NASCAR 2013 is on DailyRoyale

That reminded me of… 1000 years ago when I worked on the Impressions QA team. Several of us were loaned out to Papyrus to do QA on one of the NASCAR games. I wasn’t one of them, but… a few fond memories:

  • The crew said they always had to take a 30 minute break after testing, before getting in the car, after a few scary moments when they pulled out of the Papyrus parking lot at 100mph, screeched around a corner, and nearly slammed into something. The racing reflexes were still heightened, evidently. Or maybe that was just “driving in Boston.”

  • Dale Earnhardt Jr evidently had some 8-person LAN/Internet racing room in his basement and would help test the game in Internet sessions with the QA team. Needless to say, playing the game isn’t the same as racing a car, and the QA team played the game so much that they pretty much could smoke anybody, including Dale. My understanding is that this pissed him off so much that he called the lead of Papyrus and complained about them beating him, so they were told to stop winning when they played against him.

Fun times.

I couldn’t resist this. Even though I’ve already played House of the Dead Overkill on the Wii (and it wasn’t that great). I just can’t resist more typing of the dead.

D’oh! I missed this post. It’s only $6.80 on Gamersgate! Oh well, too late now.

Christmas is coming
Your backlog’s already fat
Please visit Steam and buy some hats!

OK, now I think I’m ready.

I am pretty certain I will not be buying much on this Steam sale or any other future sales. Over the past years I have bought a lot of games I had always wanted that had been out for a while. I eventually bought nearly all of those games. Right now my wish list is full of games that are not out yet and those do not get steep discounts, if any at all. The only real chance Ill pick up a game is if there is one that I do not know about that gets some talk here on QT3 that also seems very interesting to me. Furthermore there is very little that came out last year that I do not own or am actually interested in.

Me either. But that’s just because I went back through my Humble Bundle purchases last month, and added them all to Steam. I’d been playing like one game I really wanted from each…but now that I actually look…loads of games to play!

More new bundles:

Good stuff in both of them. :)

Bully for $3.75 on Steam is a pretty good deal.

I bought nothing from the Thanksgiving Steam sale, but I did buy one or two games here and there the month before that. I will also dig into my backlog, rather than buying anything…but my willpower is weak…

Steam today: Bully: Scholarship Edition $3.74 -75%. A “hidden gem” by many word-of-mouth lists.
Steam mid-week #1: War Thunder Steam Pack $17.49 -30%. Other DLCs or packs -30% or -50%. WW2 fighter planes MMO combat game.
Steam mid-week #2: Just Cause 2 $2.99 -80%. $5.99 to get game + all DLCs. There’s a new multiplayer mode patch that just dropped.

It’s worth mentioning that this is a PC + Android bundle, making it an even better value.

So which games in the humble bundle are the good ones? I only know Little Inferno, which should be good.

I’ve read good things about the adventure game, Gemini Rue.

And dang, I just bought Bundle Stars last night for Prime World Defenders. It’s in Indie Royale now, and its other games look better than the Bundle Stars set.

I think these are actually all at least worth checking out.

-Aaaaa: I played the original for a while, and it was a fun score-chasing game based on falling off of buildings.
-Gemini Rue: Haven’t played it yet, but supposedly a very atmospheric, well-done adventure game. I remember reading a very positive review on RPS you could probably find.
-Jack Lumber: The least interesting at first glance, but reviews seem pretty positive – supposedly a more involved/strategic spin on Fruit Ninja.
-Little Inferno: Nice art and supposed to be interesting to open up all the items, even if there’s not that much going on mechanically.
-Anomaly 2: The first one was a pretty fun light strategy game based on flipping around the tower defense structure. Don’t see any reason this wouldn’t be good too.
-Hero Academy: We had a league going for a while when this first came out on iOS. It’s a very nice light head-to-head asynchronous strategy game. Also, the bundle page doesn’t make it clear, but it looks like this is the Gold pack, which includes all the teams that are separate DLC. And it all goes on a unified account that you can use on any platform.

Little Inferno is great for the little arsonist in you. I don’t disagree with Boojum that there isn’t a lot going on there, but it’s still a kick to watch things burn.

By far my favorite Rockstar game. Never played the PC version, though, so I can’t speak to the game’s stability. But $3.75 is a pretty low risk for a very interestingly designed game.

One thing I will say is, do yourself a favor and play it with a controller. The default PC interface suh-ucks.

Not sure this has been mentioned. EUIV for $10 at the Humble Bundle store. I doubt it’ll be cheaper in the Steam sale, given its newness.

So I own EUIII and stared at it for a while, then moved on. Will I do the same with EUIV?

Oops. Double post.

I think if you liked the idea of EUIII (theme/setting, grand strategy, etc) but bounced off it from a UI/complexity/what-the-hell-do-I-do perspective then I’d definitely recommend giving EUIV a go (especially at that price).

They’ve greatly simplified certain aspects of the game (dumping sliders, bringing in monarch points, etc) and the UI has been overhauled to make common tasks a lot more obvious. Plus the game overall just looks a lot nicer than EUIII since it’s using the CK2 engine.

Edit: oh, and I’d recommend watching a Youtube tutorial/Let’s Play to learn the ropes. I found Quill18’s ones quite useful - http://youtu.be/QGH-Sc1EfdI and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4hREoTu8yY
