With Arkham Asylum I just created an offline GFWL profile so my saves were stored locally. I’m assuming that hasn’t changed with Arkham City.

Wait, is this the second time you’re finishing Asylum, or the third? :)
I guess maybe I could see not going back if I’d already beaten the Ivy fight, that’s a huge pain in the ass, but otherwise you have to finish it. HAVE TO!

It was my first play through and I think was busy in the Botanical Gardens, so about 2/3 through I guess?
Not sure if I really want to start from scratch again. Wasn’t THAT blown away by the whole brawler gameplay, though I gather most people here were pretty happy with it. I’m not one for finicky combos so I just stuck to the basics and thus consequently it got a bit repetitive for me…

I played Arkham City first and really enjoyed it however I am now playing Asylum and it’s great, a bit tighter and more focused and really really enjoying it. I think it’s slightly better than City but both are by far the best Superhero games, if only we could get some as good for other characters (not Spiderman though please :D).

If controlling Batman while he beats the shit out of 10+ thugs at a time doesn’t do it for you, this game isn’t for you. :)

Also, playing on Hard so that you kind of have to use something other than left-click could make the game more interesting. YMMV, though. I adore both games for the narratives, combat, riddles… just everything. :)

hehe yeah, makes you really feel like a superhero beating the crap outta them.

Sorry, it’s me late to the game and keeping the thread alive.
I’m quite far in now, Poison Ivy needs to be stopped. Anyways I just love the way The Joker communicates with you. the way he speaks to his guards who are no longer awake and says Tha’s you there bats with resignation in his voice.
It’s like he knows he’s gonna lose but he 's still gotta give it a good go.
The Killer Croc section has been the poorest bit so far, he’s such a great character and continually having me run away from him isn’t how I imagined The Batman taking him down.
After completing this i’m going to start Arkham City from the start again, in fact it’s so bad i’ve started watching The Animated Series again as well as The Brave and the Bold.

I’d like to apologize in advance . . .
Seriously though, it’s a fantastic game. Enjoy!

With the new Batman game out, it had me thinking I may want to replay the other two games. I think I beat them both on normal, and from what I remember I didn’t really have to play that smart. Are these games that you have to play on hard if you want to be forced to play intelligently? Do you think its best to turn off the little counter lightning bolts? That probably made it a lot easier than it needed to be too. From what I rememebr I liked the first one better because it introduced the gadgets more slowly. Since I’m not great at beat em ups, I liked starting off slowly.
The lack of lightning bolts means you just have to pay close attention to read the enemy attacks. It’s pretty difficult. In AA they go away if you choose Hard difficulty, but in AC they only go away if you get to New Game+ mode.
I don’t think I’d replay both of them and then try to play AO in the next few months. You’ll probably get burned out. I guess playing AA would let you practice with the gadgets.

So are you saying you don’t recommend playing without the lightning bolts? Since I already beat AA on normal difficulty I don’t want to play it again on normal. Looks like no new game + in AA, so I guess hard difficulty is the only way to go. Maybe I won’t get very far since I’m probably not great at this game, but I think normal was too easy.
Oh I recommend it, I just wouldn’t say there’s any difference in how “smart” you have to play. It doesn’t necessarily open up the combat system. It does look great without the visual noise and it requires a lot of focus to read the enemy attacks. Give it a try, you’ll probably like it.

I’d say shooting for 3 bats in the challenges is more fun than playing the story on Hard. You can spam your way through the combat even against HP sponges, but being forced to play tactically and max your combos opens a whole new dimension of gameplay.

So your saying shooting for 3 bats in the challenges forces you to play tactically, more so than playing on hard?

That was my experience, yes. I had at first dismissed the combat as shallow button mashing because it lets you get away with that, but going for high scores opened my eyes to the true beauty of the system.

OK, thanks. I’ll give it a try - along with trying story mode in hard. Then I’ll see what’s better. Maybe both will win!

Heh, too many Batman threads on the front page.
Just to provide another data point, I enjoyed playing through the story on Hard way better than on Normal. Having the counter lightning bolts not be there made the game a lot better and the fighting felt more natural and I felt more like a badass.
I did get through on Hard, and almost beat all the challenges too, except for one, which prevented me from getting the final Gold Brawler achievement as well as the “complete everything” achievement.
But then I played through the game again on Hard on the PC, and I had a much better time finishing the game again on Hard than I did doing the challenges. So on the PC I didn’t even bother with the challenges. (You can’t turn off the lightning bolts in challenges).
Then Arkham City came out, and they took out the option of getting rid of the lightning bolts even on Hard mode. At first I was annoyed, but as you go through the game, you realize it’s because they added several new types of enemies, and the way they show you that you’re in danger and how these new enemy types are vulnerable is really only obvious with the lightning indicators over their heads. So I can see why they removed the option in the second game, only allowing you to unlock it in New Game+, since by then you’ll have learned the ins and outs of all the new enemy types.
However, for the first game? Arkham Asylum? I enjoyed it immeasurably more on Hard with the lightning bolts turned off.
I bought the game again last week or so when it was on sale on Xbox One. And I played it for about a couple of hours, up until my first death. Gosh, this game was fun on Hard difficulty. I feel a little guilty, since I should be finishing Arkham Knight instead of starting Arkham Asylum again.
