You don’t have to use those special moves if you’re not ready for them. Mouselook, LMB, RMB, and direction key + double-tap spacebar (which is the only annoying keyboard control).

Feel free to tool around Arkham City for a while after obtaining a new gadget. There’s a lot of little side events and missions you can stumble across, not to mention heaps of bad guys to dispatch at your leisure. Rushing from one mission to the next isn’t necessary at all, especially if you’re having trouble working new gadgets into your combat rotation.

I didn’t change much… I remember it mapped the special moves to e, r, t, q and c, so I just made sure those keys had the moves I wanted, plus you can double-tap any number key to use the corresponding gadget.

I did get through the game with my limited skills on normal difficulty, but I don’t think I took advantage of a lot the game had to offer. At some point I’m going to replay them both, one after the other so I can take advantage of my learning in AA and apply it to AC. Maybe up the difficulty too.

I remapped whatever the cape stun key is to my mouse thumb button, I think. It was in some inconvenient place.

Did you do the Riddler stuff at all? His quest series is pretty cool and makes you use your gadgets, to boot.

Anyhow, yeah, the combat truly shines on Hard but fair warning: it is staggeringly difficult at first. You’ll learn to dodge, flip and use your takedowns (which put you in a brief invulnerable state) or you’ll die… a lot. I think the cheapest takedown activates after 3 or 5 hits and you can use that to instantly put down one of the tougher bad guys then rinse n’ repeat, so it’s good to start there and branch out once you’re comfortable with the flow.

edit: woops, double post

Just throw them at the start or combat, anywhere in front of you. Catwoman’s main problem is that she doesn’t have as many CC options as Batman and doesn’t hit that hard so she can get overwhelmed. Caltrops removes a sector of attack for a while so you can concentrate on the one or two guys of the moment, or on dodging annoying Ivy bombs.

Fucking GFWL. This thread made me want to play again, but I can’t start a New Game + because it doesn’t think I have finished the game, despite having a save that is completely finished. Put a fucking bullet it this piece of shit “service” already.

You know, parts of this game are wonderful: The atmosphere, voice acting, and the feeling that you really are Batman.

I am even getting better at the combat, and just figured out that you can hack security boxes, I must have missed the part earlier where it was supposed to show me that.

But the lack of “save anywhere” baffles.

But maybe it is just me: Are there people here who actually enjoy dying on the last guy in a 6 guy room or the last section of a complicated puzzle, and having to redo the whole level?

It’s manufactured content, sure, but it’s not egregious in AC. Wait 'til you get to some of the landmark fights, those can get a bit annoying.

I don’t remember it being a problem anywhere. It was definitely a problem in that first fight. But once I got past that hump, it was never a problem again. And if I got defeated somewhere, it was always a good stopping point for the night anyway. And then next time I played, it wasn’t so bad to just go through the place again and beat all the bad guys. Why? Because beating bad guys up isn’t a chore in this game. It IS the game. And it’s always wonderful.

If you need to save the game to stop playing for a while, you can save by going into or out of a building or by switching between Batman and Catwoman; otherwise, yes, you’re at the mercy of autosaves. I’ve only played one game where not being able to save anywhere was a good thing; this game wasn’t it.

You can switch between Batman and Catwomen when not caused due to the storyline? How?

Every time I try to leave a building in the middle of a level I get a “Can’t leave now, ----- will die…”

Once you beat the game.

Finally got the Riddler! I am done and out. So fantastic.

I finally picked this up when it was on sale last week on Steam. I’m enjoying it so far playing on easy.

I’m so jealous. I got the Riddler in Asylum, but the sheer number and some of the harder puzzles just kept me from even entertaining the notion of getting the Riddler in City.

I just loved this game so much. What an incredible sequel. Rocksteady said they were aiming to make the World’s Smallest Open World Game, and I think that worked out really, really well. I mean, what a hell of a way to do a great follow-up. I’m not disagreeing with the detractors that it was a less guided experience than Asylum; that’s the nature of going for an open world game, even if it’s the smallest open world game.

What I’m still amazed at though is how much they took to heart Asylum’s greatest weakness: the boss battles. To turn that on its head and to make the boss battles all unique and arguably one of the strongest parts of the game instead of the weakest, I think that’s just genius.

Incidentally, I have recently heard someone else aiming to make the world’s smallest open world game: Jonathan Blow mentioned that in the PS4 reveal for his game, The Witness. It’s a different genre, I know, but maybe trying to aim for the world’s smallest open world game can lead to some really densely packed gameplay goodness and freedom in one package once again.

Oh I know the feeling, I literally gave up too, then with all the new Arkham Origins news I got the itch and said I AM DOING THIS!

Look at the almost 18 month gap between hostage 3 and 4, lol. It also feels good to have achieved something that only 8% of all Steam copies have achieved. :)
