Battle Brothers Hits Early Access

Awesome. I wish I’d known that before reloading my games a bazillion times LOL

I knew that it would be a long haul when the guy promised me 1000 gold upon completion to guard his caravan. I just hope I don’t run out of money to pay my troops before I arrive at the other side of the continent.

Do you have a big group? If they’re not too high level you might be OK… unless you’re traversing mountains. I just saw mountains use up 2x as much food and hills 1.5x as much.

Luckily the caravan takes care of the supplies. My rookie company is only 8 mercenaries strong, though. And not very well equipped.

We’ll see, maybe it will be as peaceful as the caravan ride over there. I had already cleared out brigands in parts of the area.

When escorting caravans you can pause the game when the caravan is very close to a settlement then left click on the settlement and you can enter it and sell off some gear (if you have any) if you are running out of gold. I mentioned that upthread but in case you missed it @Jorn_Weines.

You can also run a deficit for a day without losing mercs but I don’t recommend more than a day.

That’s neat, thanks @orald!

An isometric graphical tactical roguelike-like maybe. Though with so many descriptors, why bother?

LOL

Hmmmm in my current game I’m now finding it difficult to make enough money to hire out some decent people. I can’t seem to find any decent trade routes in my map. The one good city I have that pays well for stuff is way up in the NE corner of the map and hard to get to except by boat, and that costs $800 gold.

Is there something about bringing raw iron or copper to town or citadel with a smelter, armory, or weapon shop? When looking at map seeds people mentioned many times wanting to have those and I never understood why.

You aren’t going to be able to finance your company via trades. That’s for a little extra cash on the side at best. Contracts and selling the loot you get from battles is where the money is. The 2 and 3 star contracts pay much better than the 1 stars and the noble contracts pay extremely well (but can be tough). You need to get your reputation score up to get the good contracts so work on getting those company goals done.

Oh hehe, I forgot to mention where I’m at. A bunch of level 5 and level 6 guys. Day 60. And I’m not sure, but I might be in Orc invasion as a bunch of towns have Orc raid icons. If I could just get on top of the money situation the fact my best city is way far away the map would then be OK with that long boat ride.

I can get plenty of level 2 and 3 noble quests, but I can’t complete any of the level 3 ones.

Boohoo, seems like my caravan doesn’t move close enough.

It takes quick reflexes. Pause (space bar) when your mercs are on top of the town then left click. I had to practice with this.

This game is punishing, my low level crew just got wrecked by brigand raiders.

My Steam just updated the game but I can’t find any patchnotes or anything. Does anyone know what’s in the update?

edit: Disregard, apparently it’s the following:

  • Changed a few things to further speed up AI turns with the ‘Faster AI Movement’ option turned on.
  • Fixed Lindwurm DLC not working properly with Steam Family Sharing.
  • Fixed characters not being content with being in reserve while they’re sick.
  • Fixed rare issue with contracts from permanently destroyed settlements.
  • Fixed various minor text issues.

Day 80 and I still haven’t gotten a drop I desperately want… the 2-handed Greatsword. Too expensive to buy. Any ideas on how to get one?

There are three ways to acquire a 2 Handed Greatsword: purchase (super expensive), random event (as you travel along the road you see a grave marked by a lone sword - if you steal the sword, it’s a 2 Handed Greatsword), or by looting off a dead enemy who carries that weapon. The enemy who most reliably carries that weapon is the noble-army “Zweihander” troop which you will find fairly deep in the “War of the Noble Houses” end-game scenario, usually with high quality noble troops (not militia, typically). They are often accompanied by Billmen, Arbalesters, and Knights.

The slightly smaller and cheaper “warbrand” bastard sword is another 2 handed option. It doesn’t have the ridiculous potency of the great sword but its basic swing only costs 4 points and still hits for 2 handed damage. Warbrands can sometimes be carried by Brigand Raiders or Brigand Leaders.

Got one via hiring a decked out Hedge Knight. I hope I don’t regret hiring him cause he’s expensive (but excellent).

I have a melee character that has the athletic trait and thought he’d be good for trying to run around one side of the battlefield to try and get next to enemy archers or those blue ghosty whisp things. I took Pathfinder, Colosssus, Bags, and Quick Hands so far. He’s also got Direwolf Hide Armor on and a nice helmet. Keep switching his weapons around. I’ve not spent his next two perk points as I’m undecided. How should I finish out his build to make his mission most effective?

You will definitely want Footwork once it’s available.

Here’s a tip for that role: if you only own one wardog, the dog should be equipped on that dude. Siccing a wardog on archers/wraith-things can be extremely useful. Try to acquire one of the wardogs with armor. Wardogs will die when used to tie down archers, but they also help a ton.

I’d probably go for a reach weapon like polearm.

I just got one from a named bandit leader during a contract to take out their camp. So, that’s another way if you’re lucky. The bandit leaders carry high level weapons but what you get is totally random. They have nice armor too. I got a very nice kettle helm along with the greatsword. It did cost me a dead bro though. And on the way back with his head another mercenary company demanded his head from me. Of course I chose to fight instead of breaking the contract and lost another bro. I did get a lot of good equipment from all that but the cost in men was very high for that contract. I’ve lost 5 bros so far and it’s been hard keeping my core group leveling evenly. All over the place with levels now.

I also got a greatsword once from an undead hero so I think anything that’s named may carry one.

I also have just run into a Lindwurm. Nasty things.

Cool thanks for the advice. I wasn’t sure if I should grab “brawny” so he could move farther each turn? Or does brawny not work that way?

Does initiative do anything besides effect turn order and the couple perks that depend on it? I always pass my turn a lot for the AI to move in close and wasn’t sure if there was anything else it did. What an amazing game this is! :)
