This tempts me for some reason.

Amazon has price matched Newegg on the Logitech G9x ($49.99) and G500 ($39.99) mice.

My gear from Egg just arrived, free 3 day shipping arrived in 1 day, Winning!

I read some complaints on Amazon that the G9x middle mouse button (scroll wheel) requires so much force to press down that it’s almost unusable. If you would be so kind, lordkosc, could you either confirm or deny those reports after you have a chance to use your G9x?

You got a G500 and a G9x? One for the left hand and one for the right? :)

It’s not useable because it shifts slightly unless you press it down exactly. It’s not a positive feeling, especially when holding it down.

I usually just rebind to a thumb button or try to ignore whatever function was programmed to middle mouse, if possible.

wasn’t sure which I wanted, so I’ll just use the one I don’t like as much for my laptop.

touchpad no more!

g9x testing in 10 min.

I always forget about those thumb buttons. I have a G500 and have never found it to be as comfortable as I wish it was, though I’ve had the mouse for years and it’s performed well throughout that time. I’d like to get that sort of quality in a mouse that’s more comfy in my hand, hence my desire to try a G9x. Now that you’ve reminded me about the other buttons I can cease worrying about whether the scroll wheel button is a dud. Thank you, sir.

I’m not thrilled with the comfort on this one either. I don’t like the squared sides on the smaller grip, but I need that one for the way I hold the mouse. I’d rather have a pretty bog standard sized mouse with good DPI, but I didn’t find one exactly like that the last time I looked. Maybe Razer.

But it doesn’t hurt to try. It’s worth throwing a little money at the controller you use for every game.

I have not had the middle mouse button experience with my G9; works just fine. The second thumb button’s not reachable though. First one’s great for melee, to which it invariably gets assigned in any game with such.

I’ve had the G9x for a long time. I’ve grown to prefer the shape compared to the standard G500 type body. The mousewheel is a bit difficult to press down, so I also remap keys to thumb buttons. OTOH, I’ve never liked middle click with a mousewheel in games, so I don’t know how much worse the G9x is than other mice.

After about a year’s use, I’d still say it’s the best mouse I’ve owned.

What’s the middle mouse button like on the G500? I like a silent click but a lot of mice are clicking these days which is terrible for apps like 3DS Max where you click it all the time.

Ok so the G9X , the middle mouse wheel uses maybe 2x the pressure it takes to push down the left or right click, nothing unreasonable.

My thumb rests on the 2nd side button , so I have to actually bend it back to reach the first. :p

Very pleased with this mouse, I’ll give the G500 a test later today.

Maybe we should be posting in the hardware thread? :p

It’s quiet and reliable. I’ve never had any problem with my G500’s middle mouse button. The scroll wheel itself is also very quiet.

As long as the mouse is on a stable surface, I don’t have any issues with the extra force required to press down the scroll wheel. When I put it on a surface that flexes under the pressure, like the moveable mouse platform over my number pad, it can be problematic as the platform hits the number keys before the middle button press registers. Also, it seems like my middle mouse button has broken in a fair amount since I got it and is much easier to press now.

On a side note, I didn’t really like the shape of either of the grips included with the G9x and was going to return it, but as it turns out, the bare mouse without either grip fits my hand better than any mouse I have ever used. I don’t think it was designed to be used this way, but it works for me.

There is an old mouse thread in Hardware that is pretty useful. I think there is also a QT3er who blogged on mice in the past.

Edit: I bumped the old thread up in Hardware.

Oh this will not end well for me. I have no interest in Cities in Motion, but there is quite a bit of the rest of the Paradox catalog that could tempt me. I’ve been waiting for an under $10 sale on everything East India Company for example.

$15.95 for “AssBro” over on D2D: http://www.direct2drive.com/10024/product/Buy-Assassin’s-Creed:-Brotherhood-Download (caveat: US, Canada and Mexico only)

Since I just picked up Dead Island I think I’ll wait for the Winter Steam Sale on this one.

FWIW, a while back I saw the EIC collection for $8 over at Half Price Books (if you have any in your neck of the woods).
