Is there any way of experiencing the original ending, before internet drama forced a change? I’d MUCH rather see what the devs originally intended for the story, particularly because I suspect I’ll be one of the strange outliers who loves what they did.

Yeah, me too! I want to join the legions of angry fans!
Interestingly in Steam, the meta score for ME1 is 89, ME2 is 94 and Dragon Age Origins is 91.
ME2 is 94??? What?

Don’t install the Extended Cut DLC. Every other singleplayer DLC will work without installing Extended Cut, I tried. IMO originals are the better endings because they leave rooms for interpretations. Others say they are empty. You decide.
The story is as good as ME1. I think you’ll really enjoy most of it. It’s really superbly done and worth experiencing.
But you’ll probably not like the ending. But it’s still worth experiencing. I’d say it’s more like ME1 in terms of story and story impact, but ME2 in terms of gameplay.
I’d be willing to bet you like the revised ending better. Unless you really like plot holes. If you like plot holes, I’m reversing my bet.
Bioshock 1 and Bioshock 2 are bundle at amazon for $4.99, again.
It looks like they both register on Steam, and no DLC is mentioned for the second game.

This sale comes around quite frequently!
Ditto, but I was able to force myself to finish (no side quests or exploring, just bare minimum required to finish the damned thing). I did like ME2 enough to have no problem finishing, but am now faced with the same lack of interest with ME3. The super-long dialogues and cut-scenes make me scream. After an hour or 2, it’s just a big, fat “meh” for me, but I’m sure I’ll force myself to finish at some point just to see what the ending controversy is all about.
In ME3, if you’re bothered by long dialogues and cutscenes, the spacebar is your friend. Mind you, if you just want more action out of the game, the multiplayer might be more to your liking.
conVurt raises a good point. If you like the gameplay of the series you my find yourself enjoying the multiplayer. A large plethora of classes to use, as well as a wide variety of guns to unlock. You can almost find anything to fit a play style, and the multiplayer is pretty much the single player stripped of any story and cutscenes. Just good old fashioned alien blasting.

alpha protocol and the new Fallout games scratched that itch for me.

Yes - good games that I have already played, but thanks all the same.
Gold box deal on Amazon today is Bioshock Infinite for around $35 PC, $40 console
I think going on ebay to get a never settle bundle is still a much cheaper route to get bioshock infinite (plus crysis 3 and farcry 3 blood dragon) for the pc.
Groupees has another decent bundle of games and music:
Highlights
Karateka (Steam)
Patrician 4 + Rise of a Dynasty DLC (Steam)
Blood Bowl Legendary Edition (Steam)
Drakansang (Steam)
All of the games have Steam options, some have Desura or Direct Download as well.
Not a bad haul for $5!

I am playing Alpha Protocol currently (for a second time). It feels older than it is, but is still holding my attention.
Karateka, wha? Is this a remake? Is it any good?
Been waiting for this. Thanks for the head’s up!
You’re much better off buying a Never Settle bundle off of eBay for about the same price that comes with Steam keys for BS:I and Tomb Raider, and an Ubishop key for FC3: Blood Dragon.
