I will give this new arrowhead thingy a good year before even considering it. The state of ArmA2 at release taught me that lesson at least. That said, with the latest beta patch and the enemy precision turned down a bit I think it’s finally both playable and enjoyable. I was beginning to think those to elements were mutually exclusive.
I have the hope (self delusion here?) in this game, being almost an expansion and not a true new game, won’t be as buggy at release as Arma 2.
Will report in July if i was right or wrong. :P
I hadn’t seen this one before:
UAV operation and laser painting!
FAC was in the first game. Very satisfying directing a human pilot to take out targets.
Jeez. Videos with ads. Can I have my old internet back please.
I would post the link of the same video in Youtube… but you know, YT also have ads already. :P
I can’t believe this is coming out on my birthday, June 29 (N’Gai’s too, I guess). Best year ever.

I’ve been thinking the exact same thing. They released another beta patch two days ago, I think I’ll give it a go.

I thought arrowhead was more of a standalone than an expansion. I’d be down with an expansion, less down with a standalone.

It’s an expandalone (thanks RPS!). From the press release:
• Ultimate War Simulation Experience: Fully integrates with the original ARMA 2 for unmatched warfare simulation.
So it’s standalone in that you don’t need ArmA 2 to run it, but you can presumably access all of ArmA 2’s content in OA if you have both. Bear in mind I’m assuming that based off the above quote but I don’t see how it could mean anything else.

Interesting, I thought I read quotes stating some stuff wouldn’t work right in the expansion because of new render paths. ie. all of Chenarus’s vegetation.
I read quotes stating some things won’t work exactly at 100%, like the FLIR applied to old models, they will use a generic system instead of a detailed heat based system. But nothing like “all the Chernarus’s vegetation won’t work!”.

OH, I think I remember how they said… that the increase in performance would not be backwards compatible with the the base game because they use different render paths, LODS, and textures. ie. the base game will not inherit the new trees, grass, flowers, bushes etc.
So that makes perfect sense what you said and makes it even more exciting. I almost don’t want to play until it comes out now. Do you recall if the new vehicles/units woudl be available when creating new scenarios in the base game?
I think it means the new game will bring new, more optimized vegetation, but of course Chernarus will still use the old vegeation model/textures/lods. But still it will work.
I think OA will admit Arma 2 stuff, not the other way around (though fans perhaps will fix that easily). Of course, if you are going to buy OA, you can start OA and load up Chernarus, then put vehicles/units from the two games.

didn’t know plants were such a popular feature! after playing Just Cause 2… the vegetation rocks in that game. and such a huge world as well!

I played my first bit of multiplayer the other night. First off, I have to get a new computer if I’m going to be effective. You just don’t see enough on a 1280*1024 screen, and I can barely run that on my P4 3.4 rig anyway. Hopefully I’ll be getting one after my exams. As for the actual game though, I don’t think I hit a single thing. The first few shots I sent, I spotted two guys creeping towards a compound. I let loose at them, only then did I see the Humvee supporting them and realised they were the other squad on my team. Thankfully I didn’t alert my squad to their presence over Teamspeak. Then I engaged the right target, i.e. the people shooting at my initial “contact.”
The next engagement was over in seconds, with me dying. I forget to look up. Two shots, and I’m on the ground.
Good fun. Although I wouldn’t see myself muscling through the campaign. Much too slow unless I know I’m participating in a team.
on the ArmA2 forums there’s a whole slew of usermade single player content. you might want to check that out.
Also, play a little with the editor. One squad of blues, one squad of reds. A waypoint for the reds. Voila, sandboxy combat arma2 style ;-)

Yeah, i am going to agree with you. You need a more powerful computer for Arma 2.

Aye, I have everything turned down low. The people not in my squad look like sprites. I was going to wait until after my exams, when I got my new computer, but I’m impulsive and wanted to shoot things.
Also, I’m not sure if I’m right about it being a P4, it’s a P4D, which I think is different as it’s dual core.
