Battle Brothers Hits Early Access

It seems like a routine escort mission. It pays really well and we could not say no to money.

Everything was going well until we hit the forest. The duke’s men showed up and demanded we step aside. Honor was at stake, Cicobuff’s men take a job, and finish it.

We killed the duke’s men. Not that we wanted to, but it’s either that or dead people who we sworn to protect.

It made the duke mad, really mad. And teams of his men descended on us. The forest path was long and his next batch of men were armed to the teeth. 3 of my good men bought the farm and we had to run… failed the mission, the caravan bought it. And all the towns under the duke hates me. His men hunts me.

It’s exciting to be a mercenary.

Haha, great story. Some contract that turned out to be. That’s what you get when you’re a merc with honor I guess. You should probably abandon the duke’s lands for a while until his ire abates somewhat. Fortunately for you, town relations trend toward neutral so if you hang out somewhere else you should be good again with the duke, eventually.

I restarted my veteran campaign with the release of the latest patch and picked the “war” endgame. It’s been interesting because early on I’ve been getting a steady stream of bandit raiders. That’s good because they have good equipment. It’s also bad because they have good equipment. I’m also really beginning to hate bandit marksmen and their damn crossbows. In any case I still like it better than all the undead in my other campaign.

I’m also never going to hire any more miners. They all have black lung. I hired one and his stamina is so bad I finally just gave him a dagger with no shield and light armor and use him when I want to kill a guy and get his armor without damaging it. I’m sure he’ll die soon and I’m okay with that.

I also avoid the “bad” professions that give drastic penalties. It just seem quite a waste to pump so many points to a horrible stat to salvage a bad roll, especially we only get to pick 3 stats to increase per level up.

I still have not gotten the hiring figured out. The development of characters is quite hit and miss. Maybe it’s just the max-min obsession in me that wants to create the “best” recruit.

For those of us that would like to see more events in this game, it looks like we will be getting our wish. I found this in a Steam forum thread about event frequency:

I think there are 17-ish “read only” events – those were put in when the system was first getting started as they were the easiest to write and implement (these are the “traveler asks to camp with you” events). Events that require player input and carry rewards/pitfalls are obviously better, but at the time I just wanted something “on the page” if that makes any sense.

Many events were designed to proc based on who is in the party (and other triggers), but I’m currently writing/designing a whole bunch that will pop regardless and then can be answered in specific ways if you have certain people in the party. For example, using a Thief to steal a merchant’s map, or a Historian to decipher it. 25 of these sort are finished with 16 already in from the latest updates. There will be more to come.

YES!!! Such lovely news :)

So… 2 skull mission to clear an area around a town. Turns out it’s 17 Nechawhatevers. Yeah… thing about 17 of them is they just eat themselves and become like 4 of the big ones. Then they eat everyone else (which heals them). And then everyone is dead.

Sucks when you never get good equipment drops. All I had was a pair of arming swords and a single long axe so we couldn’t really drop em that well. I was just recovering from another job where I had to fight like 40+ bandits.

My one real complaint is that the enemy can bring 20 dudes to a fight and you’re only allowed to bring 12. Doesn’t really make sense. It’s an arbitrary rule, which is fine. Except it only applies to your group and literally no one else in the world. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen other merc companies running around with 14 guys.

Everytime I kill those Nachzazers (or whateveryoucallit) I move a brother onto the corpse.

There were too many to do that, but it’s a good idea I hadn’t really considered. We couldn’t really move because of the press of the damned things.

So I finished the opening mission (kill weasel something or other dude), got paid, hired some more guys, got some food and armor and now I have no idea what to do. I’ve visited a couple of other towns but I’m not offered any missions or anything. I’m lost.

Keep moving to the next town until you find a contract.

I’ve found better luck with smaller towns until your reputation increases, but that could just be chance.

Quick question. Should I fail the mission for a chance to get the Rhomphaia? It’s quite early in the Vet Ironman Campaign. It’s day 10 and I have only about 1K (with some trade goods in inventory) with 12 brothers on the roster.

Been hearing about named weapons but have not gotten a chance to use them yet.

Aside: I feel that the level progression in Vet is much faster compared to Beginner. I think it’s the larger groups of more aggressive encounters we face. Although the money is scarcer, it feels more “balanced”.

Why would you need to fail a contract to get it? What are you tasked with? Did you find out about the Rhomphaia blade from a tavern rumor telling you generally where it is? If so, you can finish whatever contract you’re on and then go looking for the site that has it.

When I reached there for a mission, a choice popped up asking me if I want to take the weapon instead.

I chose the cautious path and completed the mission instead. But the site disappeared. I guess I’ve to check the taverns now.

Ah, okay, I had a similar event happen except it was a khopesh that was offered. I’m all about the weapons so I took it. Of course, I then had to fight a bunch of undead for it. When I got back to town they weren’t happy that I didn’t bring back the idol they sent me for. I think you made the right choice, the rhomphaia is just a type of sword not a named unique so you’ll get one eventually.I’ve never run into a rhomphaia in any of my games so far I’d be curious to get my hands on one.

I’ve found two named weapons in shops, one a flanged mace and the other a polearm/billhook. Both were about 12K and that’s about all I have in the coffers at the moment. Maybe I should just pull the trigger… but there’s so many other things I still need! Decisions…

Those of you playing Ironman. Wow you are brave LOL. If I have a good thing going and get tanked due to a chance roll or dumb mistake I feel like I’d go all Hulk and throw my keyboard out the window. How do you do it? :)

Treat it like a roguelike mostly.

Alt-F4 mid-battle also brings you back to pre-battle if something especially bullshit happens.

I don’t play rogue-likes with permadeath either haha. I"m impressed with people who have the patience for stuff like that.

The tension knowing you can make a stupid move that wipe your team is irreplaceable. And please dont ALT-F4… that basically defeats the whole purpose of Ironman.

The game will be finally released out of EA today at 1:00pm EST. It’ll be interesting to see if anything goes into the 1.0 release patch beyond bug fixes and balance changes.
