I don’t know how you guys figure ElGuapo got banned. He didn’t. I’m not aware of anything he’s ever done to even make you guys think he could get banned. Cory, I know you don’t like the way the forum is run, so maybe it’s time for you to bail again as another show of solidarity with the fallen, or whatever gesture you feel you need to make. Because your insistence on coy little banning announcements, especially when they go off half-cocked, is getting tedious.

And as for whatever’s going on in that Internet dating thread, I’ve never even been in that thing. I’m assuming it’s pretty icky in there.

I suppose I’m hopelessly out of touch with the times or something, and being an ass is now the new black. I tend to really appreciate the fact that Tom tries to draw some boundaries around that, though. I also appreciate the fact that, as near as I can tell, even if those boundaries aren’t 100% equivalent, they still apply to everyone: Anybody can step far enough over them to deserve a banninating, at least for a little while.

Yeah. There is always that kind of message board poster who seems to be there to conscientiously practice rude behavior, excusing bad behavior by thinking, “hey, if I can be witty or somehow clever when I’m being an ass, it’s okay, even good, to do so.” My response to these people nowadays is usually just to ignore them (by hitting the “ignore poster” button in a handful of very rare cases).

When you have one poster doing this, it usually doesn’t continue. When you have a group of posters who are supporting each other in their efforts of being jerkoffs, things change. To some extent this kind of thing can be a way that a board polices itself, but it can also become a kind of mob rule, where ideas and perspectives on individual posters take on a life of their own, and if you’re outside of the clique, you’ll never feel welcome on the message board while they conscientiously gang up on you.

Having been on many boards for two decades now, I’ve been on both sides of this treatment in various places. And at this point, it’s really obvious where the line is to me. And Tom has been very, very restrained with the “ban” button around here. I haven’t seen anyone get the axe who didn’t clearly deserve it.

Which is why a lot of the “Hey, what did THAT guy do wrong?” chat befuddles me. I mean, do you people really not understand how you’re supposed to treat others? Is respect for others really so difficult to understand?

Yeah, that was a real bonehead move. The thing is I don’t use that email very often (I use the one I signed up with here so infrequently Yahoo deactivated it) so I didn’t think to check it. I just assumed it would change it in the background without requiring validation. Weird trick vBulletin does, that.

Why wait for him to do it? Just get a circle of folks together, have them change their e-mail (perhaps as they go on vacation) and wait for the supposition and innuendo to swirl. It’s like a new and fresh take on that whole werewolf game motif!
