The robbery-betrayal MP mode in K&L2 was so good but so tragically overlooked. I don’t imagine anyone is playing a single game of it.
Single player K&L2 is short, but it’s very intense and doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Booster Trooper is Steam’s Daily Deal for September 7th. It’s $2 (60% off). “Booster Trooper is the future of multiplayer platform shooters. It provides tons of fun with its fast paced action and larger-than-life weapons. You can run or fly around the map, blasting your enemies to bits with bullets, rockets, grenades, magma and other weapons from your arsenal.”
It’s the future!
Looks like Booster Trooper was a bust.
Maybe Steam’s Daily Deal for September 8th will draw more interest. It’s STORM: Frontline Nation for $10.00 (75% off). “Frontline Nation revolutionizes the turn-based strategy genre with unbelievable strategic depth and a cinematic scenario. Scarce resources and a prolonged economic crisis plunges half the world into strife, which can only be resolved by a force of arms.”

Not a single person on my friends list bought it.
This is insanely tempting.

I only got to experiment with a brief Sweden game in sandbox mode, wherein I completely screwed myself over by misunderstanding how the game’s attacks take place. I was under the impression I had to declare all of my attacks, end my turn and then resolve them all on the next, so I had my entire military lined up for a rapid strike against the dreaded Norwegians (along with dragging Iceland and Denmark into the fray along with me, I really like how you can set up mass war declarations like that), only to see my entire military sit still on my borders while the Norwegians attacked on their turn and carved me up. It may have been possible to salvage the situation, but it was really, really ugly and I just caved.
For the record, you have to declare an attack and resolve it before hitting the end turn button. With multiple attacks, just carry them out one at a time.
I’ll get back to it one day, when I don’t have a hundred new games breathing down my neck. The diplomacy, while basic on the surface, allows for some very intuitive maneuvers that aren’t present in a lot of other turn based strategy games. The mission system gives you some guidance, the economy and research are both extremely basic yet functional, and the actual battles themselves promise to be highly interesting once I get a large enough army that I’m not pushing three infantry around trying to jockey for position. It’s a step above a beer-and-pretzels boardgame, but it’s not quite as sophisticated as the description they give would imply.
So … better pure warfare than Civ, but far from grognardy? Sounds like it might be right up my alley. Is the tech tree remotely interesting?

The strategic map itself is not hex based. The best description I can give for how the game is structured is to call it a very heavily fleshed-out (and considerably better) Shattered Union. The strategic map is laid out in provinces and all development and movement is within and between them. The hexes come into play during a battle in a given province, where you zoom down to a tactical map, deploy your forces and have at each other until the victory conditions are met (usually territory control and victory points). Simplistic compared to a lot of hex-based games, but more complex than Civ combat, to be sure.
The tech tree is as boring as can be. Five categories, of which three are related to WMDs (biological, chemical and nuclear, although nuclear tech has civilian applications), one related to rocketry (the payoff being ICBMs) and one for general tech, which gives you bonuses in combat and is easily the one category every player should dump their money into as soon as they have the chance. Not a whole lot of interesting choices there, no upgraded tank models, or anything like that. You have Armor, not Abrams, Leopards and Challengers. Just Armor. Your ability to field those fancy, expensive units will depend on your infrastructure allowing you to support them in the first place, as the powerful units are disgustingly expensive compared to their lower-tech counterparts.
If you have any other questions I might be able to help out with, feel free to ask and I’ll try to answer as best I can given my limited experience.
Criterion is having a store wide sale to celebrate some facebook achievement, 50% off everything.

Strategy sale at Impulse this weekend. The highlight is probably the Men of War pack for $17.99 (down from $59.99).
Gamersgate is having an ARMA sale, with 50% off all the various ARMA games and DLC except for the base ARMA 2, which is 75% off (and thus $5), but including Operation Flashpoint under the new ARMA: Cold War Assault moniker. For some reason, the first ARMA is twice as much as the bundle with it and its expansion, so if that appeals to you, get the bundle.
Also, they have Dungeon Siege III for $25.
Also also, Steam’s weekend deal is 75% off Civ V, and 50-75% off Need for Speed games.

Steam lied for Civ V. 75% off $19.99 is $5 bucks, not $12.50!!

They’re using 49.99 as the base. I am not sure anyone sells it at that price anymore though.

No, if you look at the Steam page, they crossed out $19.99 and put 75%. They are using $19.99 as the base. This is a mistake. Would they honor it?
Edit: hmm… it looks like $49.99 or $19.99. Can’t tell because of the strikethrough.
That’s a 4, not a 1. I agree that it’s easy to mistake for a 1, though.
Sword of Stars Complete is $3.99. That’s a decent amount of fun for $4. it’s probably my favorite space strategy of the last few years, though it consistently kicks my ass.

Is anyone having trouble getting Civ5 from Steam tonight? I already had it installed on my PC but under my partner’s Steam account; sometimes when I buy games already installed under his account Steam won’t make me download it again. But I was getting all sorts of defrag and server errors, so I uninstalled his copy for lack of a better option. And now I still can’t download the fucking thing. Argh. Are their servers in SoCal or something?

They have servers everywhere. If the servers you’re on are having problems, go to steam -> settings -> downloads + cloud to change your server.
