I have the one by Moleskine, and as I’ve mentioned before it’s really awesome, and a good price.

For those who get pissed off at idiot fucking web designers that create inefficient webstores and then play keep-away with critical information (like prices) while they try to repeatedly ram useless pretty pictures down your throat, the covers are seventy fucking dollars for the K3s and $130 for dx covers.

i’m not too concerned about the weight, more so protection of the screen/unit when i put it in my backpack for my subway commute each day twice a day

Wow! Looks like my new toy has more capability than I knew. How do I figure out my email address for the kindle as you wrote it above? (finding Calibre now…)

It should be your amazon account name.

So, if my kindle email address is joe@kindle.com, the address I’d use above is joe@free.kindle.com?
Marcus

Yes that is how it worked for me.

Right. If you have a wifi-only kindle you don’t need to worry about the free part either, as they’ll never charge you no matter what.
Are you guys saying free for newspapers you subscribe to, or free for any newspapers they carry?

Got to play with a K3 on Friday. I own and adore a Sony PRS-505 but the K3 is unbelievable. Better screen, lighter, faster, and with the added technical wizardry of wifi and whispernet. I want :(

Got a kindle 3 for the wife – AMAZING screen, delightfully high-res and analog, a joy to read, like paper itself.
Terrible device for browsing the web, but is that a shock to anyone? Kicks ass at READING.
Can’t go wrong for $139.

For anyone who might be fussing over whether or not to purchase a case: Read for a couple of hours with the naked Kindle 3 and while I agree that the caseless reading experience is indeed noticeably better, when I switch back and forth it’s easy enough to adapt to the change without really noticing (or missing) the additional case weight. So for me, the extra weight is not really that big of a deal.

Sure, you can adapt, but if you think it’s better without the case, why would you want a case that stays on permanently (as opposed to a travel case, whose purpose is obvious)? Are you worried that you’ll drop it while you’re reading it?
There’s no way I’m putting mine in a case. It’s perfect as-is.

For my Kindle 2 I bought the type of case you need to take it out to read. It works great and the Kindle’s dimensions are perfect for holding as is.

It basically grabs any RSS feed, formats it for the kindle like a newspaper, and emails it to yourkindle@free.kindle.com. So you could grab the NYtimes Arts & Leisure section, gizmodo, the consumerist, etc, and automatically get it loaded on your kindle.

I’m not a big case fan either, but I worry about the screen getting scratched banging around in my wife’s handbag or whatever.
(she’s a case fan, anyway…)

Are you worried that you’ll drop it while you’re reading it?[/QUOTE]Of course I don’t feel that way, I was only making a foray into sans case usage scenarios, having used my Kindle exclusively with a case from the very beginning. I’m not really arguing one way or the other here, was just inspired to give it a try and describe my impressions. Edit: Short answer: Never tried caselessness and was pleasantly surprised by the experience, but not inspired to permanently ditch the case I already have.

On the question of screen contrast, I have to wonder if there are differences on the DX and stock screens, because comparing my wife’s (my old) Kindle 2 and my Kindle 3, the difference is pretty dramatic.
On the case issue, I have the lighted case for the K3. The light is awesome, and I find the “fold” on the left of the Kindle is the perfect grip. And by holding the case instead of the Kindle, you never accidentally press a page button…

Oh and regarding the question of permanency, the metal hooks in the K3 lighted case are actually very easy to remove, so now that I know I like it without I plan to dettach the K3 from the case whenever it’s convenient to do.
