That’s Popular Highlights. There’s an option to turn it off in the second page of Settings, I believe it also turns off if you turn off wireless. (Which you should have off for the sake of battery life anyway.)

I resisted a Kindle for a long time because I just love physical books and I never thought reading on an electronic device would be as enjoyable as holding a “real” book in my hands. I find myself now preferring to read on the Kindle. Only thing I can’t do now is read in the bathtub.

I’ve heard some people say they put the Kindle in some kind of plastic baggie for reading in the tub.

Yeah, I have used a gallon sized Ziploc bag with my DX, but not often. You can buy waterproof cases as well.

Are there any statistics on how quickly/often Amazon pursues requests for Kindle availability, especially relative to quantity of interest?

No, it’s on even when wireless is off (I assume it syncs when you have wireless turned on, or maybe even when you download the book).

My Kindle 2 just developed screen problems- the top half inch or so is a mess of black pixels & lines. It’s still covered under warranty, but has anyone had experience with Amazon’s return policy? Do they repair or replace? If they do replace, do I get to step up to a Kindle 3? What’s their turnaround time?

Question - if I and my son both get a Kindle 3 for Christmas this year, would it be best to have only one account for both kindle devices so any books I buy he gets a copy of as well, or does that not work?

That’s what my parents do so they can share books. There’s a limit to the number of kindles that can be registered to one person, I think it’s 5.

I had similar problems with my Kindle 3 a few weeks ago. I called customer service (1-866-321-8851) and explained the situation. They overnighted a new K3 to me immediately, along with a prepaid shipping label so I could return the defective one.

Amazon’s customer service is amazing. My new K2 scratches on the screen and they overnighted me one no questions asked.

Does anyone know: When a book is released in print on a certain day, what time that day does the Kindle edition become available (I’m on the west coast as an example, so I’m not sure if it’s midnight EST, or if everyone waits till morning or what). The Kindle edition is available for pre-order already, I just can’t seem to find when I’ll be able to download it if I pro-order a day early.

The last few books I pre-ordered downloaded in the early morning (the last one I ordered came in at 2:23a Central).

Kindle books don’t always come out the same day as the paper version - Game Change was delayed a month, for example.

The Mark Twain autobiography was actually released for Kindle download before the print version shipped out. I’m not sure if there’s any standard correlation between the two formats.

Out of curiosity, what’s the chance that the Kindle will be on sale during Amazon’s Black Friday week long deals? Does it usually stick at regular price or can I expect that, if I wait until next week, that I’ll be able to grab it cheaper? Too, has it ever gone “out of stock” leading up to Christmas?

It’s just that I’m not in a hurry to get one but I’m trying to balance the chances for a deal with the chance of being out of stock.
