Battlefield 2042 - DICE Goes Back to the Future, Just Not the 2142 Future

I find it funny that I don’t see a lot of bitching around the 'net from Battlefield fans about a lack of “realism” this time around, when this trailer literally recreates an old meme.

This last map is set in Antarctica, where soldiers fight over oil and gas, just like in real life. Massive silos are spread out across it, begging to be blown up. It’s the largest map in Battlefield 2042, measuring 5.9km squaredstrong text

5.9km squared? That’s not that big.

Apparently they got more info during the presentation that they still can’t talk about yet. So they know more of what is coming. Listening the the Battlefield Friends folks talking about it on the Neebs Gaming youtube channel.

Yeah, I could notice now there is a generation of players that has played BF1/Bf5 which are somewhat more slow and have more emphasis of some realistic details, and have not played the previous games which are… Battlefield games.

Nobody has that expectation. But my expectation IS to be entertained from day 1. And not have to grind x weeks until the game is fun.
You buy a game, not homework.

And yeah, like you said it isn’t 1993 anymore: at this point skill based matchmaking is a standard, so the game shouldn’t match you with players that are way above your skill level.

Watching the reveal again, with that bit from the Singapore map (ship containers) is that a nuke going off at the end?

It was just the right level of absurd. Now, if it was a woman shooting down that plane, that would just be taking things way too far. That’s ridiculous.

Battle Passes are just poisoning modern shooters and multiplayer games. I know DICE have been struggling to find ways to monetize BF without selling maps, but the major focus on Battle Passes is just torpedoing my interest (only AI bots is saving some of it).

I know most players will just eat it up because they love having unlocks on top of unlocks to grind for. I even have little interest in the free Battle Pass track since it still requires a slavish devotion to one game in fixed periods of time.

The trailer was initially exciting, but then I realized it was basically a meme compilation with no gameplay.

I’ll await gameplay videos and more info about the AI bots.

For me personally, I enjoy battle passes but there’s a huge caveat to that: I enjoy them when it’s the primary game I’m playing. Battle passes can really really suck when it’s a game I’m playing a little more sporadically, and that’s the kind of thing that a lot of shooters are for me.

I think I distinctly saw a woman during the skyscraper scene of the trailer, but mainly because of the facial features.

But, yeah, after the BF5 experience, I figured DICE was going to be shying away from anything that might incite the mouthbreathers.

Is there a better way for them to generate money for continued content without fracturing the player base like would happen before with expansions?

I realize Battle Passes are the current hotness with monetization that most players find palatable or acceptable. In a few years there will be a new monetization hotness that everyone pivots to… This is certainly a ME problem.

It comes down to a simple formula for me. I know for sure that I will only ever unlock or see a tiny fraction of the content locked behind a time-limited Battle Pass so I might as well skip the whole game. I don’t care about cosmetics but increasingly devs are locking operators, mechanics, and guns in Passes (which seems somewhat the case here) so I will just never get to play with those toys.

Normal unlocks in games, while a tad annoying, at least were never time limited, so I could eventually get there over a long enough timeline. Now FOMO is the carrot games dangle in front of us.

There was a time in my life where this would make more sense. I was obsessed with Bad Company 2 and played that incessantly. Now one game rarely earns that devotion.

One of the announced specialists is a woman.

MARIA FALCK

Place of birth: Germany
Class: Support
Gadget: S21 Syrette Pistol
Trait: Combat Surgeon

The S21 Syrette Pistol allows Maria to heal and revive players from afar. The Combat Surgeon trait ensures that Maria always revives players to full health rather than just a sliver.

You and me, buddy. I hate the idea of paying for a battle pass and then only unlocking half of it because I don’t just play this game for 40hrs a week.

But… I’ll take a battle pass over loot boxes. I’m still not a fan of battle passes and I rarely ever buy one, but at least the battle pass lays out its scheme to you. Do this stuff by this date and you get this, that, and the other thing. Loot boxes are just straight up gambling.

Have to agree with everything you just said, Telefrog. Imagine this is me pushing a “Like” button on your post.

Yeah Battle Basses are the lesser of two evils compared to loot boxes.

I still prefer map packs or expansions despite how they can split the player base. Those were one of the last shooter DLCs that actually felt worthwhile to purchase to me, like you were getting something substantial instead of gambling or a time limited treadmill. I know that time has mostly passed however.

BF7…?

As long is cosmetic stuff I don’t have problems with the Battle Passes!

Because for me it will be as if they don’t exist.

The real horror are the couple of games I’ve seen that combine them. It’s a battle pass, but most of the track rewards are loot boxes!
