Are you good enough at Twilight Struggle to enter a tournament?

I love games that go all the way to the end and then end so tight!

@Berbatov and @rho21 – thanks for replaying that game. Since you are both near the top there is a chance that game will matter so having a clear result is much better in my mind than having a game time out.

Speaking of results, as of the end of round 4, @Brian_Reynolds is the only undefeated player in the tournament. Brian is matched with Berbatov for round 5. If Brian wins, he will be the clear winner of the tournament. If Brian loses then we will have five players tied for 4-1. In the latter case we’ll do a quick single elimination championship round, seeding the 4-1 players by the Challonge scoreboard at the bottom. (I believe Challonge uses the Median-Buchholz system to break the tie).

@TwilightStruggleTournament particpants-- the final result for round 4 has been entered.

Round 5 has been automatically seeded and you can check for your opponent in the Challonge bracket:

Please finish Round 4 by April 30 at the latest.

***Important Requests:***

  1. Please let me know when the game is underway so I know that I don’t need to follow up and make sure you are aware
  2. When you report an official result, please bold the result so that I can track it more easily in the rest of the thread

Challenge issued to @CraigM!

Indeed, the link @SadleyBradley posted worked.

Challenge promptly issued to @tgb123!

The gauntlet has been thrown to @Otthegreat!

I’d like to shoutout @rho21 both for the sportsmanship of the replay (I was travelling on the one weekend we had, and the time difference made things impossible) and for a great game.

From my perspective, I was up against the wall exiting the Early War; the Bear Trap (incredibly fortunate not only in its duration but in the cards it forced rho to discard) put the game back up for grabs. The essential outline of the game was me controlling SA+Africa (with a draw in Europe) and losing moderately-to-badly across the rest of the board.

It was a nailbiter, with a decent element of luck deciding the day. A 50/50 T10 Brush War that went my way would have flipped the game had it failed, and a spur-of-the-moment decision to play a scoring card before Alliance For Progress meant I held the 3op card I needed to avoid discarding to avoid losing South America to LADC. One of the most memorable TS games I’ve played.

Thanks again for the game rho.

Game with CraigM has started!

Left-Empty (USA) defeats tgb (USSR) in the last round of Turn 4.

We were having a great game, too. I stupidly made the same mistake for the second time in this tourney - holding on to CIA Created until I had no choice but to play it at Defcon 2.

You’d think I’d learn from my mistakes.

To elaborate, we started the game with both hilariously unfavorable hands, holding mostly events from the other side. Our headlines (me playing blockade for him, him playing a blank Asia) would have clued anyone about the state of decay of our ambitions! But I think such hands in the early game favour the US player - having control of the timing of all the major USSR events is really powerful, if a bit discouraging at times.
Tgb’s USSR secured the Middle East quickly, with me doing the minimum service to assure an US presence. I miscounted the rounds of the first turn (an usual mistake of mine), and ended up having to play De Gaulle for the event as my last action, investing all of its influence trying to counter it. This could have gone very badly for me, if not for a miracle: I drew Truman, whom I headlined on round 2, thus securing firmly Europe. But tgb totally neutralized any scoring velleity on my part, by sacrificing his mandatory coup to pull a “socialist government+Europe scoring” combo.
Things then got very hot in Asia. Tgb was again, quite unlucky: I drew 2 times in a row Destal and managed to hold Decol to turn 3. I used a very op favoured hand on turn 3 to tie, then turn around Asia through the Koreas.
Turn 4 began poorly for me, with tgb playing me as I masterfully cancelled the extra points I had invested in Africa with my Defectors. Tgb was the first to set foot in South America, and I would have had a very hard time getting in, if not for, again, a lucky draw of Junta on my Grain Sales… And then the world ended, suddenly, with CIA meddling in Cuba.

It was a very interesting game: we both were trying to settle almost peacefully in our regions, but when we occasionnaly went for the offensive, we got the job done, hard and quick!

I´ve sent the invitation to habaku a long time ago… but no answer so far…

Same with my invitation to @Otthegreat.

Grunden, unfortunately Ottthegreat has dropped out of the tournament.

So this round a bye for me then?

Invite sent to buzznaut.

@rho21

I believe we are matched up. Feel free to send me an invite, greatatlantic same as here.

Sorry, I’ve been busy for a couple of days. I’ll send you an invitation now.

infested_terran vs chappers: win for infested_terran via DEFCON

@tcgamer I’d like to start on Monday, as I’ll be away all weekend. Thanks.
