Downside is you need to fight the bosses solo, because you need to go human to summon help.

but you can go human in front of the fog gate and look for summon signs. Ah, OK, if you die then your tendency goes down
When I first played through the game I suicided in the nexus after bosses to go back to Soul form, not to get Pure White but to avoid player invasions. I just happened to get Pure White doing this. (I had no idea at the time)
You can achieve pure white after clearing the first two bosses. Case in point I was able to grab the Dragon Bone Crusher sword before beating the Dragon God.
I thought you needed that to break the stones? It took me forever to figure that out. That sword doesn’t appear without pure white? How the fuck you supposed to kill that boss then?
I spent like 20+ runs on him last night before I figured it out btw. Trying to bait him into punching the debris himself and dying.
I know it goes against the grain & style for the series, but they make it SO HARD for new players to get started. Freaking EVERYTHING is unexplained or purposely obfuscated. Maybe just A LITTLE hand-holding would be nice for us newbies sometimes (and yes I’m already in easy mode playing Royal).
My attempts at progressing much beyond stage 1-1 so far vacillate between:
- Banging my head against something that seems very hard & eventually figuring out how to move past it (rare but satisfying when it happens I’ll admit)
- Banging my head against something else that seems very hard & eventually finding out that it’s SUPPOSED to be impossible at this stage, so quit trying & wasting your time
- Decision paralysis at investing in character or gear upgrades since the game systems are SO opaque that I’m scared to death (ha) of irrevocably breaking my character or game by choosing poorly
- Quiting the game and playing something which doesn’t cause undue stress and paralysis

You can break it yourself with a powerful strike, try holding your weapon two handed to get more damage
The opaqueness is part of the mad genius of the design of these games. They very much are in part about community, in game evidenced by the message/bloodstain system. This extends beyond ‘in game’ though with the way it encourages people to go online and read more to figure shit out and discuss it in forums.
My only complaint is the lack of re-spec. But, your build typically dictates what gear you invest in, so changing from Fighter to Mage, for example, probably won’t work. Respeccing your Mage to remove those ill-advised points in Strength, though, might be worth it.
On the other hand, once you understand the levels you can (mostly) breeze through them. I got my mage character back to where my paladin was in less than a night of playing. I got all the bosses I had killed before on the first try. Flamelurker took 3 attempts, and I wound up gambling and summoning a helper to divide his attention.
Perhaps. But if we take that too far then the game becomes closer to an MMORPG or shooter, which simply CAN’T stand on their own as enjoyable works without the Internet and community and etc. I’m not sure that’s a game I want right now (and yes I know that’s MY problem then :-)

I don’t think there’s anything that’s SUPPOSED to be impossible but you should remind yourself to take a break from the headbanging from time to time to try new areas or approaches. There’s often stuff in other realms that may greatly help the one you are struggling on.
Also know that just about every level you increase raises your defense skills so no matter how bad your stat picks are you will be better equipped to handle whatever comes at you.

What do I do with all this equipment I don’t need? Can I sell it somehow? Donate it to some poor soul?
Put it in the box in the Nexus. No you can’t sell it, it’s a weird thing.

What should I be putting points into as Royalty? I did 2 into magic so I could carry a second spell. Speaking of which… what spells should I get?
Also, do I want to use or eat the phalanx demon soul?

Endurance (gives stamina and equipment weight), Magic (spell power), and Intelligence (MP and spell slots) are probably the priority. Maybe a bit of Strength for weapon requirements if there’s something you want to use, or Vitality if you want more HP. You can find weapons that scale off of Magic, so keep an eye out for that if you’re pumping it up (there’s one accessible early in 4-1 that can carry you through a big chunk of the game).
Alternatively, you can build more toward a typical Strength or Dex build if you prefer, and just use the magic as a supplement.
Go ahead and grab whatever spells sound good, and try them all out.
Hold on to boss souls. You’ll eventually be able to use them for unique equipment and spells.
You can play your Royal just like your old Knight if you want, but with Soul Arrow. That’s one option.
Another is just to put enough into Strength that you can use the Purple Flame Shield, which you can find in 1-1. After I found that, I figured I had to use it, so I got my strength up to 22 to use it. And then since I had 22 strength, I had a lot of options on weapons after that too.

One thing to note about strength requirements on weapons: if you don’t meet the requirement outright you can get a 50% strength stat bonus if you wield a weapon 2 handed.

This. It can actually carry you through the whole game. It also scales with magic, i.e. more damage as you increase your magic stat. If you want more tips as to where to find it then let me know.
Classes are just starting items and stats. Build to the style you want to play not the class name.
Ummm, you don’t need any specific weapon to break the debris. Any weapon will work…
