This has already been a pretty amazing year for games. Right up there with 92/93, 99/00 and 07/08 as one of the best seasons for incredible games. And we’ve still got Arkham 3, Watch Dogs, Assassin’s Creed 4, South Park, and a whole slew of old school Kickstarted games coming in '14 including Broken Age, Wasteland 2, Project Eternity, the new Torment, etc. I think 13/14 has the potential to be the best gaming season ever, topping all those others I mentioned.

People actually think AC4 is GoTY territory? They’ve clearly gone the CoD route, pumping out derivative shit as fast as they can. It might be good, but no way it’s GoTY good.

The pirate theme interested me so when we were in the past E3 dates, I went to watch a trailer. I saw a video of a sail ship traveling at 150km/h avoiding reefs as it was a motorboat and one shotting enemy ships with cannons and said “mmm nope” and closed the video in that moment.

That’s what I used to think until this year when I played AC: Brotherhood. It restored my faith in them. The level design is once again as good as the original AC, and the whole game is just really, really well designed. Well, except for the ending. The last 30 minutes of the game are pretty poor, but the first hundred hours of that game are amazing. I totally thought going the yearly franchise route meant that the quality would start dropping, but AC:Brotherhood was the best AC game I played by far. And before GTA V came out, I was really digging the first few hours of AC: Revelation too. What they really nail in both games is that sense of place, and the basic flow of the main gameplay, which is traversal and combat in that world. If they can create such a cool place in Renaissance era Rome, I think they have a pretty good shot of creating an amazing Pirates-era Caribbean.

Assassin’s Creed 4 definitely could be a GOTY contender. Obviously I haven’t played it, but the trailers and demonstrations have been outstanding, and Far Cry 3 and Assassin’s Creed 3 were awesome. AC4 looks to be a fusion of the best of each. We’ll see.
