And they’ve all got a castle each, they’re up to HERE with fucking castles…they long for a bungalow or something…

Amazon also has the 360 version of Deus Ex for just 35.99. That’s only a few dollars more than the PC download. Can anyone comment on the different platforms for this game? I think I’d prefer the 360 version, so my wife can watch me play. But I don’t want to get it if it is gimped in some way.

Damn, that’s tempting. However, based on the PC SR2 port (yes I know it wasn’t in-house) I just can’t risk it until I hear solid reviews :/

When you buy a steam works title from Amazon, do you get the game key immediately or do you have to download and install the game from Amazon before you put it on Steam? Although, I really should wait. Skyrim is coming out soon and I am sure Deus Ex 3 will be on sale for the Steam Christmas sale.

You get the key once the charge goes through. So for something like BF3 or Saint’s Row 3, pre-orders, you’ll get the key the day the game is available and the money charged, which you can then plug right into Steam (or Origin) no downloading necessary (this does prevent preloads with those services, however).
It’s gimped by the controller. Deus Ex 3 is one of those games I wouldn’t want to play without keyboard + mouse.
Do you feel that way about all FPSs, Gus, or is there something about Deus Ex that makes a keyboard helpful?
It’s the mouse, not the keyboard that’s important. I’ve played several games on both platforms - BioShock, Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Borderlands - and while they are viable with joystick aiming, mouse aiming is night-and-day faster and more accurate.
Fast, precision pointing can make a big difference in minigames as well. The hacking minigame in Deus Ex 3 is very different when you can quickly select nodes and initiate simultaneous Capture or Fortify commands. I saw a huge difference in the “pipes” hacking minigame in BioShock, and from what people have said about hacking in Deus Ex 3 on the 360, the time required to select a node with a joystick is significant.
C’mon Ned…
Steam has the “Delta Force Platinum Pack” for about $7.
This seems to include Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and its expansion. I might get it because I always like the few Delta Force games I played.
Hell, I often felt encumbered by the mouse, even - I can’t imagine fumbling it with a joystick.

At least it’s not a Wiimote.
I’ve played FO3 and Borderlands on both as well, and I didn’t have any problems with the gamepad versions. I realize mouse aiming is faster and more accurate, but usually the console versions compensate for that somehow (I guess with autoaim, but I don’t really notice it). In any case, it doesn’t bother me. I was curious about whether the versions are actually different somehow, not a general point about gamepads vs. mouse control.
Good to know about the mini-game though. That could make a difference, if the console version isn’t changed in some way to allow it to work as well as the mouse version.
I’ve played Bioshock, Fallout 3 and Mass Effect with both control schemes as well. I don’t really have a preference one way or another except in Fallout 3, where I thought the gamepad was much better than mouse and keyboard. (Because Fallout 3 is full of narrow corridors in which it’s easier to navigate slowly with a gamepad than have only 8 directions to move in using WASD, it’s just nicer and cleaner movement in tight corridors with the gamepad).
The news about the mini-game does give me pause though. You’d think they’d compensate for the lack of precision with the gamepad in some other way.
Don’t do it. Delta Force was low-rent Battlefield xxxx before there was a Battlefield – zero value singleplayer, and I don’t imagine the Novalogic servers are all that populated these days.
I’ve played through Human Revolution with a gamepad and didn’t have any trouble whatsoever in the hacking minigame. I really don’t know what people are talking about there. Didn’t feel gimped in any other way either.
J&R is having its Fall Games Blowout featuring two PC games for $7.
That’s what I needed to know. Thank you very much!
Some people (and I have no idea if Gus is one of these, and even if he is, this isn’t meant as a slight) believe that all console games are gimped because they use controllers instead of a mouse. I disagree with that, so I need the opinion of someone who doesn’t feel this way.
Did you realize you can hack more than one node at once? I think that’s where I would miss the mouse.
