Misguided:

I know it’s just an analogy, but I don’t quite agree. A host sets the tone for a party. They choose whom to invite.

The analogy died when Tom stopped vetting accounts. He used to, at the very least, activate accounts instead of automatic registration. Used to be someone at the party called and said “Dude, come over here, it’s great”, and the host said “Sure, come on in” at the door.

The door’s been hanging wide open since 2007. The cats escaped and went feral years ago, someone posted an open invite on Craigslist. I’m pretty sure somebody took a dump in the toilet tank and stole the berets while Tom was out on the back patio.
