Arcane Season 2 and beyond interview on the BBC with showrunner, co-creator and exec producer Richard Linke.
The early part of the interview (40" to 1’10") “spoils” the general tone of the end of the season without specifics. So stay away if that’s a concern
Talk of season 2 moved me to rewatch season 1. Still blows me away. One of the best seasons of tv watching I’ve seen. Love this show.
I watched the first episode this morning.
First of all, wow, movie quality animation in a TV show, that’s really impressive.
It was a strange pilot episode though. I felt like it didn’t really have a narrative hook for the audience. It introduces us to a pretty grim setting and two orphans who seem like a danger to themselves and to society. They should be in jail or an orphanage or under better supervision somehow. I’m not really interested in seeing more of their exploits. I hope they don’t get any innocent people hurt.
The animation is indeed spectacular.
The season is made of 3 mini arcs. Personally, I was still unsure about the characters after the first episode. But the storytelling is as good as the animation. If you decide to keep watching, I’m curious to find out whether you’ll feel more invested by the end of episode 3.
Yes, I agree, the show is really solid. Watched it recently for some work stuff and had to analyze it a bit. And it was surprising how well it held together.
Masterful in craft and very good at storytelling, with only some nitpicks here and there due to them having to present too much “lore” here and there, and the huge thematic faux pass at the very, very end I hope they can crawl out of (because otherwise it will get into very controversial waters).
But it is not just cool animation, it is a show with thematic ambitions that wants to explore quite heavy stuff, and goes deep into it for the genre. Almost felt like a (good) Gundam show without robots in how the thematic elements are played with explicitly through the characters embodiment of specific ideological positions.
Really worth watching even if you disagree with some of its takes.
So excited for s2. And that was an impressive trailer. They look to be keeping the same style even if it feels more action-y than s1’s buildup.
