Tom can ban IP addresses though, I think. Provided of course people have the same IP address. To be honest, I don’t know enough about how this stuff works (and more to the point, my IP address always changes).

But I think the ban-proofing mechanism will be a bridge to cross when it happens. Not much point sweating over the future of the boards. It isn’t like they’ve suddenly imploded. Though it would be nice for the “Elemental all purpose” thread to die at some point. That thread is just friggin toxic.

You think wrong. Actually you can’t effectively ban an IP. When banning a sequence you risk the banning of not banned people. Also all an admin is able to see is your IP; by rerouting your connection through a proxy he/ she won’t be able to identify you as a formerly banned person.

Also: I thought the vetting system was a pretty perfect wall against trolls and spammers. Even more so when an email was required.

Maybe this change of rules had something to do with reduced traffic or reduction of active members?
