It was one of the daily deals yesterday. All the cool kids tell me the stick sucks, but I’ll take it for $35 with a game included.
Steam Daily Deal for August 30 is The Polynomial for $2.50 (75% off). The Polynomial “is a 3D spaceflight music game with abstract, mathematically generated scenery and models which are set to the music of your choice.”
Of course I snagged it. What a confusing mess.
Why are those guys red? Oh, I’m supposed to shoot 'em. Why are those guys blue? Fuck if I know, but I can shoot them too. What do those things do? Wormholes, ah, takes me to a new place to…do it all over again. Why am I flying so slow, but fly a bit faster in this current thingy? No clue.
Yeah, what a mess.
They’ve also got Hunted for $10 too. Hmm, buy now or wait for inevitable Steam sale? Decisions, decisions…

Just think of it as a glorified, interactive visualizer. The gameplay itself is highly sparse, to be generous. The visuals, though, can be impressive.
“Sparse” is INSANELY generous. I mean sure it’s PRETTY, but that’s it really.

The instructions for the gameplay are minimal and there are absolutely no goals so it’s effectively freeform, but there’s a fair amount to do once you figure it out. Whether you find any of it compelling or not (given the absence of any tangible goals) is a totally different question.
I think it’s worthwhile just for the seizure-inducing graphics, but I’ve always been a strange one like that.
Heh, I can see that, but as a so-called space shooter, it’s sorely lacking. If you want a music-based space shooter, Beat Hazard is 10,000,000,000x better.

And you will get absolutely no argument from me on that point. None at all.
Now I want to play some Beat Hazard.
Well, Brink is Steamworks. I don’t think Hunted is, though.

Step 1: “wow that sounds like an awesome game”
Step 2: check steam library
Step 3: download a game I already own. Again.
I know Target Sales are bad form to list but my local Target is clearing out a bunch of Wii games for less than $8. Mostly movie and toy licenses. I picked up Tatsunoko vs Capcom for $7.48. Keep your eyes peeled when passing the Target endcaps. This is when Target starts clearing out old games to make room for the holiday rush.
My Target has a section of bargain priced games at the end of the PC games/software wall in the corner. These include the PSP versions of Final Fantasy Tactics and the Final Fantasy I remake for $9.99 each.
I think they just come with a big ol’ “YMMV” caveat attached. I’ve never seen the kind of deals that Dave Long got at his Magical Target Endcaps, but I don’t think anybody minded the heads up just in case.
I know that I’m going to be looking for Tatsunoko vs Capcom. Though I’ll probably continue to find the same hundred copies of The Biggest Loser instead.
That’s the standard price for them everywhere now.
Ah, okay. Well it’s still a good deal.
Steam Daily Deal for August 31 is The Next Big Thing for $14.99 (50% off). It is described thusly: “The Next BIG Thing is the new, hilarious adventure gem from the creators of Runaway. A great adventure game in high definition, loaded with laughs, tributes, mysteries and wacky puzzles!”
Wacky puzzles!
