farming” spot in the game. It’s a little broken, but after a short while, it begins to take a number of runs to get a level – which, for me, became very boring. It also never removes the fact that the primary challenge of DeS is skill-based rather than stat-based.
Personally, I just used that spot to qualify for the weapons/equipment I wanted to use and then went and continued the game again.
You all are really getting me psyched for another playthrough. :)
Great points. Plus I realized myself that it wasn’t broken when I looked and found that these guys only give 200+ souls each, which isn’t much, considering it takes me about 10,000 souls to level at this point (around level 42 now). So farming that spot, even for me, isn’t all that lucrative anymore in terms of the amount of time it takes. So good, the game isn’t broken because of it’s inherent leveling system and the point in the game where I got to this point.
I’ve got a lot of exploits in mind if I ever replay from the beginning though. :)
Still, this is a nice way to get enough souls to quickly repair and upgrade my equipment. Now I just need to build up a little stack of souls and then go down 2-2 until I find that filthy man again. :)
I went on my epic vendor quest today. I wasn’t going to go down the mines with upteen number of souls to my name in order to buy stuff. That’s just asking for trouble. So I went there empty handed. I finally made it to the vendor, and finally started using all those unknown soldier’s souls and unknown hero’s souls I’ve been collecting. To eat them all took me about half an hour. What a horrible interface this game has for eating souls from your inventory.
Anyway, when I finally had eaten most of the souls on me, I bought all the L. Sharpstones and L. Hardstones I could afford. And that got me just enough that when I evacuated back to the vendor, I was able to upgrade my purple shield to +7 I believe, and my Winged Spear to +8.
Woo! I’m also really happy with having found a use for all those souls in my inventory.
I think you could equip the lesser souls to your consumable item slots for easier mashing.
