There are two versions of most of the maps on PC (Close Quarters maps being the exception): Conquest and Large Conquest. The larger maps have more capture points.

Personally, I find anything more than 40-50 players to be overkill even on the large maps. Close Quarters in particular has to be played with no more than 16 or so players to be fun for me.

I really have no idea why the 64 player, 2000 tickets, instant spawn crap is so popular on the PC. It’s fucking retarded.

I expect Premium monetization to be more invasive this time out. For EA, one of the perks of pushing out regular iterations of their big franchises is being able to up the monetization with each new version. While I don’t think we’ll be paying to “reload after 6 hours” just yet, I do fear that the micropayments will be more invasive than the innocuous currency buying that has actually improved some of EA’s recent great games. I’m still looking forward to finding out more for now because Battlefield 3 beat 2142 to become my new favorite Battlefield game. Man, I really need to make some time to play it more before it dies in 9 months.

BTW, you’re so wrong about the setting. BF4 not being 2143 is a huge missed opportunity, especially since the success of Black Ops 2 suggests that the market is in the mood for future toys in their multiplayer FPSs.

Isn’t it time that BF4 gets it’s own thread?

Anyways - I tried out some of the maps last night. At first I used the somewhat clumsy browser (On the ps3), but then I discovered the Quick Match, and … Close Quarters Conquest or somesuch in a middle-eastern palace - holy hell that was fun! I’'ve sworn that big outdoors maps are the bomb, but this? This was very ,very fun!! Is that part of the close quarters DLC? I’m very impressed by how fun that was.

One bad thing was that I was kicked by admin all of a sudden, loosing everything - I assume this is done when I’m on some clans server? Aren’t there official servers where people aren’t kicked?

Played some CTF, had the flag for like 15 seconds then got ran over by a van.

Pretty sure I’ll stick with RUSH and CONQUEST. :p

Also if BF4 is on track to be just more BF3, I will probably hold off on getting it. I will continue to say that a 2 year release window is too short.

Yes, that was part of the Close Quarters (CQ) DLC.

And yes, since we now have private servers on the consoles we also have abusive admins. When you log on to these you might find some specific rules listed (no C4 on flag/cap, no USAS etc.) but it’s all down to thow the admins are.
This does not happen on the official servers. You cannot filter on just official, but they are easy enough to find in the browser.

I really like CTF mode. Sure it’s mine spam, javelin spam and bikesbikesbikes (seems like this mode was made for engineers). But it’s fast paced and I cannot get enough of seeing bikes running over mines, exploding in a ball of flame :)
I’ve heard of issues with too many camping their own flag but haven’t seen that myself. Not sure if this is an issue on console where you’re only max 12 on a team. And since the bikes are very fast, you have to be quick on the defence when a match starts.

CTF mode could be good with a decent team, but in public matches it just servers to exacerbate the problem of campers/passive players.

I’ve been having fun with CTF. I’ve been playing 64 player PC and for the most part, the servers I have been playing haven’t had too much of a problem with campers. There’s always a few people that defend, but I think that’s a valid strategy.

I have to confess, after 212 hours of playing the game, is beginning to tire me. The last DLC is barely holding my attention.

212? You rookie. I’m at 336 and no sign of the game getting boring. Try different game modes. Play Infantry only for a week or two and then jump into vehicle maps for a while. That way the game mods stay challenging. Also try joining a clan and playing a coordinated match. It is a totally different experience.

I haven’t seen that. Usually I see the whole team rush off after the flag, and I’m left to defend.

My so-called team has lost all but one CTF match. This mode sucks for public servers.

Yeah CTF is kind of a mixed bag.

I like that everyone is focused on the objective, sort of like rush, but I don’t like that there is only ONE objective.

The nice thing about Rush is that you have to defend two objectives at the same time, so it can lead to some interesting strategies versus everybody piling on the one obvious choke point.

I also spend a lot of time watching both flags sit at the opposite bases waiting for someone to cap their own flag back…

I had the most amusing game yesterday, where I entered a Grand Bazaar server just to unlock an accessory from the M416, but the server changed to my most hated map, Metro. Still, I said “well, we are only a dozen guys, it will be bearable”. In the end I won the game with 10500 points with the second highest being 4500. Once the level isn’t full of people spamming everything on Earth, I happen to be good at it. :)

But that was the exception, not the norm, I’m noticing I’m not as good at the game as I was before, or the rest of people caught up with me or surpassed me (so many level 100 guys beating me up :( ).

…and uninstalled.

222 hours. I think that’s my 3rd most played game, ever.
Level 78 (Eagle-33).
702 SPM average. (On the top 6%)
1.71 W/L (On the top 6%)
1.08 K/D
202 MVP awards (on the top 8%)

and my best stat: on the top 1% in Objectives per minute

I’m happy, in the last day I happened to get 3 unlocks that I couldn’t get in the last months, the jackhammer and two vehicle unlocks.

One of the best MP of the generation.

I’m at about half that time played (and certainly nowhere near those stats) and my finger has hovered over the uninstall button a couple times so far. It doesn’t help that the game has ballooned to a whopping 30GB.

Definitely had loads of fun with BF3, but in some ways the abundance of expansions maybe made me burn out faster than I would have normally. I’m all for new maps, and the quality of the expansions was overall quite good, but the proliferation of new weapons, game modes, unlocks, vehicles, etc. made it daunting to come back to the game after extended hiatuses. Add in the fact that finding a server with reasonable settings (normal ticket count, appropriate max players for the map, good map and/or mode rotation, etc.) and coming back to the game after missing 2-3 expansions just felt overwhelming and too much like learning a new game.

That’s sad. But understandable I guess. I must admit I’m a bit jealous of your score. I tried to get a higher Assault SPM for a while but I just couldn’t figure out how you got it so high. I’m guessing it was a combination of specific servers(TDM) and certain maps(Close Quarter). I’m not far off though: 508 vs your 551.

I’m surprised at the few unlocks you have for airpower. You’re missing out on a very fun part of the game by not playing with choppers and jets tough I guess it’s a bit hard to get into now that everyone is semi-pro these days.

I played a bit of choppers, it’s the poor jets what I didn’t touched.

Well, I have Tomb Raider and Bioshock to try now…

Unlocks for jets has a fast track now: Air Superiority.
I got all unlocks for jets in a matter of hours. Just fly back and forth between the capture points. After I got beam scanning I started to get points from kills as well :)

Teaser trailer of BF4 today. It’s like they know I just quit 3, they want to hook me again with 4! :D
