UBISOFT ANNOUNCES DARK MESSIAH™ OF MIGHT & MAGIC®

New Might & Magic® game to be powered by Source™ Engine from Valve

SAN FRANCISCO – AUGUST 4, 2005 – Today Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, announces the development of Dark Messiah™ of Might & Magic®, a new first-person action game for the PC, powered by an enhanced version of the Source™ Engine, the award-winning game technology Valve created to power Half-Life®2.

Developed by Arkane Studios, the team behind the critically acclaimed Arx Fatalis game, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic puts players in a first-person perspective, allowing them to immerse themselves in the legendary Might and Magic universe as never before. It is also the world’s first fantasy action game to feature a complete first-person combat system. It takes full advantage of the Source™ Engine’s exceptional technological enhancements in areas such as character animation, advanced AI, real-world physics and shader-based rendering.

Ubisoft acquired the Might and Magic brand in 2003, and Dark Messiah of Might & Magic is the second title Ubisoft will be launching as it restores this famed franchise to glory. Dark Messiah of Might & Magic is scheduled for a summer 2006 release and will be shown for the first time at the Games Convention in Germany on August 17, 2005.

Did Arkane shelve Arx Fatalis II?

Sounds like they just rebranded it.

Arx fatalis was a great atmospheric first person RPG much like ultima underworld.

“DARK MESSIAH™ OF MIGHT & MAGIC®” is fucking hexen.

Damn, I was looking forward to Arx 2.

“DARK MESSIAH™ OF MIGHT & MAGIC®” is fucking hexen.

Anything to back that up, or just more unfocused ranting?

I have very fond memories of the might and magic series, never having played the last one. So count me in as one hoping that this is good.

I was kind of hoping UBI would of made a Might & Magic rpg.

Remember when we used to jokingly append “of Might and Magic” to random game titles? Looks like Ubisoft thought we were being serious.

It’s a first person action game. It isn’t a RPG. The word RPG isn’t used anywhere. It’s fucking hexen.

“DARK MESSIAH™ OF MIGHT & MAGIC®” is fucking hexen.

I’m ready for another Hexen.

Hit me, fools!

But are you ready for another Crusaders of Might & Magic???

No one is.

How many time can a franchise be kicked in the nuts and keep going?

The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, the answer is blowing in the wind.

So anyway there are now some screenshots

and a gameplay movie:

(warning: apparently said movie includes Gabe Newell in it talking about source, which might put some people off… ).

Graphics seem decent enough although everything is going to suffer in the comparison to Oblivion.

Someone let me know else the video shows thanks.

Is this an RPG-Lite type FPS?

Gotta love the reasons they give to subscribing to their premium download service

Classy move, fellas.

Also, from the video… yeah it’s hexen.

Just from the little gamplay I saw in that short movie (glad to see gabe didn’t have to read from a script or anything… ) I’m quite impressed.

Valve seems to be really behind this title for some reason. (it isn’t like its the only source title) It was under steam news.

Valve seems to be really behind this title for some reason.

As far as I’ve heard it, the story is like: some people at Valve really dug Arx Fatalis and it was them to approach Arkane Studios to talk about a Source engine licensing deal.

Well that’s definitely a rebranding (look at the goblins, orcs, spiders), and looks tops. The only thing saying its not an rpg is some press release waffle, so hopefully that’s all it is, and we get Arx2 under a different name.

I suppose that video was for a publisher or someone like that.
