Avengers 2: Age of Ultron

Looks like they’re saving Thanos for the third film. At Comicon today, Joss Whedon announced that Avengers 2 will be called Age of Ultron. I figured they’d use Ultron sooner or later, since he’s one of the biggest members of their rogues gallery.

One thing to keep in mind is that there will almost certainly be some Thanos presence in Guardians of the Galaxy. Probably not the main villain but he’ll be in the background.

Yay, Ultron!

Too bad there’s no sign of Hank Pym. I imagine he’ll end up as a Tony Stark creation.

Verrrrry cool.

I would have preferred “The Avengers: Age of Adz”

With New York being smashed by a bunch of monsters/aliens magically come to life from a bunch of Prophet Royal Robertson’s paintings.

Hm. Ultron was THE Avenger villain when I was growing up. He’s also crazy tied-in to a lot of the members. He re-imagined the Vision, was built by Hank Pym, copied the brainwaves of Mrs. Pym (The Wasp) to give sentience to his “Bride of Ultron.” He even possessed Tony Stark’s armor to make an avatar for himself at one point. And his big weakness was the scarlet witch and her (admittedly convenient) anti-probability power.

Out of all those people, only Tony Stark has been mentioned so far. Whedon did a good job making Avengers entertaining, so I suspect this will be too. but I also suspect we’re going to see it be more like the modern Trek movies…fun, but really not Trek in the fabric.

Yeah, the proposed Ant Man movie will come out too late for him to be Ultron’s creator, so I think your Stark guess is a good one. The other likely possibility would be “SHIELD project gone horribly wrong”.

They could easily use the second Avengers movie as the introduction for Hank Pym. That would be messing with his established timeline a bit but it wouldn’t be crazy to see Hank Pym create Ultron by accident (possibly by working with Tony Stark and then Ultron taking over and altering one of the Iron Man suits, as he actually does in the comics) and then work with the Avengers to stop it? Hank Pym might even get some minor cameos in the new Thor, Captain America or Guardians of the Galaxy movie, like happened with Hawkeye – Hawkeye appeared briefly in the first Thor movie then had a huge part in the Avengers movie. I could see them doing that quite easily with Hank Pym in order to setup the Ant-Man movie.

He’ll probably start as a SHIELD scientist, regardless.

I’m going to go with a Stark origin for Ultron. The suits got as close to being autonomous robots as they could in the last Iron Man movie, so why not? Maybe Pym’s presence will have a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo, like Cap’s shield in Iron Man. Tony will want to make Jeeves more capable and use next-level programming from Pym. His name will just flash by on the screen or something.

Jarvis.

You know … an Iron Man movie with Bertie Wooster (played by Hugh Laurie) wearing the suit would be fantastic.

Maybe an ask.com tie-in.

Avengers 2: Age of Ask.com

Still waiting to see if Thor’s brother Loki is going to be the central character in this one, and what fancy hat will he wear.

I think joss already said Loki wasn’t going to feature in Avengers 2

Loki fans should get a good dose of him in the next Thor movie.

Loki is a great character portrayed by a great actor, but after Dark World I can see his run being done. There are a lot of villains to mull over …Ultron being a decent one.

I wonder if they will do the “eradicate humanity to preserve it” angle.

James Spader has been cast as Ultron, though he won’t be quite like the comic version:

Written and directed by Joss Whedon, “The Avengers: Age of Ultron” will show a more humanized – but just as fearsome – villain, Whedon told Entertainment Weekly.

In the Marvel universe, Ultron is a sentient robot that has an incredibly wide range of abilities, coming equipped with super-speed, super-strength, flight, mind control and a coma ray, to name a few. Whedon’s Ultron won’t be quite as versatile, and the filmmaker is imagining a less robotic bad guy.

“I knew right away what I wanted to do with him,” Whedon, as an admitted fan of Ultron’s, has said. “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers … he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone (a new character, Scarlet Witch) who’s a witch.”

James Spader as Ultron. Man, I am just not seeing it. I mean, I’m open to the possibility and I figure Whedon knows what he’s doing, it’s just - I’m trying to picture this in my mind’s eye and I got nothing.

He will be awesome!
