Why do I keep getting the feeling my children are older than you?

I don’t really agree that there is political funding behind the shooters OR movies, but games like CoD: MW 1 and 2 definitely have a political ideology behind them. The same is true of movies like Transformers that have the US military allowing use of military hardware. The later, however, requires huge amounts of money to rent the equipment.

The original O:FP was dedicated to, if I recall correctly, victims of communism. Again, a political ideology behind the game, but not political funding. Military funding, however, is distinctly political, and BIS and, as another example, Panther Games both get money from different military forces.

America’s Army is probably the only politically funded game I can think of.

If we broaden the scope of political to things like interest groups and corporate marketing there’s certainly plenty of examples on gaming (like BP in SimCity Societies) however that opens a whole can of retarded conspiratorial worms about whether Stardock is out to take down the government or not. I’m still trying to think of a government funded film that anyone actually gave a damn about. Closest I can think of is some obscure and controversial NEA supported art flick that gets the religious right in a froth.

Well i’m sorry for the thread jack, which was based on my mistake that this thread was about the game America’s Army. I think the subject matter quite interesting, especially on the back of the last decade of western foreign policy, and of course the ‘war on terror’ etc.

@ datter, i found your response to the possibility slightly amusing, so i apologise for the rise i got out of you. Indeed, if you have children, you are probably well versed in the era of ‘reds in the bed’ etc, so actually you must have a clue what i’m talking about, but choose to take the defensive approach…which means one thing in my mind so i will stop trying to engage you in this thread about this. You might well be the product of that indoctrination yourself ;)

So! How’s this Austria’s Army game coming along?

Don’t start!

It’s totally Argentina’s Army, if we had one.

Zak, to be clear. Your theory is that the US government is secretly backing the popular CoD & Halo series, while their own publicly backed America’s Army languishes? That this devilishly secret group is masterminding the popularity in shooters, that popularity would not exist if it were not for these secret puppet masters?

You sir, should start a newletter. I came here for ArmA 2 news, but your theories are much more interesting. Don’t let the likes of caesarbear dissuade you from posting more of those theories.

Go ahead and laugh, chet. I heard Team Fortress 2 is sponsored by the CIA.

just to be clear i’m not saying the usa(or other) government is behind all modern war based fps games. What i am saying is maybe ‘propaganda’ is behind the rash of all these releases. Not all such games obtain the level of success of CoD etc, but that sure doesn’t stop the tide of such releases.

I don’t know who or what is behind it all, but probably it has it’s own evil bat cave to work from. I think we need to all be more aware of this potential evil in our midst, think of the children.

So you never said what you said, but you are still saying it. Awesome.

Wrong. I shouldn’t say this, but it is all backed by the fashion industry spearheaded by Dolce and Gabbana. It will all make sense soon…

Dolce and Gabbana? If they are hat fashion designers, it makes sense…

Don’t be sorry, you’ve breathed new life into a stale old thread.

Frank Capra’s WW2 propaganda movies are AWESOME. Why We Fight. Check 'em out.

That’s exactly what “they” want us to think!

J’ACCUSE!!!

Effeminate Sailor can’t believe how much he loves his new hat!

Does this game get much better? I bought it with a friend with the intention of playing the campaigns coop with him. The game is a serious system hog, I have to turn it down to normal graphics (with a high end rig) just to keep fps managable when something actually happens. But what is even worse is even though I have a ping of 26 it can lag pretty fierce, and it can take 3 seconds for a hit on a bad guy to register.

I started playing harvest red with him, and the intro/training thing was just abysmal. It took a ton of guesswork to even figure out how to get to the part of the ship to train (had to glitch jump our way through pallets), and the first mission did not fare much better. Last but not least, the game hangs alot.

In sum, does the game get better? Because I really want to like it, but it seems to be trying its best to make me regret getting it. Any suggestions/recommendations?

The game is a hog, but patching has alleviated some of that and other games have surpassed it’s hog level. Be a hardcore PC gamer are start fiddling with those settings. I’d recommend turning off filtering, anti-aliasing and shadows if you don’t have the newest gen CPU as ArmA’s more CPU heavy than GPU.

I haven’t had too many network issues certainly not the lag you describe. Need more info on your hardware and such to help you diagnose that.

IMO, the Harvest Red campaign is good at setting the tone for what ArmA is/can be when playing singleplayer, an open environment. Co-op, you’ll want to get to the action sooner. Fire up a new server with the mission wizard if you’re just starting or download something from Armaholic that’s co-op and has no requirements. You didn’t mention if you had Operation Arrowhead/Combined Arms. If so, try the scenario One Shot One Kill on Takistan. It’s a straight forward sniper mission for two and shows off a cool weapon and is winnable even if newbies take what will likely be many shots to get that one kill.

What is you system specs? What was your graphic settings? The same with your friend, as you were playing in coop.
Multiplayer in dedicated severs (or in local but not the Harvest Red campaign, which is indeed an hog) should be smoother.
Have you tried the campaign in single player to see if it’s better?
About the ship, i remember you had to speak with someone and do certain task in order to advance…
