This happens every time GMG has a decent sale. Get used to it if you plan to use their site.

My theory is that they can offer such huge savings by hosting their servers out of a cardboard box.

Hmmm GMG is slower than I am used to, but other than that I never had a problem with them. Own some 10+ games there too.
And right now they have XCOM steam version for 17 dollars, which is extremely tempting.

Seventeen dollars for XCOM is an excellent price. I just wish they were offering the DLC at 50% off too.

Yes, it’s the same price as the Amazon UK offer i referenced above in UK money. It might be even cheapeer if you can use the code on it. The GMG offer appears to be just a 24 hour sale.

Concerning GG:
Do keep in mind that they are Swedish and large parts of Europe traditionally take the days between Christmas and New Year off so I assume they run with a reduced staff incl. support. Probably doesn’t help them sort through this mess.

Yes I know it sounds probably odd for US ears but it’s the way it is here since well ever (Northern Europe and Mainland Middle Europe especially the German speaking parts).

GG’s official response:

We made a mistake. Our computer program grossly multiplied the discounts we were authorized to offer on these bundles and they were advertised at way below cost. We did not notice this on the day of the mistake because of the holidays. We have cancelled all unfulfilled orders as per our terms of use. We are working with the affected publishers to see what we can do with respect to partially filled orders. We highly value all of our loyal GamersGate customers and do not want to see our relationship with any of you damaged. Nor do we want to see our publisher partners harmed by our computer glitch. We are doing all that we can to sort this out, however due to the holidays we will most likely not be able to sort this out until next week. Please bear with us and forgive us for this disappointing error. We will update you as soon as possible.

So that’s what’s going on.

I (thank God) work for a subsidiary of a large German conglomerate, and as a result benefit from this awesome tradition. Essentially an extra week of paid vacation per year, over and above my regular vacation. If only most large American employers could be this civilized.

So I just made my first purchase of the holiday season among all the digital distribution sales. XCOM from GMG at $17.50. I’ve been wanting to jump on the XCOM bandwagon, but didn’t want to pay more than $20. Problem solved. I also had zero issues during checkout, and registered on Steam immediately.

A less than 6 month old AAA title for $17.50. That’s a bargain.

For the next 12 hours Hearts of Iron III Their Finest Hour is available for $4.99 from GamersGate.

Guess I’ll find out next week then, as my order was accepted by the system on the first day and they have taken my money.

I’m hoping Steam will match this at some point, since I have the HOI3 collection tied to it.

DotEmu has a bundle of point-and-click adventures for 10 euros (that’s the currency of Estonia).

o Broken Sword trilogy
o Fairy Tale about Father Frost
o Gobliiins trilogy
o Jack Orlando
o Runaway 1 and 2
o Septerra Core (ooh, a RPG)
o The Last Express

Hmmm I like GMG for their often great prices on new games compared to competitors, but I just read their “about” and this pisses me off:

“Unlike any other digital retailer, our customers can trade-in their digitally downloaded games for credit in their account and this credit can then be used for new purchases. We have some very clever patent-protected technology that allows only us to do this.”

(emphasis mine)

What the fucking fuck.

The way it is worded, it sounds like the ip behind their trade-in system is patented, not the actual concept of trading something in.

“Trade in for points that later can be used in other products from the same shop” isn’t exactly unique of them, and a patent for it should be void because it’s a prior art case.

When I bought my Bethesda bundle on GG I sent it to myself as a gift. Just out of curiosity I tried to redeem it today despite the order being cancelled. I now have a Bethesda bundle in my account and a full refund, will be interesting to see if they populate it with keys at some point or just leave it as is.

Spec Ops: The Line is $5.25 on GMG after the 30% coupon today, if anyone’s interested.

I think the method to “return” games is meant.
I don’t know of anyone else that allows digital licenses to be given back to them for credit besides GMG.
I don’t see what black magic besides removing the access to the download is needed but then again I’m only a gamer using their service.

Sold! Thanks Rattler.

This is why their Capsule client requires a “call home” every three days. If it doesn’t get the nod from GMG that you still own the game then it deactivates it.

It’s not rocket surgery and not of interest to me - to the degree that I’ve never bought a capsule game from them - but I guess their patent would be on Capsule.
