hoho

I spent $7.50 earlier this year for Dom 3 and was so overwhelmed I locked it in a (virtual) closet. Can I assume Dom4 is just as overwhelming, or is it somehow more newb friendly?

No. It is not newb friendly. The manual is awesome, because it’s written by our own Bruce Geryk, but Dom 4 is not what I’d call super-friendly. Between the smorgasboard of systems, obtuse UI, and sometimes downright hostile graphics, it’s not a gentle learning curve.

Be prepared to go old-school and read a manual.

A bunch of DDO stuff is 75% off today in their webmarket.

Menace of the Underdark $8.75. Comes with 1000 turbine points, so everything else is basically free. I’m going to guess it’s around $90 value if you don’t own the bonuses. Druid class is fun, and there’s a bunch of quest packs included too. I really enjoyed exploring the giant Underdark and Demonweb areas. The “Epic Destiny” system, which comes with this, is pretty much required for high level play and usually costs $10 in the ingame store.

Half Orc pack $5. 500 turbine points and includes the race, which is around $10 in their ingame store.

There’s a few others, but those are the biggest bargains. :)

Telefrog mentioned above the games being “gameplay over graphics” but even the gameplay is a bit flaky. Because UI and controls are part of the gameplay bit, and hell, I wish the developer could learn to use a frigging table to show information about units in a way that’s easy to see, compare and organize, all in one screen.
At least Dom3 had that problem.

As he explains, it can obtuse.

With Whom.

Hah, it’s only a single letter! I can argue I missed pressing the key while typing!

DDO is soo ugly.

Thanks, I’d been waiting on this one.

Hey guys, this Brazilian site Nuuvem has Wargame: Airland Battle for about $9 US.

I just went and tried the Steam code and it worked perfectly, so it looks like a win. The site doesn’t appear to have an English version, so you’ll have to fudge with registration and such, but it was pretty straightforward. Enjoy!

I had planned to do AI until I had at least a grasp on how to take turns, etc… Then hopefully find some people on QT3 to play against. Mostly play iOS games multiplayer as they usually don’t have the best AI (NHex, BotB, DoM).

I will play against whoever/whomever. :)

Amazon also has Star Trek, the most recent tie-in action shooter for $4.99. Steam code.

For $5, maybe it’s worth a playthrough?

So if I take the time to learn Dom 3 will picking up Dom 4 be easy? I have Dom 3 but if there’s going to be an additional learning curve to learn Dom 4 I might as well put all my time into that one since these are games that appeal to brain surgeons. That sale price is tempting. I doubt we will see it cheaper anytime soon.

I’d say that the Dominions games are similar enough mechanically to each other that learning 3 before 4 is a good idea. Honestly, once you learn the peculiarities of the interface, playing the game is pretty simple.

It’s mastering the different races, pretenders, magic, and rules that will be the learning curve.

Edit: In fact, I’d say it’s a lot like anyone’s first tentative steps into pen & paper RPGs. Learning the game’s rules is part of the game.

Same price on Steam direct, but you don’t get the $5 credit Amazon is giving out; so thanks for the heads-up. :)

Not to go all VM fanboi, but this is a ridiculously good deal if you’re F2P or Premium and don’t own all the extra content. You can also get the base package for 5 bucks if you’re VIP or otherwise own the rest of it.

I prefer to call it “utilitarian.” ;) Besides, on a forum full of fans of Minecraft, Dominions 3, and all manner of retro games, “gameplay before eye candy” should be a common refrain. For all its shortcomings, DDO is still my favorite MMO, mostly because it feeds my altaholicism in unhealthy ways.

I think it looks pretty good for a game that launched in February of 2006. Which is before the PS3, Wii, or iPhone came out. My understanding is that they’ve been focusing on adding more content over graphical revamps after complaints at launch.

I dont think there is much of a dom 3 community anymore. Most of us up and moved to dom 4.

I picked up Dom 4, while Dom 3 is only $5 I don’t see myself going back to play it. Hopefully I can figure out how to play enough to brave multiplayer.

I know its not a game, but Corel Paint Shop Pro Ultimate is on sale for $29 at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00EOI2SR2/ref=gb1h_img_c-2_6862_c7fb4c24?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_t=701&pf_rd_s=center-new-2&pf_rd_r=0FRJMA4JST879JGVD731&pf_rd_i=20&pf_rd_p=1682906862

The reason I mention it is that it comes with a plugin called Perfectly Clear. I tried the demo for it on several photos and it made them all look better. Many times my photos have what looks like a grey haze over them. This brightened up the colors and made it look more how I remembered the locations, without making them look artificial. The company sells the plugin by itself for $200 (which I would never pay that amount).

Is there any word on the timeframe for Dom 4 on Steam?

Who knows? It’s on Desura now, which is actually friendlier in terms of user permission.

Xbox Live Cyber-Monday sale. Standouts would seem to be FarCry 3: Blood Dragon for $3.74, The Witcher 2 for $7.49, and Red Dead Redemption for $7.49.
