Are you good enough at Twilight Struggle to enter a tournament?

Well played and I wish I understood what you just wrote

Back to back playing of those two cards allowed the USSR to suddenly get large positions in both of those scoring areas just before the scoring cards were due to come out.

Yup, what @Gruden said. They’re considered the two most powerful Early War cards for USSR. Having both early on is good fortune for the Russkies.

Ok game with @tcgamer started, he as USSR.

Cmon everyone…I"m itching to get demoralized again!

I’d like to report that at the start of Turn 6, the leader of the free world (tgb123) defeated the Godless Commie Empire led by Borges.

Actually it was a good game, with Borges taking a commanding lead (+10) early on, and while I was starting to make some headway in whittling it down thanks to heavy influence in Europe and the Americas, I had my doubts that I’d be able to take the lead by the end of the game.

Fortunately Borges slipped up and played Summit for the event while we were at Defcon 2, and I won the die roll, allowing me to fire off the first nukes and win.

Sounds like a great game. Thanks for the reports everyone. Keep them coming!

It was, and taking advantage of an obvious mistake felt like a cheap victory. But I’ll take it. :)

GAAAH! Pro tip: don’t play Your Twilight Struggle turn after a night of drinking. Good game tgb, and good luck!

Thanks. FWIW, if we’d been playing head-to-head I would have offered to let you take it back.

No worries, I’ve won my share of these games that way. Besides, the
Russians will get their revenge in Twilight Struggle: The 2016 Election
Edition.

Turn 1 AR1 and I fear I already made a big mistake. As US I headlined Red Scare because, duh. Took 3 influence in Italy, 4 Germany. Pretty normal.

Round 1 I play DeGaulle. I choose to do event first, then attempt to coup France. I roll a 3, 1 shy of what I needed. I had risked a 50/50 chance to kick Defcon to 4, and remove the influence. However it failed and now USSR has France. I should have gone for realignment.

Live and learn.

I tend to have more luck with coups than realignment.

Highlight of my game vs. Berbatov so far - Playing CIA (as USSR) at Defcon 2, and getting away with it :p
(any suggestion that it’s a bad thing not to control any Battleground states in Africa or the Americas is defeatism of the worst kind, and will not be tolerated!)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the 1 op mean that doing this means the US player can always win? Oh, right, no battlegrounds to coup. Lucky you!

No round 1 coup for USSR?

No, they hadn’t, and instead TC has been making a push for Asia, which I am doing what I can to deny. Red Scare has altered his choices I think.

I’ll have to check the log to see what was round 1 instead, because I can’t remember if Eastern European Unrest was round 1, or if it was Norad.

Whatever the case I was able to play Destalinization for mostly my benefit, as Poland and West Germany each had only 3 when I did, and the influence pull to Thailand I was able to coup from Soviet +1 to US +4 from it :D

Typically, the best way for USSR to compete for Asia in Turn 1 is to Coup Iran, thus denying the US the ability to place influence in Pakistan and India. Plus, Iran and Iraq for whenever the Middle East Scores. In terms of payoff, there really isn’t another target our there of similar attractiveness. If nothing else, the Soviets can use the China Card to get OK odds at that access payoff. Italy if weakened by Socialist Governments can be tempting, but why go for one battle ground when you can go for 2?

Also, you probably should have just placed the Influence back into France. That makes it 3/1, so Soviets need 5 ops to take control. Which is a lot, especially when purged, and if Truman is unaccounted for, the USSR could lose a lot more. At that point, all you are giving up is access to Algeria, which is a future problem, not a now problem. Or, better yet, move right on into Pakistan and worry about De Gaulle later.

Then sometimes fate throws you a bone. Play Fidel, go for realignment. Realign 3 out of Cuba, then for kicks try Iraq. Kick the USSR out of Iraq too.

Dice, man.
