If not for the help here I think I would have given up. But now I’m enjoying it tremendously.

it’s this hump of the beginning until it starts to click. At that time it was a bit much.

I’m stuck in the Valley of Defilement. I get nearer the bottom where there’s a rope bridge, and this lumbering troll-like thing with a club comes running at me. So far my attacks haven’t hurt him bad so I’m wondering what the trick is for him? Slicing? Piercing? Fire? Magic?

The giant depraved ones are deadly but they telegraph their attacks slowly. If you can maneuver around them swords plus rolling can work otherwise keep your distance and attacks from long range with spells or bow. They are terrifying when they run at you but can’t climb ladders.

Ok, problem is it’s on a rope bridge and I’m not sure there’s enough space on either side to roll around.
BTW, is there a difference between knights shield +1 and tower shield as far their ability to block? I know one will allow parry and the other does shield bash, but the numbers for guard break would match. I’m also confused why shields have a value for attack power, even the Buckler. Why is that? It can’t even hit anything.
The knights shield is a pound lighter so may be better for my overall.
You can assign shields to the right hand instead of left hand. If it’s on left hand, it’s L1 to guard/block. If it’s on the right hand, you can punch with the shields with R1 and sometimes do something else with R2. That’s why they all have attack values. Basically ignore that, you won’t be using the shield on the right hand, because you’re not crazy.
Tower shield has 100/60/90 protection, Knight’s Shield has 100/30/70. (Physical/Magic/Fire). Tower shield weighs much more (30 vs 5). It has more guard break reduction(70 vs 57).
- The Guard Break Reduction determines the amount of stamina expended to block an incoming attack.
- A higher Guard Break Reduction also allows you to block stronger attacks without breaking guard and reduces the amount of stamina depleted from blocking attacks.

The first time I played Dark Souls 1 I used to ask questions to a friend of my daughters in high school. He was ahead of me in the game and I probably drove him crazy. He would offer to help, to be available to be summoned but I wanted to do it myself.
These games are designed for community involvement. From summoning other players to checking on wiki for ideas. If Demon Souls is like other DS games there are things hidden in the game that you would be insanely lucky to discover on your own.

there was this mysterious knight above a bridge in Shrine of Storms 4-1 … I never figured out who he was until like 10 years later. By accident.

I noticed when I went to upgrade weapons that different options are sometimes available. So I found this chart and as always a bit confused. Mainly because I’ve got all these sharpstones from killing skeletons but I don’t get any sharp upgrades for weapons. Why is that? Do I need a different blacksmith besides the two I know? Or does the weapon need to already be upgraded before it’s available? Also, I can wield the compound long bow and am wondering what upgrade options I should take for that.

Depends on what shard and the +level of your weapon as weapons have to be a certain level before they can be upgraded using a certain type of shard, and +7 is the point of no return for all special shard types, but boss weapons require +8. IIRC You use the blacksmith in 2-1 for nearly all weapon upgrading.
In theory a +6 weapon should have all shard types available while +7 has none AKA you leveled your weapon too far and now are stuck on the normal path to +10.
The weapon upgrade system in Demon’s Souls is about as clear as mud. This is the thing From kept improving little by little over the course of each game.

Thanks. It’s a bizarre system. And it’s weird because my generic long sword which I’ve upgraded several times, if I switch to “quality” seems to get worse.
In the prison place, how do you break out of being paralyzed and suspended by those mystical blue things? I’ve died so many times because I can’t always get ranged attack on them.
You need to pay attention to what the upgrades do. Most are changing the stat scaling levels, so sharp makes a weapon scale more with dex, crushing more with Str etc. Quality levels out str/dex for more split stat builds.
Dragon adds fire damage, and some of the others add magic damage.

I LOVE the dragon sword I got. That thing is amazing! Now to find a dragon stone chunk so I can upgrade it!

Hah you can’t. They are fairly blind, deaf and squishy though. You should wait until their backs are turned and do enough damage to take them out before they attack.

Ok will give that a try. Thanks!

If you get up close you can walk around them they don’t turn and attack very quickly.
Problem with these assholes is they tend to lurk in narrow corridors and stairways, making it impossible to get behind them. They also have ungodly poise while they are casting a spell.
On my world, I cleared 4 bosses last night and they were all incredibly easy.
The first was some maggot golem dude. He doesn’t know how to turn quickly, so I stood behind him and hacked at his hamstrings with my sword. Fuck his entire level, though. Seriously, that swamp was incredibly frustrating. From insists on putting in a poison swamp level in every one of their games and I hate it. At least in Bloodborne it was small and optional.
The boss after that was some lady and her knight. Lots of messages told me to parry. Guy just stands there blocking a ramp and tries to crush you if you get too close. Parry worked great. I still died to him a couple times as I got the parry timing down but it wasn’t frustrating.
Then, I finished the Storm level. There’s a magic sword that shoots wind blades! Cool! I really like how the big boss fights in this game are puzzles. It’s fun to figure them out. I can see how on replays they’d be boring once you know the answer, though.
That wrapped all my other worlds so it was back to Boletaria and a castle romp followed by a fight with the Penetrator. He actually dodges my magic shots, and is fairly aggressive with huge reach. That was probably the hardest fight after Maneater I’ve had to do in this game. I foolishly pressed on as a human after killing him because two summon signs appeared and I had 2 summon friends. I died to the blue dragon on the bridge, now my world is no longer pure white. I also lost 100k souls. Oops.

Meet dumbass. Know what I did yesterday? I had 35,000 souls. Just a massive amount for me. I was on my way BACK to pick up my soul, so I could turn around and cash them in. My soul was in sight and I slipped off the side of a fucking cliff. I’d spent all afternoon completing 4-1 doing that.
I read that flamelurker needs to be killed to gain access to more options to upgrade weapons. How hard is he to kill?

If I wanted to take a Long Sword or Claymore and wanted to make it a crushing variant, if I had it up to level +7 and then switched, would I have wasted a whole bunch of upgrades? Like does it go all the way down to +1 Crushing? If so, does that mean you need to know what you’re going to do to weapons before upgrading them so you’re not wasting stones and money?
He is probably the 3rd hardest boss I’ve faced so far. He is susceptible to ranged attacks because sometimes he’ll stop to catch his breath or something and you can capitalize on that. He is aggressive and some of his attacks have a big AoE and are hard to dodge. Just not as hard to dodge as Maneater or Penetrator, in my opinion. He is a boss that will kill you quick with one poor dodge.
If you summon a helper he’s very easy. Whoever has aggro plays defense, and the other person hits him in the butt.
