There’s no end game. Achievements I suppose but that’s it. You could play only this game for the rest of your life if you were suitably obsessed with baseball (which obviously you’re not :) )

How are they going with the American Football version of that? Has it ever materialised?

Not yet. Front Office Football 8 materialised on Steam last week, interface as grim as ever.

It is… mixed. To get the most of it you have to have some conception of the statistical measures of baseball, and which ones are important.

However, when looking at things broadly, you can get by pretty far simply knowing one or two. When comparing players in free agency, for example, knowing WAR (which is listed on the far right of this image)

and age can get you a long way. The higher the WAR, the better the player, basically. Since WAR is essentially a distillation of all their performance stats, measured against the average of their position, and cumulative for the year, that is going to give you the best measure for someone who knows nothing.

Age is important as players typically hit their peak in their 28-32 seasons. Meaning a player who is 28 and one who is 32 who have identical stats, you would always prefer the 28 year old as they should get better for a few more years, while the 32 year old will probably see their performance start to decline within the next season or two. A player may be the best in baseball at 30, and marginal by 34.

But the game is going to be dense. Have you played any Football Manager or other sports management type games? If you have and grasp the basic salary management aspects of constructing a team, it shouldn’t be too bad. If, however, you are unfamiliar with both that and baseball? We’re talking EVE Online level learning curves then.

Thanks CraigM! I definitely will not be installing OOTP14 or OOTP17, both of which are in my Steam library now thanks to bundles.

I have very mixed feelings now @Rock8man ;)

It’s tough, since I do love baseball and OoTP, and don’t want to push people away from it per se. But if I am being honest if you have no experience with baseball or sports management sims, this is a really tough game to recommend.

Thanks, guys. I have played the gladiatorial/rpg party management games, which I guess are similar but not as deep. Perhaps I’ll just keep working on the backlog I already have.

Lichdom: Battlemage is on a 24-hour sale for only $0.49 (99% off) at Bundle Stars, an historical low.

99% off? I don’t even know what that game is, may have to buy it on principle! Not sure what principle exactly but that’s beside the point.

I wonder if that Humble Bundle is a mistake with OOTP17. I wonder if it is supposed to be 16, since the Humble store is selling 17 for $20, which is listed as a 50% off sale.

Also available from BundleStars, Planetary Annihilation for $1.00. It’s not the best RTS game, or even the best RTS game of 2014, but it is decent and certainly worth $1 for anyone who doesn’t already own it. The sequel, Planetary Annihilation : Titans, is $7.99, but has been cheaper as part of bundles recently, so I’d hold out on that purchase.

They also have the Shadow of Mordor GOTY Bundle for only $5.99. Contains the game and all DLC.

They have a nice LEGO Pix-A-Mix Bundle going as well. $9.99 buys you your choice of 3 LEGO titles from a selection including the Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Marvels Avengers, Avengers Season Pass, Jurassic World, Harry Potter 1-4, Harry Potter 5-7, and a bunch of Batman titles. It’s like buying two at 75% discount sale price and getting the third for free,

There is a whole bunch of stuff on sale in their store, and you can use the code CYBERMONDAY11 to save an additional 11% on purchases over $10.

Could be. Then again, it says it includes TS2016, but I got 2017.

Thanks much for the heads-up on that. This breed of game (not sure what to call it – the Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Just Cause 2 sorta’ open world, sorta’ mission based, lots of things to collect and do genre) pushes all my buttons, and it’s been on my wish list for a while.

Excellent! It’s a fantastic game, and worth far more than $6, especially with all it’s DLC included.

Have fun!

A good bundle added a bunch of extra games like Nuclear Throne & Orion Trail. Amazing deal now.

I don’t know anything about the Shadows of Mordor game except apparently high level enemies get their own theme song that is heard when they show up to fight you, and the one I saw had the rather unfortunate name “Dush”, so I just heard a militaristic chanting of “DOOOOOUCHE

Assassin’s Creed 3 is the December PC giveaway for Ubisoft’s 30th anniversary.

Well that’s disappointing. Both because I already own it, and because… ugh. AC3.

Just heading up that (if it hasn’t changed since it was released), the bundle didn’t give you access to Steam keys for the games if that is your thing, even those that provide one with individual purchases - DRM-free only.

I, however, have not played this one because, well, I’d rather play in Rome or a pirate ship.

But at free? I’ll give it a spin.
