Check their forum (it’s below the download demo/add to wishlist boxes) and click on trading if you’re interested in buying a game on there. Most of the time people offer these for free or any card. You don’t even have to add them to your friends list to make a trade anymore. These don’t work on multi-packs though.

Are you saying check out the forum for each particular game you’re interested in, or is there a central place?

IGN is giving away Gone Home to their IGN Prime members this month, so you should be able to sign up for a month of that and end up with the game for $7 or so.

I think the issue was that they left the second link still active after Halloween. However the dev supposedly revoked keys that were issued after his intended end date. I put the second link up to save people’s time since the site was so slow from all the load. So anyways if you got a key on Halloween, it should be fine.

I don’t remember if I got it on 10/31 or 11/1, but I did get it, and now it’s missing from my Steam library. I don’t actually care as I never intended to play it, just a data point for you.

I wonder what would have happened if I downloaded and played a bit? Would Steam have just deleted it from under me?

Confirmed, my copy is gone too. I’m fine with them removing it if it was a mistake.

Mine is gone as well. I bet there will be a number of people who get upset about having the game deleted from their Steam account after having registered it on Steam.

From reading this article about the hacking of the Steam key generator it looks like the entire giveway was cancelled because the developer was unable to separate the hacked keys from the legitimately distributed keys and thus simply decided to cancel everything just to be safe.

A few hours later, I learned that the offer was so popular that it shut down BMT’s servers. BMT being the sales provider I use to handle the sales and distribution of our games. I looked into it and discovered why. People were ordering multiple copies of the game – hundreds at a time. And collecting Steam keys for reselling later. This is something I didn’t anticipate happening, so I removed the Steam keys from the giveaway and placed the game on a few other websites to use as mirrors. BMT made the game live again, and I hoped that was the end of it. Sadly, no. It almost instantly led to a large number of angry emails and tweets – people like playing on Steam! – so in the end I decided to see if I could do something about it. I asked BMT if we could create some kind of “1 code per IP” system, to prevent exploiting. They said it was possible, and created a Steam key generator page that could detect your IP.

This didn’t deter the resellers, however. They easily masked their IPs and began chewing through the Steamcodes again. At that point I threw up my hands and decided to cancel the free giveaway altogether. I had been monitoring the giveaway and dealing with the Steam issues and download problems for 36 straight hours and I was exhausted. There was only so much work I was willing to do for a free giveaway, and I had reached my limit. I told BMT to cancel everything and put the regular sales page back up. I finally collapsed to get some much needed sleep!

The next morning I woke up to discover something terrifying. BMT did remove the link to the Steam key generator, but they hadn’t removed the generator itself. It was still being exploited. The link to the generator had propagated its way onto the internet, and the resellers had been hard at work. 30,000 keys were nabbed overnight while I was sleeping.

As things stand right now, I am attempting to get those 30,000 codes disabled.

Sounds like a complete nightmare for the poor guy. I applaud Wadjet Eye Games for trying to do something fun and cool as a treat for their fans at Halloween, and I totally understand how, given the circumstances, cancelling ALL the free copies was probably the best thing to do. Hopefully the experience doesn’t scare them or other developers off from trying this again in the future. Fucking scammers ruining stuff for everyone.

Since I’m generally a happy and tolerant person these days, I’m satisfied with an occasional chiding comment to discourage boorish behavior. I find that the best approach among polite company.

Besides, I’m confident no one here has sent any angry tweets about free games not available on Steam. Right, everyone?
