Battle Brothers Hits Early Access

Beat the Weasel and finished a one skull contract. Then in my usual overconfidence I took a two skull ‘escort a caravan’ contract. I had eight guys, what could possibly go wrong? The fact that the contract included payment per head should have tipped me off.

Got waylaid by young orcs and an orc berserker.

Party wipe.

Didn’t even make it to any new shiny DLC stuff.

Ouch.

But, did you have fun trying? Because usually I do. I would rather wipe early and have fun than get really far before I wipe, so you have that going for you at least!

The one campaign I really gave it my all and my full focus I beat it and I loved the feel of the mid- and end-game, so I play on beginner now all the time because I like to treat it more like a party-based RPG than a roguelike, though it’s still quite horrifying when a favorite character dies and I don’t save scum or reload unless I know I can avoid a game over/party wipe. We’ll see how this play through goes.

Yeah. I knew I was toast when I saw da’ Orks. I’ll be back for more tonight.

I also like the try out feature. Finding guys with no traits is better than recruiting guys who are craven or otherwise deficient. Overall I like what I’m seeing so far.

Ohhh, I did tryouts and what did I find? 2 guys with the athletic traits in the 2 starting towns. Very keen on this guy:

That guy has real potential. I think his resolve needs some love probably every level, but otherwise he’s looking like a strong character. My guess is he’ll be the first to die.

hahahaha! Gonna put the best armor on him. He was cheap too!

Feels good to be back in the game. I went with easy on everything. Want to savor this playthru.

If you chose “I need some time to think about this” when deciding on a contract. How much time do you get? And does it go away if you choose another contract? Also, you don’t lose rep if you turn down a contract do you?

I think that’s just an in-game way to review your options, there is no penalty for backing out before you accept and look at other options, though once you accept a contract that’s a different tale altogether. As for how long those contracts are offered, I am not sure. It isn’t forever, in most cases at least, and it may depend on the actual contract. I imagine, for example, caravan guarding eventually drops off and the caravan takes off without you.

Really having fun with this. Coming across a lot of new stuff. In fact, I’m feeling like this is a much better value that the Battletech add-on.

Some of the cool new things I’ve come across in just a little bit of time:

  • Rebuilding efforts
  • Witch burnings
  • Throwable single Spear which can disable a shield
  • Of course all the paints we knew about

Sometime’s it’s ok to turn coward and run to the edge of the map and escape.

They added a Try Out button during recruiting phase. The first time I used it revealed the iron lungs trait of the potental recruit!

Nice QoL improvement I’ll say!

One of the improvements is a change in the retreat mechanics. And the “end round” button also speeds things up.

You’re right, but I hate to retreat.

After I made the mental adjustment, I found myself progressing a LOT better =).
Another tip that I always do now. I that I get knifes and daggers or flaills for everyone to do the very first mission. The loot gained helps a ton in the progression.

It does sound like a nice feature. As a parallel feature it would be cool if they added a scout ability for the party members to be able to reveal enemy stats and then a journal to keep track of the ones already discovered. Then it could start as a blank slate and fill in as the player discovers stuff. It could be maintained across games, as the journal is passed down from one merc leader to the next.

But, I’ll try and stop beating that dead horse :-)

This is on sale. I know almost nothing about it. It sounds like it could be my thing. Should I buy it? Money is not an issue, but time is. I have way too many unplayed games.

This game is better than most of them. However, most of them aren’t this type of game. I have a 100 hours in this game, and my latest (29/81) achievement is “A Bitter End - you retire and your Company goes down fighting.” And that pretty much sums up my experience with the game. I always play on medium, and the game is really challenging on that level. I can do pretty well, but you eventually wind up overextending and this game is so good at chopping off your hand whenever you do that.

Are there crates you can break to find random loot that you can then trade with other players in the Battle Brothers store?

Only if you buy the golden tickets.

I usually tell the approximate stats of an enemy by it’s equipment. If a bandit king has a great sword and full chain hauberk or something, he’s probably super, super dangerous. I kind of like the obscuring of the stats, like being able to tell if an enemy is bruised or wounded, or gravely wounded, or the state of their armor makes sense because your men can see those states (and that information is readily available with a simple mouse hover). But it would be strange if my men knew the bandit king they faced had 29 melee defense and a melee skill of 71, I think.

From a logical and immersive standpoint I know you’re right - I just found it a bit frustrating. But that is probably due to my impatience of not learning by failing. Also I think I started off on normal difficulty instead of easy. I think if I play again I will do easy…maybe…probably :-) I have a hard time turning things down from the ‘normal’ setting, maybe often to my determent :-)

I know, what’s with us, for no logical reason I see the word easy and there is no way in hell I want to play that. Its not like I good either
