Really enjoying exploring the second world. That game does do a couple of things that annoy me though, for instance using knee high geometry to prevent me getting to a path that I obviously could get to.
I popped my head into the three other worlds too, they looked terrifying.
Have fun!
Just note that even if they seem terrifying, it isn’t necessary or recommended to try to beat world 2 before going onto the other ones. There’s no real cross-world gating, so if you get stuck in one world, try out the other ones.
I don’t play many games, but invest a ton of time in those I do choose to play. I basically play a game for under 2 hours, or over 100. There’s no inbetween.
Sounds like you’re off to a good start, and doing the right thing by poking around to check out all options. I like World 2 a lot too. Demon’s Souls also does a good job at making each individual level of a world quite different from the others in that world, even though obviously connected, and that’s certainly true of World 2.
Now I’m thinking about it, I’m not sure how the world numbering works. So I might have been talking about world three.
I hit kind of a brick wall yesterday were I wasn’t able to progress anywhere and I lost a lot of souls. Today I’m not sure it it matters, but it was annoying at the time. It is bugging me how linear the worlds are so far, I’m wondering if I’d actually prefer Dark Souls, what I’ve seen of it suggests there’s more exploration.
I totally hate the world in a chasm with wooden platforms at all odd angles. I keep falling off and it’s winding me up pretty badly.
Yeah, that’s the world most people like the least. There’s a very similar area in Dark Souls too.
Don’t worry about losing souls - there’s always opportunities to farm many more. The worlds are all relatively linear, although there’s some large open areas, and often alternate routes once you open up short-cuts. Dark Souls is basically the same design, except with larger areas and campfires to respawn at within them – the world is largely connected, so you don’t have to/get to access them through a central hub, but the levels still play out in a similar fashion (i.e. largely linear progression until you open shortcuts).
Third demon down! Hmm, was I suppose to be saving these large demon souls? Whoops…
I really don’t know what I’m doing when I level up my character. So far my choices have been rather scatter-gun. I’ve put quite a lot into luck, which is probably a terrible idea, because it seems like it’ll reduce the time I have to spend grinding for healing items and also plague is the worst.
This game was totally giving me the vibe of something I played when I was a child. It couldn’t have been the Knightmare first person dungeon exploring game, could it? Am I the only one that remembers that brutal monstrosity? Was that even released in the US? It was sold as a tie in to the amazing kids TV show in the UK, despite having nothing whatsoever to do with it.
Yes, the boss demon souls can be used to make special weapons later on. It’s not a huge deal if you burned a couple, but definitely save all the ones you get from now on. I don’t consider it cheating to use a wiki for upgrade help, there’s little to no info within the game.
I did the same thing as you in my first playthrough, I figured high luck would be helpful overall. It doesn’t help much, but you aren’t screwed, you can always grind a couple level later on to make up for it. There is a weapon later on that uses luck as it’s primary stat, so you could always look at the in the end game.
Your first build is always going to be a little screwed up since you don’t know what the various options are yet. It’s not a big deal.
Has anyone tried to go back and play Demon’s Souls after playing Dark Souls? I’ve got the free PS+ version sitting on my hard drive while I wait for Dragon’s Dogma: Dark arisen to finish downloading.
I’ve spent over 200 hours with each Demon and Dark, but I am worried I might tarnish my fond memories if I boot up the old one.
I did, briefly.
The transition is a little wonky, especially with stuff like rolling, etc, but I’d say it holds up. The environments are such a large part of those games, so the experience is different enough that it doesn’t directly compare.
I just starter playing Demon’s again last night after beating Dark Souls for the 3rd time. It’s actually great, mainly because I can’t remember anything.
The only part that is really crazy to adjust to is that the weapon upgrade system in Demon’s Souls was COMPLICATED. At some point in time I understood it, but now I’ve got no idea. I’m only planning on beating it once, so just +X is probably good enough, but I took a glance at a wiki for how to upgrade and memories of doing differential equations and quantum mechanics to try to figure out to make Schrodinger’s Sword all came flooding back.
Also, the interface looks ANCIENT. It’s amazing how much touching up a few screens did for Dark Souls. You character equipment screen in Demon’s Souls looks like it is from Windows 3.11 or something.

The adventure begins!
I have acquired a friend’s PS3 for about a month to play through this. We checked it out for an hour and died a couple times. (Hey, how about a shortcut?!) The controls and graphics are perfectly tolerable. Lots of player ghosts and messages in the early areas.
I look forward to exploring this world!

I bought a download copy of this too but haven’t tried it. It was one of the games I had in mind when I bought my used PS3 not too long ago. For some reason I have a hard time booting up the PS3 and sitting and playing on it instead of the computer. I did get through The Last of Us and loved it. Finished Uncharted 2 and played some MLB The Show.
I’m envious that you guys get to play this for the first time. It’s far and away my “best game of the generation” for last gen.
Playing this game last, it’s remarkable how similar everything is, yet how much they’ve refined the formula over the years. All the blocking, dodging, and animation priority is there… it’s just light years better in the latest games.
I can already tell how bittersweet this game will be. It’s such a shame it’s stuck on the PS3 instead of living forever on PC at high resolution and stable framerates. It deserves a current-gen remake at least. I can barely see all the cool stuff happening because the graphics are so muddled.
Be sure to watch the intro every time and don’t just skip it. I always watched every time up to the point where the title card “Demon’s Souls” came on the screen (everything after that can be skipped). It really helped set the mood every time. It didn’t matter if I’d played the game earlier that morning, or two months ago, or two years ago. I’d watch that intro and instantly be in the right mood to play the game again. I think that’s one of the primary reasons why I love this one so much, but couldn’t get very far in the follow ups. That intro is like a mood-setter/hyping machine that just gets me in the right mind-set.
Dude, I’m happy for you, but you’re weird. I’m not going to watch the intro movie every time. Console game intro screens are long enough for someone like me who likes to jump in and out of a game quickly sometimes.
I also wish I could play this with a DS4. It feels a lot more solid.

Oh god, yes. I couldn’t get past 1-1 due to the tech jank.
You’re weak!
Like I said, it’s playable. But I’m not exactly here for the sheer joy of combat like the other three games.
I like it much better than Dark Souls, although I played that primarily on the PS3 too, so graphics were largely the same. Better level and creature design.
