Despite how that sounds, I don’t mean that in an insulting way. He may not have been directing it toward anyone in particular as a racial slur, but the word is SO loaded he should have known better without being warned. And when he used the c-word, he was pretty much asking to be banned.

He used it in the context of a racist cop attacking him (presumably he’s black). Are we so frightened of words that he deserves to be banned for that?

Not really my point. The fact that he’d been warned before means the ban is basically fine, but jerri’s post is pathetic. Not One Of Us lost his rag at a spectacularly dense post that he felt personally insulted by, and used THE MAGIC WORD referencing himself. Context is pretty important.

If, for example, Ned got angry at one of the homophobes on the board and posted about a hypothetical situation where he got called a “faggot”, would you want Ned to be banned for that? Of course not.

Again, I’ll repeat it (because I know people will ignore it) - if he was already on a warning then fine. The problem is jerri’s blanket refusal to even consider context.

For context, it was in response to a braindead comment about Rosa Parks. NOOU took it to heart. He was abusive and as he was on a warning, that was probably enough.

I take issue with the idea that you cannot use an offensive word even if you are using it as a quote, in context, aimed at yourself. There aren’t many times when the “n-word” can be used without it being offensive. This strikes me as one of them.

I have used the N word more than once in P&R but never like that. I am not currently on a warning but who knows. I think Not One of Us went overboard.

Tom’s entitled to ban whoever he wants. On the face of it, I personally would’ve given NOOU the benefit of the doubt and had a word in private, but judging from what other people have said he’s already been given the benefit of the doubt. It’s not Tom’s job to babysit people - I just have a great deal of sympathy for NOOU in this situation.

My problem is jerri’s post regarding the “n-word”. According to her, it should never under any circumstances be used, because it’s just too awful.

Even by a black man making a hypothetical and using the word to reference himself.

(NOOU is black, right? I’m kinda assuming here.)

I think actually it’s more because he used the C word, after being previously banned for using it. The N just happened to be adjacent to it.

Haha! Yes, let’s agree that everyone now needs professional credentials to post opinions about things. On the internet. What will be your area of expertise?

Anyway, the Qt3 mom brigade (+ nlanza and WarrenM) who love the ban thread more than any other can rejoice about NoWayJose being banned again. Presumably for the post suggesting jerri blank be deputized? Who knows. Now you can uninstall your extra plug-ins that protected you.

Breathe that troll-free air. I feel the conversation improving already.
