I’ll second that. I liked the base game well enough, but Gods & Kings added another dimension to it.
Indeed. Just picked this one up. Average was just about $4.
I picked up G&K a while back, but just recently actually sat down to play through a Civ 5 game using it. I enjoyed it, though I have to say the religion felt more game-y than I like. Wasn’t a big fan of the religion names being just names, with nothing to really make one stand out from another…you basically choose your bonuses and that’s it. Would have rather had it be more like choosing a Civ, where you get some predetermined bonuses that fit the theme. But that’s a minor nitpick, and overall I’d say G&K made Civ 5 a better game.
Expeditions Conquistador is $14.39 over @ GMGwith this voucher: GMG20-LLASD-D8WBQ
Alan Wake is $3 on Steam. I haven’t heard anything about this game, but it looks interesting. Worth it?
Odd. Wasn’t Alan Wake in a humble bundle weekly sale or something before? Is Remedy about to go under or something?
The other Steam weekend sale is DmC Devil may Cry for $29.99 (40% off).
Today’s Steam sale is Serious Sam HD for $4.99 (75% off).
As with all daily/weekend sales, it’s not always just one game. The whole serious sam series is on sale 75% off. Same with Alan Wake. Unfortunately not for DMC.
I rather like how game-y the religions are, particularly since circumstances mean the religions are often quite different from game to game. Yeah, they aren’t “real” religions, but I’ll take replayability over authenticity. Plus, while the AI always chose standard names, I got to pick something amusing that fit the theme. Nerdism, Servants of Cthulhu, Gnomes of Zurich, etc.
I don’t think Civ is ever going to truck with assigning specific, distinct bonuses to various real historical religions. Too much of a minefield. But I’d much rather religions offer distinct bonuses instead of being different in name only, so the Civ V implementation strikes me as about as good as we’re likely to get.
Very much this. Religion was OK in Civ IV, but the “it’s just a name” aspect meant it was less interesting than what we got in Gods and Kings.

this is for you, Rockman:
Meet the new Razer Blade, a gaming Ultrabook that’s thinner than a Macbook Air http://zite.to/19sl8DD via @zite
I just bought a new laptop for work for $400 after taxes. It has a 17 inch screen, a number pad so that I can enter numbers easily into a spreadsheet, and it works great for both web and office apps and has 8GB of RAM, and Windows 8. But it can’t play games. So I’m guessing that when we get a new laptop for our home, it will have to be around the same price range, not $1800 plus tax like the Razer Blade. :) Or even the $800 laptop someone recommended above. Way too pricey.

You want to play games or not?? :p
I’d buy that.
I bought my prior laptop with gaming performance primarily in mind. Then I took it on a trip through India for 3 weeks, and the weight about killed me. Particularly since, as I discovered, it had very little life when not plugged in. So when I was planning a trip to Turkey, I bought an Alienware m11x (r3). I wanted power, I wanted lightweight, and I wanted something that I could use for 5+ hours on a charge, even if I couldn’t play games on battery. I was willing to accept a much smaller screen to get those features.
The Razer Blade is the same category, something that can play games while being lightweight. The main reason I wouldn’t get one is that my iPad occupies that space now. It’s not only very light and plays games, it plays games for 6-10 hours on battery, and will go longer with a very lightweight external battery. Granted, it doesn’t have a lot of horsepower, but it has worthwhile games. They aren’t Civ V, but they’re better than the games that will run on a Windows laptop with similar battery life.
I do, but when it’s too much over $400, it will fail the “disguised” part of the hidden game machine. My wife’s smart. She knows that a laptop that does everything she wants is around that price. So if I have to sneak a hidden game machine past her, it has to be around the same price range somehow.
Perhaps a 2nd hand purchase from Craigslist? I’m not sure how it’s possible but there must be a way.

That thing is pretty sexy other than the logo

Perhaps the price is because its thin and thin stuff are expensive. Made a comparison to MacBook Air. Who play games in those type of machines, right? (Nudge nudge)

Awesome new indy bundle:

I loved Gas Guzzlers. It’s basically old-school Need For Speed with guns. I bought it at $25 and felt it was worth every penny.

I would consider a refurb from a reputable outlet before risking Craigslist. Too many ways that computers can be subtly failing.
Even for Web browsing and productivity work, 1366 x 768 resolution is pretty limiting, and the extra sharpness you get by going up to 1920 x 1080 makes a substantial difference. If you’re able to successfully make that argument, targeting a higher resolution should push you up out of the ultra-budget category, at which point it’s not too hard to “happen” to pick one that also has a basic dGPU.
Failing that, just look for one with the best iGPU possible. This chart is helpful, and if you wait a while to get one with a Haswell chip, their iGPU is supposed to be a substantial improvement over the ones available today.
And if all else fails and you have to bow out of the mainstream AAA space, there’s more than enough great games outside of it that don’t place much demand on your system.

Obviously what is between you and your wife is between you and your wife. But this is your hobby. As hobbies go, it isn’t that expensive. Tell your wife if you can’t play video games anymore, you’ve always been interested in taking up sailing. Or learning to fly airplanes. And don’t let her read the Hex kickstarter thread.
Is Gas Guzzlers single player?
Gas Guzzlers sounded awesome until I read http://www.gamespot.com/gas-guzzlers-combat-carnage/reviews/gas-guzzlers-combat-carnage-review-6378980/
Kind of like how Clutch sounded awesome until I played it for a couple of days
